Yeah, I need to do that too. It also helps that I play Taki, who is one of the faster characters, if not the fastest. I believe she has the fastest A. So being proactive shouldn't be a problem.

An even better thing to note if you can see/predict the incoming high is just going into a TC move. Dodge and punish in one shot :D It is possible to get this stuff going, it just takes a while to recognize stuff. Unfortunately for me it's hard to break old habits (both on offense and defense, like never remembering Raph's mashy B JF) so I end up losing a lot before the game picks up.
