How much do you actually need to know to be good at SC?

You said SC was a mashers game which got him upset. He is just saying if all you do to win is mash away at buttons why don't you come to some events and mash away and win free monies!

The best I can come up with is that all you need to do is know how to mash... it's a very mash friendly game and it annoys the hell out of me. It just seems like the better masher wins...
Obviously looking for something...

That something looks like an argument
not once in that post did you say something along the lines "I need help"

@OP when spacing someone out keep in mind a few general rules there are exceptions but they are rare
1. Most ranged step killers are high
2. Quick step cant be canceled
This game doesnt have tradtional mix ups in the sense of mid/low they are more vert with good frames/step killer

This was your first post.

You play another game. Let's say I came to MKU or wherever you come from and say something like "UMK3 is all mash spear and uppercut and win." or "All you have to do is runstop pressure, its boring and stupid and no skill.".

What would you say to me? Some might try and educate me, but most would ignore or insult me because of the obvious bias in my statement, lest ignorance breed.

Wow, and that helps me how? Wait, I know... the SC community is large enough that it can be this elitist right?

I should know... I help run the MK community and we aren't large enough to be that elitist. If you can't tell, this thread is about people looking for help.

This was the next post. You are defensive because someone insulted you for making a biased statement. You then proceed to play the elitism card (badly) then play victim. Sorry pal, you don't get to do that.

It's cyclical, and never ending. The only way to win is to not go in with that chip on your shoulder to begin with; or accept that you approached this wrongly.

No, not at all what I meant. Frustration with this game has taken over and losing to mashers DOES annoy the piss outta me.

I never once said that I was good at this game... quite the contrary...I said that the only time I've won was when I did mash... and it happened against people who are quite obviously worse than I am.

So let me say now... I'm looking for help. I know most of you won't want to help me at this point, but let it be known that I'm not here to start crap with the SC community... that's not who I am or what I'm about. Believe it or not, I promote SC at my own events every thursday.

@Warui_NE I didn't appreciate the way you out and out attacked me, which is why I responded the way I did. I'd like to start off on a better note if you're cool with that.

yeah cool feel free to pm me and ask me any questions you have im sure idlemind and page will offer the same thing

I dont really attack as much as I am brutally honest and have no tact

Even though the OP is partially at fault, I think it's better for everyone if people didn't resort to insulting the OP with the first response. Like you said, the whole situation just escalates as people insult the OP and the OP must then respond in kind.

I think the first response should really try to address the OP's issue in a reasonable manner. If the were to continue to respond with extreme bias while ignoring the sound advice, then proceed to do whatever one feels is reasonable.

Anyways, to the OP:

Because there's so many different moves in SC, it's very hard for beginners to run a 'proper' defense against them. This means you'll generally end up trying to block, only to get thrown or guard breaked. If you attack you'll often get interrupted because you don't know the properties of the moves you're blocking or the moves your responding with.

This is a phase that pretty much all new players will have to go through. A good place to start is to look for the top 10 moves list for the character you're playing and stick with the moves listed in that list. Try to understand the strengths of each move and stick with that limited moveset for a while. A lot of beginners trying to move past the mashing phase get stuck because they go into training mode and try out all the cool looking moves, but then fail to apply them in battle. A lot of moves are either not good or very situational, which means when you throw them out without knowing how to apply them, a masher will generally just interrupt you. When you have a more limited moveset to work with, you can focus on figuring out when to apply those moves, as opposed to what moves to use. Having less to think about during battle will allow you to focus on watching your opponent and learning how to block/punish him, as opposed to wrangling with your own character trying to get out the move you want.

Pay special attention to the punisher (if there is one) for your character and learn to work that into your game. This is generally your universal response after blocking an opponent's attack string. This would be your move to interrupt mashers that you can always fall back on. Pro players know exactly which moves they can punish with the punisher, but for now it's good enough for you to know to throw it out. Against mashers you'll generally get a free hit with it.

what is it called when you press down on the button really really hard in the hopes something wonderful and magic might happen? Cause that's what I do.

I think I can shed some light on this situation. I picked Maxi as my character to learn because he has a bunch of Highs to Mid/Low and a few mid/low, low/mid strings and coming from a MK9 background I was all about that. What I didnt realize is you can be hit out of a lot of these strings at certain points, so I tried to begin poking or using single strikes to make the opponent guess wrong but what ended up happening is it literally seemed like everyone is mashing buttons constantly. No matter what combination of single strikes or mid/lows, they would hit me out of something any time I would try to "mix it up". Im trying to find new ways to go about mixing up my attacks and I found a few things but its still a far cry from some Johnny Cage frame traps, lol.

That's why I found a character that's better at spacing is good for beginners, a masher can't hit you if he is out of range.

BTW we should practice together, sent you a msg.

Want to know how to beat a masher?
Block incoming attack, then 2A.

+8 on hit going into FCA (typically i12/13), just spam it till he/she dies. =/

If they block 2A, rinse and repeat - that move is kryptonite to scrubs.

If you're losing to mashers then you're not using your movement options and fastest moves properly. This game has a lot of moves that tech crouch or have built in sidesteps as well, knowing these and how to deal with them is important.
