Obligatory intro thread.

Retribution

[08] Mercenary
So, hi.

The suffering of maining Tira in Soulcalibur IV having faded, I was longing for a new fighting game recently, and hearing of my main's buffage I return to the franchise!

Now without the dismissal of anything more difficult than a diagonal input.
Which has improved my experience tenfold.
I main Tira, as you'd expect, (god, I adore these buffs...) but Fahros's videos also have me using Mitsurugi on the side.

There was also a prompt somewhere to give information about myself.
I think.
So, I'm variously disabled, an artist, (imaginary stuff, possibly since detailed vision ends a little past my sketchpad), awake far too late and greatly obsessed with horror media of all stripes.

Nice to finally sign up after lurking for a while!

Aww... I'm sorry to hear about your disability, but nobody will think less of you for anything! The fact is any fighting game player is welcome as long as you're a nice person! =] Tira is a fun style to main! We have a lot of Tira experts on this board, and even a Tira player won EVO 2012 (shining Decopon) keep at it!

Thank you.
I'm not sorry about it, though; it's really come to be a part of my identity like any other difficulty, in the same fashion a short temper or difficulty with maths might.

Aye, I've watched Decopon's win; I'm still trying to find the right balance of poking and combos with my own Tira. Though watching Decopon has helped me in other ways.

I didn't actually used to follow up my moves, stuff like 1A to Gloomy 66B or Gloomy 4A to 2AB, and had a tendency to withdraw instead of pressuring even when I'd floored someone.

Welcome to the site Retribution. Always nice to see a fresh face around here.
Tira is a fun character to play, though I don't see many Tira players around. Mitsu is another good character to use and once you start getting really good with him he is a lot of fun. But should you need help, The Soul Arena is where you want to go should if you have questions about characters and such (that is if already didn't know that. Hahaha.)
But I'm happy to help if you have any questions about the site or characters you might be interested in.
Hope to see you around!

I you end up doing a lot of sketches. Maybe you can share some of them on here. There is an art section where people would probably enjoy your contributions. Other than that, welcome to 8wayrun.

@Gaza Memoria: Hey, thanks for the offer of help. I've checked out the Soul Arena already; it was good reading.

Actually, I do have a question about a character I might be interested in, if asking it here doesn't count as off topic...
I was thinking of picking up Nightmare, but I've never seen someone use a decent-looking low attack with him.

They all looked pretty slow and blockable on reflex.
Does Nightmare have any quick lows, or does he rely more on throws or guard crushes to break someone's defense?

@Alex.J: I would, but I don't really have a suitable camera. The details don't really come up.

His fast quick poke low is 1k. If you plan to get good with Nightmare, you will be using it a lot. I would consider his crouching throws a quick low also. He gets good damage off them and decent setups. The A rings out forward and the B rings out backwards. Against newer players, you can get plenty of ring outs with him. Nightmare gets most his damage off strong guesses and spacing/whiff punishing. He can space better than most characters and whiff punish with moves like 33b. He can pretty much whiff punish other characters from quite a distance away. His 66b is a slow heavy mid but gives frames on block. He has setups and ways to put the opponent into guessing games. But being able to make good reads against skilled players is how you are going to win with him. His CE and other moves rely on that.

Ah! Yeah, I'm familiar with the low throws from Siegfried in SC4.
Reads aren't really my strong point yet, but that might come after I learn the game a bit more.

You're most welcome. I'm always happy to lend what knowledge I have.
But Alex has covered quite a bit on Nightmare. I haven't learned him to the fullest yet, but I do know a:G:a is a great tool as it is a quick move that has a Guard Break to it and it from what I have seen is safe on block most of the time. As far as quickness goes, he can string combos together very quickly for a character that seems sluggish. His low throws are also a great mix up tool to throw off your opponents. Hope that helps.
