Fu-ma's Shadow
The longtime veterans are loved in part because they're just that -- veterans, characters who built the series and ones we've grown up with. Newcomers can receive all kinds of responses for being new, ranging from good to bad, and are always stacked against the veterans in terms of how good (or bad) they are. That said, let's take off the goggles for a second and imagine if the characters that have been staples of the series for so long were introduced now, how the audiences would react to them.

I'll start:
- Nightmare -- He'd probably get a lot more jokes about being an edgelord (like Reaper in Overwatch), though he'd still be seen as badass.
- Taki -- Pretty well-received for being an adult kunoichi who's also sexy.
- Talim -- Would cause a massive amount of controversy in today's PC infecting era.
- Ivy -- A similar boat. You'd see websites like Kotaku shaming PS for introducing a dominatrix-themed character in 2018.
- Maxi -- "Why does the Bruce Lee clone have Elvis hair?"
- Voldo -- A lot of people would get weirded out pretty fast.
- Mitsurugi -- Probably nothing major, they'd just see him as a standard samurai.
