MilkBot Signing On

there's also knowing how to space properly, cover multiple options, stage positional awareness, and execution

spacing, option coverage, and positional awareness all have counters, and those counters have counters. Execution is not a factor for the majority of the cast, unless you're a complete video game scrub. :)

it all boils down to rock/paper/scissors.

all you're doing is adding more layers to the rock/paper/scissors.

true but those are skills that seem entirely separate from being good at guessing in rock paper scissors.

and execution is always a big deal

I disagree. For example when you backdash after certain moves, when you forward dash a little then sidestep, when you position yourself in a certain way to make a particular option more threatening (ringout, wallsplat, etc) you're still putting me in a guessing game. For example, I can do a backstep killer, AA/Throw you when I see you run in, step kill out of disadvantage to prevent positioning, etc etc etc. You're gonna have to actually explain to me why those skills are separate from being good at RPS.

Just because the mindgames aren't as cut and dry as Throw/Mid/Low doesn't mean its not Rock/Paper/Scissors at the core of it.

Let's talk in PMs, this thread is about Milkbot.

I have no idea what high level RPS is. If it can be played like SC where you can get the opponent to reveal habits by overwhelming them somehow, then I'd agree with you. But I know nothing about competitive RPS. It seems completely random to me. It's not like you ever have a literal advantage since both players make a move at the same time too. So I don't get it.

Milkbot: Hi. Compete offline. Now!

I read this before I signed up for events at DEV, and promptly decided not to bother entering the RPS tournament there. RPS is the ultimate game of yomi (okay not really). It's less like complete random, and more like two people subjecting each other to a 33/33/33 mix-up at the same time. RPS was actually IN Soul Blade if you ever got certain moves - usually your basic A or B - to clash. You were then subjected to a mix-up in which A beat B, B beat K, and K beat A.

Welcome, MilkBot. Happy days with Soul Calibur to you.

Adjusting spacing and doing other things to improve your risk/reward has nothing to do with guessing in RPS. Knowing how to do that is not obvious. If the game really was nothing but RPS then any choice at any given time would be viable. Choosing wisely is a very important skill that defines playstyles and general skill level.

I only post this here because you're making it sound like this game is simply a guessing game. The mind game is more complex than that and there's more to the game than the mind game.

GL against Krayzie and NDK, Milkbot

Welcome-
Hope to see you offline. If you make the effort to compete with NDK and Krayzie, you'll end up seeing/hating me too.

Ha! Hey everyone. Did I mention that I was glad to be here?

You guys make it sound so complicated. The way I view fighting games as being synonymous with rock, paper, scissors is that there's always 'something that beats something'. i.e. 8way beats vertical, horizontal beats 8way, monument beats horizontal ;) etc. Even more simply, block beats attack, attack beats grab and grab beats block (essentially). And besides - it's very natural to find yourself trying to implement a strategy in a simple game like rock, paper, scissors. Trying to anticipate when your opponent will attempt to use rock two times in a row for example or knowing that they will try and counter your strategy so you in turn counter their counter. Heh.

You may disagree but that's how I break fighting games down and it makes sense in my head. Sure you can get technical but at it's very core - that's what it is; a very sexy game of rock, paper, scissors. If anything, I would dare to say that the best guesser wins.

You guys are starting to freak me out. Now I'm getting intimidated meeting up with these guys. Hopefully I'll pose as some kind of challenge. It's no fun when your opponents aren't tough enough. And I believe the only two in my thread that I've played are Enkindu and Nofacekill3r. If you two are that good online, I'm starting to worry how well you and everyone else plays offline!

For starters, I wish I was you Milkbot. I would hang up my online career. Then, I'd be lifelong friends with top tiered players who'd want to welcome you by giving you a beating yet are willing to help you. I wouldn't care if I sucked, I'd voraciously want to get better by embracing the beatings while learning. Playing offline is the true way to be recognized in skill. Online is a dreamland that I got sick of: I only play it to either troll or to fight 8wayrunners or buddies. So by the time SCV drops, it's time to drop serious noble online play and just find people offline. Hopefully I can make a "dojo" with people I know and help them as they help me.

Basically, don't be intimidated. Just go for it. They aren't gonna take your money(unless you an egotistic money fool who money matches) like some hungry people.

Enkindu and Nofacekill3r are probably in the top 5 of players online, the other 3 I'd say are probably Woahhzz (arguably top player in the states), Loloroco, and Xephukai. So don't worry, not everyone is that good online or offline. Just come meet up with myself and NDK and get some TRUE games in. Like I said before, offline is the way to truly enjoy this game how it was meant to be played.

AznPB from XBL? You're saying you don't remember Signia949? We used to have some fierce ranked matches back in the day. I'd constantly get rung out by Kilik 2A+K, lol. Good to see you've found 8WR.

Yeah, thanks guys. I admit, I haven't been this antsy about a fighting game in a long time. I look forward to more self-improvement which I was advocating earlier. And who knows? Maybe I'll become known throughout the Soul Calibur community if I keep at it. :)

Oh, dude! I didn't realize you were THAT Signia. I wasn't paying that much attention to usernames in my thread but I always most of the time remember who I play. We haven't played in awhile. Wasn't one of your mains Lizardman?

And I got enough messages from 8WRers about Kilik's :2::A::+::K: that I removed it from my arsenal. It's funny because now I developed this high and mighty attitude and when I see other Kilik's use it, I scoff and call them noobs. Does that make me a hypocrite? Heh heh.

Ummm Low771 is the best online player. But anyways Milkbot is coming by this week so he'll see the difference soon enough :D
