So I had a go at SCV and beat some guy online so I went crazy and bought a concole just for the game

Hey everyone.

I was pretty amazed yesterday when I went to visit my friend's place yesterday to have a go at SCV for the first time on his x-box (I don't - well, didn't - own a new generation concole myself). It must have been about two years since I last played a Soul Calibur game, but I got in the zone with my old main Mitsurugi pretty quickly, so after comprehensively beating my mate (who is a complete newbie to the series), I decided to go and try online mode.

First of all, I was very impressed with how well the online mode worked. Never played any fighting games online before, but I was pretty impressed about the lack of lag and all that annoying shit.

Secondly I was even more surprised to win a player named andyroo xDS, apparently ranked 24th in Europe in a player match (3-2) in only my second game online. Now, I know it must have been just luck and Raphael must not have been one of his strongest characters, cause I have no business winning players that experienced, but it did give me something of a boost of confidence in my ability. I don't know shit about the theory behind the game (frames n' stuff?), but I used to always beat my friends in it back in the day so I guess I must have some intuition to how the shit works. My Mitsurugi playing is based purely on basic mixing highs and the couple of easy lows he has + throws when I feel they are not going to be expected. I guess that must be about as basic as it gets, but apparently you can get pretty far with that!

So anyway, what ended up happening is that I bought an x-box360 and thought I'd register to a SC forum to see if I could learn some shit to improve my game.

So whaddya guys reckon? Is it possible that those hundreds of hours of playing SCII back in the day mean that I can be straight away good at V or did I just get really, really lucky?

Also, what are the most major new things I need to learn about the newest game. The game felt maybe a bit quicker than I remember it being, but playing Mitsurugi felt very familiar to how he was at IV (which I used to play at an another friend's place) so what exactly is the new shit in general besides the new characters?

Also, do serious players play this thing with a pad or a stick? (There must be a thread dedicated to this somewhere...)

Hey man, glad to have you here.

Mitsurugi is undeniably the best character for a new player, and he'll be especially efficient if you already have basic fighting game knowledge, as you seem to from your past in SC.

You're right, this game is a bit faster than the other SC games. There's also a new meter system as you may have noticed, and a lot of characters have had their move sets narrowed down, but it's really not so bad. Mitsurugi's moves have been altered a little, but still serve the same purpose. He also had his "relic" stance removed.

As for sticks, they're definitely unnecessary for SC, but some players prefer them because it's what they're used to.

Again, glad to have you here, welcome to the SC community, enjoy yourself, don't mind the hostility, and have fun :)

Hey welcome to 8wr! Stick are not really needed because the inputs for Soul Calibur are nor that of blazblue or other games with harder and faster inputs. What you need in SC is great reaction time. Rugi a great character for starters and also has a bit of potential for higher play. Although I would suggest switching to someone else if you plan to become a competitive player later on. Then again play whoever you want and be good with them. Don't pick a character if you don't like them but they are good. If you need any help around the site feel free to pm me!

Hah, yeah I knew that Mitsurugi was one of the easier characters to play. I used to be good with Sophitia too, so Pyrrha should work for me in this game, I suppose. My Siegfried, Raphael and Taki (now Natsu?) were also quite decent back in the day... Don't know which ones out of those have the most potential, but first thing now will be to learn the new characters!

One of my problems when it comes to being a competitive player is a shitty location in the Northern part of Finland. I was excited to hear that SCV supposedly has a pretty decent online system so I suppose that will be my only option for measuring myself against good players.

Just out of interest, what makes you think Mitsu isn't good in high level play?

I mean, his mix up game is incredible - having the 2K BE mix up also makes his RO game pretty deadly. And his punishment game is solid with 6B8 (i14) and 236B (i16?)
I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, I was just curious :P

Oh I just dont think he has as much potential as say Cervantes or something. He defiantly is good for competitive but There are a few better choices IMO. And rugi is so played he is one of the most known matchups. all opinion though.

I'll leave it at this, Mitsurugi is basically Ryu imho. Easy to pick up, yet very few are called masters of Mitsu. Ready to rise to the challenge of being called a good Mitsu?

However, it's usually a great idea to try out other characters just to see what tickles your fancy. All in all welcome and hope to see you around.
