Playing Hilde with controller

I'm thinking of picking up Hilde, but I had a hard time holding charges while playing normally. What button configuration (controller players) do you guys use? How do you hold your controller...as in how do you hold the buttons and play?

Well, first of all, I play on a saturn pad (six face buttons). I only use one mapping really, which is A+K that's set to R1. I have R2 as guard which I hold sometimes if I've got two charges and need to be guarding.

But really...I can't efficiently play the "always doing charges" style where folks throw out one charge move after another. It's effective, throwing out several high frame advantage moves close together, but I've been managing by using her normals.

um yea...her normals seem pretty bad except for poking, gotta abuse the charges with hilde, any other controller player out there?

I believe one of the regular button configurations has L2 set as B.

Im comfortable with only a face button for A, as long as I have a B assigned to the shoulder im pretty good.

Saturn pad? Normal-attack-only Hilde? Holy cow, you are doing it wrong.

Anyways, people should just use whatever pad config Ceirnian uses, which is probably L1 - A, R1 - B, and then normal face buttons. Then you just use your pointer fingers on those shoulder buttons for constant charging and charge combos, and use your thumb on the normal face buttons for normal attacks and guarding. Then an extra L2 and R2 for whatever, maybe A+K and A+B+K+G critical finish button.

That's my guess anyways, as a stick player.

Only normal attacks? Hell no, I'd get nowhere playing like that. I'm generally charging A or B, just not both at the same time. I've heard of and tried the shoulder mapping deal before, it just didn't feel natural for me...and it's an advantage that stick players don't have access to, which seems kind of dumb imo (i.e., you can use normal A/B attacks while you're charging. The charge is gone, however)

I've basically just been punishing whiffs with the B charge moves vs players/characters until they know to stay close and safe, at which point I use more A charges.

When I play on pad, I usually have R1 - A, R2 - B, L1 - A+K, L2 - B+G. On a stick I'll either have only four buttons, or I'll have an A and B mapped on the very far end of the stick.
ie -
A - B - K - A
G - A - K - B
the bottom row on the stick is configured such that if I need to CF, I don't have to hold G and drop charges, I can just quickly move my left hand from the stick to hit them for easy CF.

I can definitely see the advantage of using the shoulders to access moves mid charge or break throws, however past experience with pissy tournament organisers has shown that I can't rely on them to be available. In any case, I've gotten quite comfortable playing with claw and have no problems executing moves.

Having used a stick forever, I tried to use a controller before I managed to get a 360 stick, back when SC4 came out.

I'm used to left-hand is movement/guard, right hand is all attacks. So, I used standard face buttons, A charge on right hand top bumper, B charge on right hand trigger, and B charge left hand top bumper. I put G on left hand trigger.

When you're starting to learn, using just the right index finger for charges seems most important. However, when you need to link charge moves in Hilde's combos, switching between left bumper and right bumper seems to be a good way to do it.

My actual opinion? Invest in an arcade stick.

Personally, I prefer playing Hilde on a Pad than on a stick, as it feels more natural holding down triggers than it does holding down arcade buttons, but due to control layout rulings, pad isn't really that viable down under. That said, Hilde on a stick is still very accessible.

took me a day of practice to get doom combo down %100 with out binds

just let go of buttons

it feels really natural with alot of practice

Playing hilde on a pad is like playing Megaman X. I'm not even joking, I use the shoulder in that game alot too. That's one of the reasons I clicked with pad so fast with her.

So i just had an idea. I have a couple old sticks with happ parts from the last generation of systems that i've been meaning to wire up to a PS3 controller. So on the micro switches under the buttons, there are 3 prongs. I know that one of the prongs is for the ground wire, and one is for reading the button press. I've never used the other prong, but unless i'm wrong, that prong is for reading the button as pressed from neutral right?

If i'm right about this, i was thinking that when i wire one of my sticks, i could do this to 2 of the buttons. By doing this I could have one of those buttons set to A and the other to B, which should constantly charge her charge moves without me having to hold anything (and leaving me with my normal buttons to use regular attacks). Whenever i wanna use a charge move, i should be able to just press the charged A or B button and that would cause it to release.

Has anyone tried this before?

Standard for face buttons.

L2 - B
R2 - A+K (so you can use A+K for things like 6A+K but holding it counts as an A charge)

Its almost a crime how this makes charging seamless. Even though tapping your second "set" cancels your current charge, long as I hold the shoulders the charge instantly begins once I let one B go, so hypothetically, I can space with BB while holding my shoulder B, if they try to rush in I already have a C1 B ready for them. Its fabulous.
