Soul Calibur: Tag Team Experience

As an avid fan of Soul Calibur 4's tag system loosely implemented into story mode and Tower of Lost Souls, I would like to ask a question. How many people, if one came out would actually support a Soul Calibur Tag Team game? Of course, it wouldn't be the same as that implementation and would be cleaned up immensely to support proper scaling, proper balance, and many other things, I've been, in my spare time, working on an idea to potentially, (and most likely uselessly, unfortunately) give to Namco Bandai as the next Soul Calibur experience. And as such, would offer a massive change in the series.

However, this tag team, unlike Tekken Tag Tournament 2, I would only want to be created if a solution was found to be able to play with friends both online and offline. My reason for this is primarily because I would like a fighting game of the future to be created to adjust to the ever evolving games of the game market. Many titles are being created to offer more experiences with friends, and I think fighting games deserve the same treatment.

Also, in my opinion, Soul Calibur, with it's story depth and character depth could be done as a tag game much better than other fighting games, and could, in both single-player, and multi-player, deliver exactly what the Soul Series was known for all those years ago.

So, who would support/buy game if it was possible? And just so you all know, it would include both the old and new characters of Soul Calibur.

It would be interesting to say the least :) But in all honesty I would prefer it as a mode in SC6 :p aka Team Battle >.<

I would and I wouldn't, at the same time. See, the game being a tag game and not a part of the main story gives an excuse for a temporary addition to the storyline (for the length of the game, basically), to encourage massive amounts of character development in addition to the merging of story-lines for both old and new characters. I'd love a Soul Calibur 6, but I think the series needs a stimulus package to give it a real boost back to critical acclaim. And Soul Calibur Tag Team, a way to give the series a serious refreshing new, purposeful, innovative way of bringing in people of all gaming backgrounds to play Soul Calibur, is probably the easiest way for Namco Bandai to do that.

As much as I hate to say this, bringing back the old characters if even for a little, would benefit them greatly.

I'd only be in favor of it if they kept the balance of gameplay the top priority. I *LOVE* how tight the tiers are in V, I don't know how I could stand going back to imbalanced games again after playing it so much :(

Tag Mode in Soul Calibur is my dream. Tag Mode in a game with characters so distinct, it would be wonderful.

It would give some players incentive to try out new characters and see which synchronize well with each other. It would make for a very flashy and fantastic MvC-like... FUCK!

I feel the same way. As someone who has liked two lesser powerful characters over the last 2 Soul Calibur (3 if you include my half a year or so with Zasalamel), I wouldn't only want the balance to match the Tier tightness in Soul Calibur V, I would shoot for improvement even upon that if possible. Story mode (Only for opportunistic reasons.*), game balance, and net-code (for 4 player online especially) would all be my top priorities if I have any jurisdiction over the game.

*The reason why story mode would be a priority to me is not because I'm a more casual player or even because I'm a story mode fanatic. It's because a canon game with all the characters has more potential for character development than arguably any Soul Calibur in history, and it would be a shame to waste that opportunity.

Agreed. And the way I'd have my tag system based would make it even better, because it would make for drastically different advantages and disadvantages of a character when in tag mode and in singles mode, while only having to make one build of the character, and no changes necessary, so I could save Namco money and increase gameplay depth at the same time.

Furthermore, I've even been looking into some of the extra styles in Soul Calibur 3 to see if there's any potential for new entries or new moves based on moves already included in past games. It's looking like a decent prospect so far.

I'm in favor..
However, there are a few who think it's dumb to learn a second character just to compliment your main. If SC added a tag mode, perhaps the option to use the same character or costume swap(say, Cervantes and Revenant with the same style).

Good issue. I'll probably need to analyze how much of an issue that actually is as well, I never really thought about it quite that way. Adding an option to use the same character is definitely the best way to go, most likely, as if you want to play with a friend, it would be awful if you both had the same character as a main and therefore couldn't work together.

i think it'd be very dependent on how tag is done. is it done like Tekken tag, SC4, Mortal Kombat, or DOA? i don't know but i personally think it would kinda get boring after a while just like how watching top gameplay in MvC got boring. people just learn the best juggle combo then just spam it. they just try little gimmicks to get you in the air but once it happens i can see the mass amounts of people rolling their eyes at seeing the same thing again. and that would also take away from enjoy watching it as a fighting game. MvC3 was entertaining to watch for a while because it was flashy. bright colors and animations and it was fast. SC doesn't have those elements.

The problem with tagging in 3d games, is the basic effect of tagging is to increase combos and damage, and to prolong the game artificially. This is not a good result, because the longer you remove one players interactivity with the game, the more the game suffers.

I think the only way this can work is if the "tag" or "team" mechanics aren't related to just combos. More preferably, not related to combos at all. This would require re-inventing the wheel. Think about how much people bitched about GUARD IMPACT changing in SC5, without even thinking about why it was changed that way. Now consider what people would do if they had to change core game mechanics in order to make the tagging/team mechanics work.

Youve no idea how much i want this...

Most of my customs are at least in pairs, some have more. Id love to be able to use them together.

Xia(Viola) with Camax(Algol), her father. Both incredibly combo-centric. Theyd be devastating together >.> Ive spent a fair amount of time putting combos together in my head just for that... (assuming switching is instant like in IV, and costs a BE)
Picture it... starting with Viola, 44AB BE 6B+K 3K B+K BE, switch to Algol, 6 4A+B BE 88A 2A+B 663B BE B 3B!!!!!!!!! Many many exclamation marks!!! Orbs, everywhere!

I want to see my characters do this rather badly. I dont think it would be detrimental to the series to have a TagSC as a separate title, however as a mode, it could potentially divide the online population and cause some major balance issues. However, as i said, a lot of my characters have teammates and it would be fantastic to see them in action.

Is that why TTT is bad?
