Hello there 8WayRun Community! This would be my first discussion I post so I thought I would start with something to see who here has a like mind.

My personal pet peeve with CAS is that a lot of people do not seem to make their own...well character. You see nothing but waves after waves of Clouds, Hulks and Narutos. I myself just make my own unique characters. It makes me smile to see others make their own creations, especially when they are made to an interesting degree of creativity.

My question is to all of you here, what characters have you made that are of your creation and, if you have thought that far into it, what is their personality and reactions to other characters? If you wish to add screen shots or even drawn pictures, I myself would love to see them.

I have made backstories for my characters that intertwine with the canon events and the other characters I've made.
Heres a few I have archived...

DSCN1353.JPG

Scarlett is a 400 year old "priestess" and leader of the Brotherhood of Blood. She is hunting Soul Calibur to destroy it so her Brotherhood can take over the world and preserve their immortality which is sustained through human sacrifice. Scarlett is a fierce enemy of Andromeda and a former friend to Zasalamel whilst in his previous life. Scarlett also fought Ivy to a draw just before Siegfried defeats Nightmare in SCIV. To continue the line of succession for SE hosts, Scarlett creates a spacial rift in which Sophitia cannot sustain Soul Edge and Scarlett makes Sophitia into the next host for SE to advance her plans further.

DSCN1348.JPG

This is Andromeda, an original NPC of mine. She is a citizen of Athens who was Sophitia's rival for a time but became her enemy when Sophitia married Rothion (who is her brother), this enraged Andromeda because she was having an incestous relationship with Rothion and she could not continue her relationship with Sophitia bearing his children. Andromeda still truly loves Sophitia but jealousy blinded her and she has become corrupted from Soul Blade until SCIII. After she realizes her idiotic ways she attempts to save Sophitia from Soul Edge. After Sophitia is "killed" between SCIV and SCV Andromeda is corrupted by the "light of humanity" (Soul Calibur) and is forced to hunt Soul Edge and destroy it to make a "perfect world". Andromeda is about 16 in Soul Blade, and 35 in SCV but has been immortalized by Soul Calibur. She is generally a snobby and ridiculous person but can forget about her status to help herself or her companions. Andromeda and Scarlett are very fierce rivals and will do anything to kill each other. Andromeda fights Cassandra and Seung Mi-Na at the end of SCIV taking Soul Calibur from them.

DSCN1367.JPG

This is Elena, a young girl from Russia looking for her half-sister in Japan. Elena has died her hair black to fit in but she still stands out with her brightly colored eyes. Elena wishes nothing more to find Setsuka and bring their mother -who abandoned both of them- to justice.

I notice your a fan of white. Anyway, I dig the design, especially the first two. I will post mine soon, I just need to make a few adjustments is all. Any others you have? 8D

My 2cents

Problem is 95% of people aside bad tastes got zero idea of what is character design

Example you see over and over cool guy #236 and cool girl #469 (lol a guy made a fucking 50 cas gallery where 48 or 49 was all girl)
In a fight game you(the chara designer) have to create a cast where everybody have his "role"
Street Fighter is the ABC of FG chara design... you got the cool main char, but you got also the muscle guy,the fat guy,the strange guy,the monster char and so on

Another thing is the stereotype/etnic look: most chara designer follow it,and SC too... you got the japanese samurai, the european knight and so on.
Most people just ignore this, the average creation is just #345 beautiful girl/guy without identity or etnicity, just a group of random "cool" stuff put on, with the "colour scheme"(lol we talk later about it) to keep it together... no,it don't work. Don't seem a SC character, seem just a random girl kicked out from a random fantasy anime

Oh,the colour scheme :D
Is usefull? Mmmh,yeah,maybe
To create a SC char you need it,most of SC chars got a 2-3 colours main scheme, with other colours to break it a lil bit(yeah, you have to break it too).
Problem is peoples believe to much at this shit, "omg teh colour scheme" is the CaS mode fav quote of anybody don't understand nothing about chara design and pretend to know
Is not like it's not important, it is, simply is'nt some kind of magic that turn every random shit in something good.

Last but not last, the whole creative process.
How to create a decent CaS(or in general a decent chara design)?
The trick (aside have eye/artistic sense) is all about how start think the character,is all about make a lot of question
What type of char you want do? From wich country? Wich stereotype/etnicity/role will have? Wich type of "personality"(i don't care about story,i talk about the visual side) will have? You need it in your "cast" or will be the #34 of the same type? Following the previous one, wich type of char may need your group? It will fit with SC?

I know it seem a lot of useless things, but on reality is the ABC of the chara design

ps: i don't know if was the right thread, but anyway is a decent hint of the direction for exit from the 95% of CaS trash :D

I have a couple more up my sleeve but if you want to check out a few of my others heres a link to my thread. http://8wayrun.com/threads/jacks-cas-collection.6093/

I for sure love the first 2's design. Any particular thought in mind when making these characters?
Thanks so much! I really just got inspiration from Pocky-Yoshi's CaS when I was making Scarlett and I thought hey wouldn't she be better as a pale ginger with a storyline where she didn't really have a soul? When I was working on Andromeda I made 7 costumes for her I still need to post all the rest here for you but the one already posted is based on Sophitia SCIII/IV costume 1. All of Andromeda's first 5 outfits are based on Sophitia costumes throughout the games (Soul Blade - SCV) The other two costumes I will show here very soon are Andromeda's SCV attire. I've made her costumes that go with her storyline to show her possession by Soul Calibur and she even wields SC now.

these are my originals i made ^^

Pretty interesting ideas. I would like to put something up as well, but it will take some time. It's good to know people actually make characters with back stories to them. I thought I was the only one.
Considering we are talking about a fighting game, making you own story 9 times out of 10 can be better than the cannon that is actually there xD. Of course, you also get the weaboo stories of wanna be final fantasy games or wanna be naruto stories. But lets just focus on the good ones yeah? xD

I believe working in sterotypes to characters should be done away with, but on the whole I agree. As a new 3d modeler I have started recently on character modeling (i will post it some point later int he future here). And what drives me crazy around me is that people are under the assumption that they have to copy instead of bloody well making their own unique characters. Sure, get inspiration, but do not go out of your way to make a character that already exists. Two reasons for that being a.) if it is original then they can not compare it to anything else, this makes it look a lot less like crap if they can not compare it to the original, and more importantly b.) you would have no creativity if you do not understand what makes a character.

Take Kanji from Shin Megami Tensei P4. A character who struggles with his sexuality and how other would view him because of this. He puts on the macho act but not to the point of half shirts. I respect this character in many ways, and design is a big part of it. Does this mean I am going to make a copy of him. HAH! Your out of your mind. Character design needs to have the thought of the....well character. Color scheme is important of course. Hair also tells a lot about a character. If it is ridiculous, chances are, so is the character.

On the whole, this goes more into just Soul Calibur, but into the idea of story writing and even drawing the character.

Hm well I don't fit into this whole back story thing but I would consider all my CaS random creations. I never really thought of any other characters when making them. I just like making my character look good in my own way. Also I do like to color scheme idk why. Here's the link to my random CaS's and you all can think of names and stories yourselves because I'm not into that kind of creativity.

I've been looking for a good thread like this and I agree with you (the creator of this thread) about people making their own characters. I'm tired of seeing crappy knockoff CaS and non original characters.

this is the only character that I have a picture of right now whos appearance hasn't changed. His name is Omega and is a royal knight of a royal family. I have pretty much a story I've been developing since jr. high called the Moonlight series. it's a manga I've been developing recently, a trilogy novel, and a multi-part book that is separate take on the trilogy. It's a modern/futuristic fantasy with vampires, witches, (no werewolves but there are shapeshifters) demons, angels, all that jazz. I'm sad to say that I'll be ending the Moonlight series after this last story called No Tomorrow and focus on the comic or a new story.
