The Dreams Thread

Interesting stuff.

Ive always been curious about dreams, how they come about and what the meanings are. Ive also been curious as to why I very seldom remember what I dreamt about.
any insight on that?

Well I'm no expert, but as far as I know there's different stages to sleep. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is the one where you dream. In order to remember your dreams, you must wake up either in the middle of REM (when the dream is happening) or immediately after it. Otherwise you're waking up during a time when you're not dreaming, so the memories are not stored. What's interesting is that the brain doesn't really "store" memories of dreams (at least in the same way "regular" memories are stored), so the only reason you remember a dream when wake up during REM is that your brain abruptly transitions between the sleeping and awake states, so the dream is still "fresh."

It is recommended to keep a journal of every dream you remember and write on it as soon as you wake up, describing your dream "backwards" (with the last events of the dream first and going back until you can no longer remember), as you'll remember less and less of the dream as the day goes on. I'm not really sure how this helps, but people who do it claim they develop better dream retention over time.

I once had a dream where I was in the Burmuda Triangle. I was kidnapped and taken to some island by a bunch of grey people. They were zombie looking people. I was tied up to a tree. Then I woke up. I guess I was never seen again.

Also, I've heard that the portion of your brain responsible for long term memory storage is somehow partially shut down or something while you sleep, but the short term memory is still running. I don't know if it's true.

As for the interpretations, I find most of it to be a bunch of hooey, like "if you dream about cheese, it means you have an unhealthy relationship with your cousin." But I did a workshop once where we offered our own interpretations to our dreams, which seems more reasonable. The only one who can interpret your dreams is you.

Well, I do believe dreams can tell you certain things about a person, but insofar as having predictive powers or hidden messages in the form of symbolism... that's just made up.

So, I just thought I would share this one.

In this dream, I saw someone look exactly like how I do. (Note: No, I don't look like CM Punk.)
He was walking through a grove of sorts, no fog, just a very cloudy day. He was wearing armor and carried a sword and shield. He looked around the grove and seemed lost.
That is until he came upon a small graveyard, that was encircled by willow trees, then his eyes filled with a sense of, I guess you could say anticipation.
Leaving the grove, he slowly walked up to one of the more elaborate tombstones, and knelt down.
He then had a look of emptiness upon his face, and it was also visible in his eyes.
It ends there.

I actually have had a couple soulcal dreams. One in particular was involving myself and Viola. I basically replaced Z.W.E.I as her partner and we travel though a dense forest and chatted about God and Love. Eventually we made it to a small village and she began to tell villagers their fortunes for money. I remember sitting next to her and playing violin as she went to work. I wish I could remember more, it was pretty rad.

Sounds like this is on the verge of fan fiction, lol.

So I had a dream and I thought I should write something about it. Not gonna bore you guys with all the details, (I don't even remember them as it is and some people say hearing about other people's dreams are dull) but it was about old fashioned like 1920's ish cartoon pirates. And they sung this song which I remembered and thought I'd share before I forget it:

If you're wailing that your belly is empty
And you got no place to call home
Take a little old trip
On a black sailed ship
And you'll fill your pockets with gold.

Oh the price of the journey is modest
It's a fair trade for the toll
It's a jolly old cruise
Doing as you choose
For a little tarnish on your soul.

If you're fool enough to dream of adventure
Come along and join our band
You can sail the salt seas
thinking that you're free
And at night you'll dream of land.

2 Nights ago I woke up from a dream, went back to sleep and woke up from another one. I can't remember what happened now, but i still remember a beaming happiness, i can still recollect that feeling now.

Felt like sharing.
