Pyrrha Patch Post

So just thought I'd make a topic specifically for talking about the patch and how it specifically effects our girl Pyrrha. So to start off, in the unlikely event you haven't seen Pyrrha's changes:

236B (Angel's Strike): Increased recovery.
236:B (fastest input) (Angel's Strike): Increased recovery.
236236A+B+K (Trinity Strike): Decreased block stun.

So on a glance, Pyrrha got nothing but nerfs, with two of her key moves becoming less safe on block, and nothing positive to off set it. However, as Pyrrha was widely believed to be one of the top characters in the game, many non-pyrrha players are actually upset that she was nerfed as lightly as she was. Whats more, some of the tougher match ups for Pyrrha, such as Natsu, got nerfed heavily, indirectly buffing Pyrrha. Further, even the nerfs she did get only really punish you for making mistakes or throwing out random Angel/Trinity Strikes, so in theory the Pyrrha player who only used those moves in combos or to punish was completely unaffected.

Now I don't personally see myself being even close to being a high level Pyrrha player, so I don't really feel I'm even close to qualified to comment on such a topic, but I'm curious what the rest of you think, did this patch overall improve the situation for Pyrrha, or weaken it? Do you feel Viola is going to be a bad match up for Pyrrha now? Do you feel Pyrrha's nerfs will be felt more then I'm giving them credit for? Or do you feel the nerfs to the rest of the cast out weight Pyrrha's and that overall Pyrrha is going to be even stronger then ever?

I don't mind the nerfs... they are extremely light nerfs imo [see tira, natsu, maxi, leixia].

I do also feel that the nerfs promote less random gameplay and encourage a more solid gameplay style rather than just random stabs and supers. as far as my own personal play goes ... the patch will not affect me since I don't throw out random supers or stabs

I don't consider myself a high level player either ... but I don't feel that viola is going to be any worse of a matchup for pyrrha than she is for anyone else... meaning viola's buffs don't directly affect the pyrrha matchup imo.

even though a few chars got heavily nerfed [tira, natsu, maxi, leixia], there are a few that also gained heavy buffs [cervy, ivy, viola] ... so really, I think she sits at around the same place at she was at pre-patch.

My Pyrrha wasn't really affected. Although I wanna see if it's launch punishable in case I time a punish wrong. And I do fish for a 2bb on occasion. But really...... she got off pretty well. We should probably be celebrating.

And include me in the "I'm not a top Pyrrha player" Club.

I really think think Pyrrha is actually not that high tier of a character, allot of her moves can be countered with ease and she has to play with an awfully small array of moves to keep her game safe.

236B being more negative frames on block does not really affect her game that much. the move is really ment to be used as a punishing move anyway.

As for the CE nerff it isnt that bad.

Now if they would have made 236B slower it would have dropped Pyrrha down a tier or two.. because lets face it.. that move is her trump card.

I would be in the ' I'm not a top Pyrrha player club ' as well, in fact I'm in the ' Soul Calibur 5 is my first Soul game ' club as well! That said I was surprised she so got off so lightly actually ( I feel like a skipping record the amount of times I've said that! ) I was honestly expecting a lot more nerfs to the point I freaked out in the topic speaking about the patch announcement... yeah, not one of my proudest moments, imo.

All that they really did was make her less safe, that is all.

I'll admit though the back dash nerf has me worried as I tend to use back dashes a lot in my current game plan. I'm sure I'll adjust though.

I don't really care too much that 236B or her CE are more unsafe now, as those moves are really just for punishes/combos. Besides, a chunk of the cast could already punish 236B on block anyways, so, it that doesn't really change most matchups much. Heck, I rarely ever use her CE at all, generally only when it'll guarantee me a kill on the last round and I feel lazy, or when I'm punishing some -13 move or some move with too much pushback for 236B. I find myself mainly using her meter for 66B BE tech traps/whiff punishes and GI'ing, as I don't think her CE is really cost effective for the little bit of damage it adds to some combos nor is it much better than 236B:4.

Indirectly, Pyrrha will be a stronger character from this patch. Nerfs for the other characters will indirectly strengthen her. Exactly how much, I'll wait until I've actually played with the patch to comment much on that. I never had troubles with Natsu/Leixia/Maxi/Tira (so, the nerfs can only make it easier I guess), and I haven't ever played anyone good with SC5 Cervantes so dunno what effect those changes have at all.

The Viola matchup does concern me now. I thought Viola was already really strong, but then again, I haven't really taken the time to ever figure out that matchup in detail yet.

I agree with Fenro, I don't think Pyrrha is by any means a high tier character. Really, most of her stuff can be shut down by a good player via step/JG. Against a bad player, Pyrrha is virtually unstoppable when you get to just sit back and 236B punish unsafe stuff all day long, have your 66B BE's actually blocked for massive frame advantage + guard meter damage and not JG'ed/stepped + punished, and never have your linear stuff stepped. But, she's definitely not a weak character either. So really, I don't feel any changes are all that necessary. I'm actually completely shocked that she wasn't nerfed by the complaints of some of the scrubs online who are just free 236B punish pincushions and don't understand that attacking at disadvantage constantly is a bad idea.

In any event, Pyrrha is limited by her range, linearity and general lack of any scary mixup (best you usually have is mid/throw generally, none of her lows are all that scary being either light pokes and unsafe [1K, 2K, etc] or slow and unsafe [1A, 4AA, 236AA, etc]). Pyrrha's damage isn't super high either.

The back dash nerf does hurt Pyrrha some, but, I think it also helps her a lot as her range sucks, so anything to keep people from backing away from her as safely is fine in my books.

In any case, the Pyrrha mirror matchup is less annoying now because you can punish her stab easier without the fear of getting stabbed in the face for being 2 frames too slow.

Honestly this change is makes her more balanced. Although, she may be indirectly buffed due to her competition getting nerfed.

Yes this. I hate having to resort to using BB or the like to punish 236B online.

*Invading Pyrrha's Arena to see her nerfs...

Daaaamn. Raph got screwed really bad. If I face Pyrrha, now, better to ring myself out. Guess Pyrrha is more OP than ever (and I say OP, lightly).

From a non pyhrra player perspective i can say that they nerfed her the right way.
Most of her stuff isn't broken or anything and the majority of the cast could already punish her 236 B.
In my eyes the nerf was just throwing a bone to the slower chars who weren't able to really punish her 236 B, who therefore undisputably had a very bad MU against her and really needed a helping hand.
For me being a sieg player, the nerf means a lot because her stab is now punishable by 3(B), which makes the MU less daunting.

Chars that already had a fair MU against pyrrha: Unaffected
Chars that had a bad MU against Pyrrha: got a little help

Imo, thats the right way to balance a game.

Im pretty content with her nerfs. Oh btw im in the the "I'm not a top Pyrrha player" club too. Third row 2nd seat to the left. I actually thought she was gunna get brutally raped with the nerf stick. ( cough Natsu cough)

im in the "totally pro look at me now pyrrha player" club, and I have one tip after reading this: buffer in 236B punishes, don't try to do it once ur block stall has ended, this is a much more effective way to punish so it wouldnt matter if it was 1 frame punish window, I do this online and it works pretty well, I really don't have issues having my free stabs blocked like I used to, I remember natsus always blocking my stabs after I would block their AAB, but no longer!!

I dont know if you know...i think this has been answered but i dont wanna look for it, how many frames did they slow 236B by?

236B is not slower, it is still i14, it is only more unsafe, -18 I believe? just use it only to punish, don't throw it out otherwise
