Valkyria!

Heh, weekends out and I finally get to start playing Valkyria Chronicles. If you are an SRPG junkie, you owe it to yourself to get this game. Heck, if you own a ps3, you owe it to yourself to get this game, because it is drop-dead gorgeous. Its not as refined as games like fire emblem, but it is ridiculously fun.

The third person shooter element definitely has a satisfying feel to it, either that or I'm just easily amused by running up to soldiers and shooting them in the face. Whatever the case, it is certainly a breath of fresh air.

I'm currently playing this game and I'm totally in-love with it. The "CANVAS" graphics system definitely makes the game look stylish and gorgeous. The battle system itself is just fun.

Jann Walker is the best. XD

Lol yeah this game was good, I bought the special edition from Japan that came with a tank and Alicia figure ^^

Edii and Selvaria DLC are out for JPSN.

I picked the game up yesterday, myself. I played it for about 8-9 hours before finally peeling myself off the couch, lol. I'm loving absolutely everything about this game.

I believe SEGA went all out with this one. It seemed like a bit of a risky idea though, this battle system I mean. I've never seen anything like it before.

It's like a S-RPG, but not, lol. I look at this game as like a hybrid type. They just had so many ideas, so they just threw them all into this blender and out came Senjou no Valkyria :P

But really, I like everything about this game though. The first person I recruited when I looked at the roster was Vyse :3. I couldn't wait to have him as part of my squad, lol. I'll probably go write a review of the game up on my blog after I beat it (which should be around next week at some point, I'd say).

It was definitely as iKotomi put it though. A breath of fresh air.

The third person shooter element imo just replaces the RNG use in traditional srpg's with a different RNG. It's definitely the greatest and weakest point of the game though. The shooter element has a certain immersive quality to it that makes it feel like you're actually in the battlefield rather than controlling chess pieces. But that's one of the key qualities that make srpg's fun imo, the really deliberate control you have allowing you to flawlessly execute a strategy.

All the issues I have with the game are linked to this. First, it's not particularly hard. Because there is such freedom of motion in this game, it's like the difference between trying to write AI for chess, and trying to write AI for go. Because your tank is the only unit that can really "tank" you can't just ramp up the difficulty by increasing the enemy units, as it would probably make the game impossible to manage, except for very specifically designed maps with a lot of cover. Making the enemy units stronger is also not as viable of an option because the game seems to have been designed around you being able to take out enemies in one turn. Because the enemy phase can't be sped up practically, it would also make it that much more painful to watch enemy turns.

The other issue I have is that it rewards fast play. To me, it seems like the point of strategy games isn't to play them fast, but to beat them. I find the fact that in traditional srpg's you pretty much have to play slow and deliberately because a single mistake can kill you is very satisfying, sort of like that feeling after winning a close match by time out in a fighter. The fact that you miss out on experience because you chose to play it safe is sort of obnoxious to me. But I digress, the system works well enough, and you can see it as just an extra challenge.

Though I am curious on whether or not more and stronger enemies would actually amount to an enjoyable challenge. I know in Japan, they released a hard mode dlc, so hopefully that comes by here, since this game definitely would merit a replay because the gameplay itself is just solid fun.

I've been having some problems with the game as of recently. See, I keep treating this as a traditional-style S-RPG, so I like to take it nice and slow, take minimal damage, etc.

Well..because of that, I usually get a C or D on the missions. I may not lose anybody and take out every enemy unit before capturing the main base, but still..I get a horrible rank because it took me 9 turns to do so. It's just kind of frustrating, really. As for the DLC though, I don't really see us getting Extra Hard Mode, but we might.

I think the first DLC we're getting is for Edy, but I'm not entirely sure about that. All I know is that it's supposed to be available for us in January and we'll be getting Selvaria shortly after. I would like Extra Hard Mode, but that seems like more of a Japanese thing.

I don't know how they feel about giving something like that to us lazy Americans who prefer "LOL EASY MODE" :P

It's for free though, so I don't see why they would leave it out >.>

I watched a trailer of it and thought it looked like absolutely, but after everyone saying its ok im going to have to give it a go.

S-ranks (A-ranks in the NA version) are cake once you get Scouts to Elite Scouts. Alicia can just dash for the flag in most missions and skirmishes, provided you give her some support with orders. It's..almost like cheating. >___>

I want the DLCs! Edy's probably my favorite Shocktrooper next to Vyse and Jane. :D

Lol, I find Edy's voice either really cute or really annoying, very fine line between those though, lol. But I am a sucker for twin pigtails so that tilts it towards really cute for me.

Yeah, Vyse is definitely my favorite Shocktrooper right now. I think next I'd have to say Edy, then Mica. I do have a question though.

You can't exactly occupy the enemy's main camp until you defeat the enemies around the flag first, so how does a scout go about defeating say..2-3 Shocktroopers by him or herself? That's the only reason I never have Alicia rush the main base because she'll just get owned, lol.

What's usually the plan for getting an A like that? I would take Vyse with her, but he can't even keep up with her right now. I can't imagine how hard it would be when she gets Double Movement -_-

Right. There's usually 2-3 enemy units based around the flag. If you've managed to play the whole stage correctly, you should be able to have enough CP to take advantage of and pick them off with headshots one by one, with enough to run to the flag and occupy the base. Orders are a must if you really want a sure survival for Alicia. Evade Boost and Defense Boost (Awaken Potential can help tremendously but not needed and Attack Boost is optional, but I always use it just in-case the enemy survives) are staples and will help make sure she survives (hopefully) enemy attacks on the way to the flag.

Of course..some of the missions require lots of luck and saving in-between turns (for reloading if anything doesn't go your way). I just recently finished mission 11 (smoke screen mission) and that took a bunch of reloading on my part since I wanted to ace that mission first try. :O

Oh, right. Orders, lol. Damn.

I keep forgetting about them, actually. I forget about them or can't end up deciding on who needs what the most. I'll try that plan later though and see how it works out.

Also, I nearly shat a brick when finishing Chapter 7 and getting a B rank, lol. Man, I thought I was going to get a D for sure. Fortunately though, the only loss I had throughout the whole fight was Largo.

Yeah, he ate Selvaria's "pew pew lance". Vyse would have died, but he's fucking crazy, lol. He laid down when she tried shooting at him, then shot her back even though it was pointless to even try.

This was the first mission I ever saved during though. I actually didn't know you could until I went to contemplate on loading my file, cause I thought Selvaria's crew was just going to rush in immediately after arriving and my troops were in bad positions at the time. Instead, I ended up saving it and was like, "Hey, I didn't know you could do that ._.". I got kind of tired of having to re-position all of my units if I had to load during a mission, so it would be a good idea to remember this feature, lol.

As for chapter 11..smoke screen sounds rough, but I'll just have to wait and see when I reach that point. Also, it's not much of a "first" try if you keep on reloading it, now is it?

<.<

Haha, I guess you do have a point. >___>

Chapter 7 was really an epic battle for me. Selvaria coming out of nowhere with that, as you say "pew pew lance" scared the shiz out of me. One person died during that battle..I think it was Homer the Engineer. Meh, he was only filler anyway..

Yeah, A-ranking 11 is pretty rough but if you want to finish it normally, it isn't bad at all. :)

Anyone here like snipers? At first I thought they sucked in the beginning but after getting Marina (emo looking chick with black hair from the demo) and leveling her to Elite Sniper, she can one shot enemies MILES away (provided you have the good sniping weapons). Really too bad they have crap defense, HP, and move.

There is an anime for this game that will start airing next year, if you like the game and anime definitely check it out.

Some Lancer tried to hit my Homer, but completely missed, lol. I love having Homer as part of my squad though. It's just a shame he's so damn depressing :/

I've actually thought about taking him out of the war and replacing him with someone else. I felt kind of bad for recruiting the guy after hearing him say something like, "H..hello. I'll be working with you until the war takes my life" in such a monotone voice. I was like, "Awww man..don't say that >.<! You're not going to die under my watch!".

He hasn't yet, but he is just a 15 year old and he seems very depressed. I think he even has a potential called, "Lonely", IIRC. Anyway, yeah..I definitely like Snipers though. I'm just getting a tad bit irritated when it clearly looks like I should hit my opponent's head, but I miss (the bullet goes far to the right or left).

I'm hoping once they reach Elite, that won't happen as often, if at all. Bah. Stupid Largo..why did he have to die anyway? Oh well..he was just there for the one extra CP anyway >.>

I'll come back later to post my current roster up and who my usual party consists of.

heh, you don't need snipers to be elite level for them to be good. They are really useful for taking out enemy snipers and stragglers. Their main problem is the three shot limit per turn without engineer support.

Well, after waking up about an hour or so ago, I've decided to post my current roster and whatnot before I get started with the game again :P

Squad 7 Roster
---------------

Welkin Gunther (Tank Commander)

Vyse Inglebard (Shocktrooper)
Edy Nelson (Shocktrooper)
Jane Turner (Shocktrooper)
Nina Streiss (Shocktrooper)
Largo Potter (Lancer)
Walter Nash (Lancer)
Hector Calvey (Lancer)
Elysse Moore (Lancer)

Homer Peron (Engineer)
Dallas Wyatt (Engineer)
Cezary Regard (Sniper)
Marina Wulfstan (Sniper)

Usual party setup
-----------------

Welkin Gunther
Alicia Melchiott
Homer Peron
Hector Calvey
Vyse Inglebard
Cezary Regard
Edy Nelson
Freesia York
Nina Streiss

This lineup changes a little bit when more tanks are involved. Sometimes I'll swap out the extra scout for another Sniper and replace a Shocktrooper with another Lancer. Other than that, these are my usual 9 units :P

Ugh..Cherry annoys the living piss out of me.

My squad in battle usually consists of:

Welkin
Alicia
Rosie
Largo (As you can see, I love extra CPs)
Vyse
Edy/Jane
Marina
Dallas
Jann
Aika

I think that's how it went. I'll check it out later..:D

Beat it a week ago, and started over to try S ranking missions from scratch. Once you know the maps, its a lot easier to rush, lol. Really addicting trying to figure out the fastest way to kill everything that matters and capturing. Alicia is overpowered in this game, and Jaeger is awesome.
