Strategies for fighting against Astaroth and Voldo?

HiguraShiki

[10] Knight
Hey guys!
I am really having a problem fighting against these two characters. To be more specific:
Astaroth: I just can't seem to fight any Astaroth player correctly. Everytime I go for a hit, he usually bumps me, he always mixes a bunch of grabs in between his attacks, and once I get hit, it is pretty much GG for me.

As for Voldo, I just can't really predict what he is going to do. I tend to have an especially hard time when he enters his (crouching stance? I dono he is just on the ground) and begins attacking me. Forgive my noobiness! Any help would suffice!

Hi there, first of all, good on you on asking for help. Means you actually want to learn the matchup.

It would help if you posted the character you're using so that people can give you more specific advice, but as far as general fighting strats go:

Astaroth: Most good Astaroths want you to duck and have really good ways in doing so. That's because he really doesn't have many good/fast/safe options otherwise. Bull Rush (66K), Knee (6K) are probably the most well known. Fighting him, then, requires you to be able to break throws. If it's a choice between going for a 50/50 break or ducking, the former is the better choice most of the time. Also, be sure to step/jump his slow verticals/lows -- punishing him is the best way to win against him. Lastly, avoid the corner at all costs -- it becomes a real uphill battle from there.

Voldo: You really have to know what each of his moves does -- no way around this one. Otherwise, you will get wrecked by good Voldos simply because you don't know the matchup. Other than that, know that a lot of his moves tech crouch and that he will almost always want to be in back stance. He doesn't have as many good step killer options, so make sure to step or backstep his verticals when you can. Poking is also really good against him because if he blocks any hit, he will turn around. Simply put, avoid his BT mixups by making him block a hit.

Good luck.

I'll add my bit:

Astaroth: To beat good Astaroth players you need to be able to break grabs most of the time. Also, stepping is really useful against his verticals which you can then punish. 1A is a relatively easy move to see coming; I would suggest jumping it and either grabbing him as a punisher... or even using your Critical Edge!

Voldo: You have to be aware of his stances, they can be one of his best weapons against an unaware player. Since he plays best in Back Stance, grab him a few times to punish him for his INSOLENCE. *Ahem* Sorry, anyway, also be prepared to break grabs, as when Voldo is in Back Stance, when he grabs he kind of sidesteps and grabs you - might dodge some of your verticals so if he is close up I suggest using horizontals.

Good luck.

Ahh thank you for the replies! To be specific, I main Raphael and I also play Cervantes.
I am beginning to learn how to play Hilde. So if there are any specific matchup strategies, I would like to know them please!

I am beginning to learn how to play Hilde.

c3b = game over for Asta. Back up if you can, see if they commit with something hoping to hit you at range then release c3b. In close 4a/2a will interrupt grab attempts and knees allowing you to return with a grab.

If you're fast enough you can jump Asta's low sweeping attack and punish but that approach will develop with familiarity.

Voldo is hard to say, i'm still working on that one. A skilled Voldo will usually get the better of me as Hilde.

As a Viola player, Astaroth probably gives me the most trouble out of the "big" characters. I always make the wrong decision to block/sidestep/anticipate throws, plus I'm still learning how to get up close safely. So any Viola tips would be cool. Never fought any Voldos so far.
