As Algol is a boss character with an extremely gimmicky looking moveset.
A lot of first impressions of the character is that Algol is broken.
However, the more veterans use the character, the more we realize that Algol is really strong, potentially overpowered and definitely not ban worthy.

However, with the strong first impression that the character brings is a hard one to dispel. Thus I will have 2 threads on these SAs.
One with the so-called, current status of Banning Algol. This thread will serve as a guide to tournament organizers and as a concluded opinion for major tournaments which may or may not be organized by SC veterans. (CGS/WCG/Cannes/Evo/Nats/SBO etc.) It will be updated with the latest findings and left closed. I would be honored if its information is reflected on the Algol Wiki as well.

The other thread will be this one, where players can bring in information regarding new findings for Algol that they feel deserves to be gutted down and analyzed to see if it could break the game or maybe even make Algol look worse. At the same time, this will help newer players get a better understanding of what Algol should look like on the tier charts.

Please note, that by posting your opinion on this thread. You fully surrender the right for me to edit your post for clarity. I want this thread to be easy to skim through. Context of your post will also be changed if you decide to start some flame war or e-drama here. I will not tolerate this thread turning into a drama thread.

I will create the other thread now, please refer to it as the start of discussion.

In the interest of neat and tidy, I've closed the 2 relevant threads on this topic and placed all of the old posts in this thread. Use it as a reference if needed, but keep discussion in this thread.

It the title of Boss character that make people bandwagon for calling Algol cheap. I'm sorry, but Algol is one the worst close range fighter in the game. And he has the power, but most of his best launchers are unsafe. So, I wonder why people won't to complain about him being allow.

ALGOL IS LEGAL

the thread should be locked immediately

If you want people to stop saying for him to be banned we should stop even making topics like these that bring the matter to attention. If this keeps on too long I will probably make a similar topic in the cassandra forum and piss people off.

Like it or not, most tournament organizers won't bother to find out why Algol is Legal.
I feel its my responsibility as someone who mains the character to put out a resource for people to look to when it comes to this issue, as it will affect everyone who joins any SCIV tournament.

I also see people in other threads saying the tournament they are entering has banned Algol. I want to be able to tell them to point the organizers to one complete thread archiving all valid arguments. As well as a community "Yes" or "No" with regard to the question.

I'm hoping more players will step up and state that they feel Algol is tournament worthy.

I would like the ones attempting to ban him give valid reasons TO ban him. The fact that he's a boss character isn't a valid enough reason (considering he doesn't break the game and isn't even close to Sophie's level in terms of potential). I call shenanigans.

It label he has as a boss character. When people here boss chaarcter being playable. It's going to be cheap and brkoen throwen around like fire. And beside there is a bug with Algol. If your blocking my one of my combos wit halgol or for an example 6AAB, and trying for a 2A+B is always being bloc kor roll out of the way for some reason. It could be online.

Nightmare and Siegfried are boss characters in SC4 too -_-

this shouldn't even be up for debate

According to Neorussell, one of the regional organizers, there is a good chance that Algol will end up being banned from Regionals and Nationals.

Neorussell said:
just want to mention the the organizers are all for banning him.
So he is allowed for now but national rules will apply in the future and Algol's future looks bleak from their discussion.
Nothing is decided yet but it's not looking good for that character.

Hopefully the final decision will be decided by the community (a poll perhaps?), and not just those who are organizing the Nats.

So I take it that every person who has posted thus far wouldn't mind me putting their name up as supporting the notion to NOT ban Algol?

I don't understand it, for some reason people seem to think that just because nobody is arguing that Algol is broken anymore, automatically means that he's not banned.
The threat of him being banned is real and we have to take steps to avoid it.

All i need is a "I support the notion of Algol being Legal" or something along those lines, not very hard is it?

I don't seen anything broken about him. He's kinda different to other characters, especially for the projectile launching, but I don't think that's enough to have him banned.

Plus, he being a boss it not reason enough.

Put my name up, if that helps.

Well I support Algol being legal. There is no concrete argument for banning him. He doesn't break the game and he's by no means overpowered. I don't see why people see his gimmicks and think broken. He's not Jinpachi.

Also let's not forget that there soem character tha tdo more dmg than Algol himself!! And also, add my name on the list as not to ban Algol man. Man Soul calibur palyers are acting like scrubs right now. But I shouldn't say that, because I'm just mad and piss off cause there stupid reason to ban character that doesn't even break the game. And beside, I found a bug for most of his combos to.

Algol should be and is legal until there is a reason to ban him.

Tell this to your players: Rules are NOT made up to please someone who doesn't feel like fully studying a game. Algol is a character who simply needs to be studied by more players, who can then realize he only has parlor tricks (remember when we banned Abyss...who was discovered later to be low tier?)... Algol is an upper mid tier character imo, and nothing more. The fact that he is a boss, doesn't suggest anything more than he is new, people need to learn him, and stop whining.

Anyone who disagrees, better post some damn PROOF as to why he needs a ban. Not this paper thin conjecture like "omg his bubbles are too powerful and safe" crap.

thx.

Man, I didn't expect you cha. How things been going friend. And Algol like Ike in SSBB slow, but powerful. And Ike was label as broken to a lot players in tell. this is what Ike had that made people call him cheap and overpower. He was a low percent killer , like his f smash killing you around 30%, utilt kill you around 90, and etc. But when people figrue out how to beat Ike. He was low tier in less than a min. So, I'm thinking the same thing about Algol he's slow but powerful. So, what is the point of banning a character, that most of the soul calibur players complain about him being cheap anyway?

Algol = Overpowered. I'm indifferent about him being banned, but I just know he can be extremely unenjoyable to play against. Think SC3 Xianghua.

I think his bubble keepaway is being overlooked as too much of a scrub-killer. Most people realize that the best way to overcome a turtle Algol player is to cut through the bubbles with GI and stepping. The problem with these 2 solutions is that they FAIL. To explain, if you manage to GI one of his bubbles, and it hits him, you are still at frame disadvantage (approximately -2). And, if you sidestep a bubble, but Algol is already doing another one, he will re-align and therefore the bubble will track as if you didn't sidestep at all. I encourage this be tested in order to see what I mean.

Now, hopefully you can imagine why this adds unnecessary strain on getting up close (against a determined turtle, at least). But let's look at why it's so annoying exactly: if you begin to breakthrough Algol's space, the mixups begin. The problem is, he can easily shuffle his options (with lows/throws) but then it becomes difficult to react to if you have no idea what to anticipate exactly (which will be the case, since getting close in the first place took you long enough for him to "randomize" his choices). But whatever happens, you are going to face some mean interrupts and mix-ups. It's up to you- stay in safely, eat his command throw, get BB'd, or eat the awesome 33B combo (counterhit or regular hit). No one else in the game has such a launcher! It is just like Xianghua's 33B from SC3 console (but Japanese version)... because in that version, it was safe on block, does 1/3 life damage, and was i18 in speed! Algol's is even better. It can be used as a regular mix-up from neutral position (decent speed), is safe on block (what the hell?!), does 1/3 life damage (exact amount, not just approximate) ...AND it rings out. Fun stuff, huh?

Well, I know that's pretty disgusting, but I thought this was all worth pointing out.

I got a name for Algol.
Algol = Sailor Mercury

WTF! This is not Street Fighter why am I fighting a Shoryuken character.

In all honesty, Algol with his Mercury Bubbles is irritating. Especially if you are playing against somebody that is trying to learn the game. It would piss them off, quit and then base the game through this one character.

I for one think he should be banned but its not my call really. I can just place my vote as a regional director which i did. Let's see what the regional directors vote on.

Cha Cha: BooYah!!!
