Okay. I was in two minds about this - so move it if its a must - whether or not this would go here or the VG discussion.

The jist of it is...due to all the SC OST talk in the SC2 arena I would like to start a thread dedicated to what you think has the best sound track or has some great set pieces in general. I'd suggest links to particular tracks too if people haven't heard them.

Right now I am diggin' the Guilty Gear XX soundtrack since I have never really played it up until now. Pure guitar shredding sickness.

Other favourites of mine have to be the Metal Gear pieces (not all, cause some of it is pretty weak, when i'm not tired i'll specify what I deem is sickness).

Til then, feel free to share what you think is hotsauce.

Oh right now; Slayer's, Johnny's, and obviously Ky's theme gets like 6 thumbs up from me.

it was all about eternal champions on sega cd. i was just playing that shit today. ill soundtrack.

Sega CD? damn that was rare over here. not even touched a SegaCD game dude.

Oh for the record, Potemkin's track is also fucking hard hitting, smack your bitches and your moms with the same pimpslap.

i just sold a sega cd w/ 2 controllers to a collectors shop for $20 this evening. still got another on reserve. plus i got like every game ever for it in one bundle on ebay for like $65

still, i feel like i got ripped off.

on segacd jeopardy, the answer is ALWAYS true...you think it will be false, eventually, but you're wrong. so...whoever goes first always wins as long as they keep picking true.

on streetfighter the movie: the game...hurricane kick is punishable on hit...nuff said.

sadly...i've found the most entertainment by playing the power rangers the movie game...and that is only good as a party backdrop when start bitching about the porno.

still, though, eternal champions is the shit.

I will agree that the Guilty gear soundtrack is awesome. Best songs are: Simple life, Babel Nose, Awe of She, Good Manners and Customs, and Haven't You Got Eyes in Your Head.

The Persona 3 soundtrack is very good too! and from the sound of the battle theme in Persona 4, that will have a good soundtrack too!

wipeout osts >>> all
Not really liking the new WipeoutHD soundtrack though...

Persona 3 actually had TWO soundtracks. They released a second edition with a revamped techno soundtrack, it was SOOOO much better than what we got in America.

Best soundtrack = Final Fantasy VIII

Reasons? I mean it's good but the best?

I've never been partial to a whole soundtrack but I like a lot of Uematsu's stuff. FFXII soundtrack wasn't all that bad either.

I'll say Metal Gear and Soul Series has some of my favorites, but I'm also a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack (especially 13th Anthology). Zelda and Star Fox have some classic kicking tunes, and Smash Bros. Brawl brings the best of the Nintendo world together. Speaking of, I absolutely love Fire Emblem's soundtracks. When musicians can come together and make classical tracks sound modern and amazing, it gets my vote.

Classic wise, Mega Man series (including Legends) had some great tunes, as did other odd and end games like Dynamite Headdy for Sega, Rocket Knight Adventure Series for Sega and SNES, and Super Mario RPG. A lot of Square's music in the olden days (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc.) was fairly exceptional.

I don't mean to prattle on and steal anyone else's choices, I just own a wealth of VG soundtracks. Carry on!

Oh, here's 13th Anthology if anyone's interested:

Castlevania SotN- Perhaps the greatest soundtrack for a videogame.
This is Michiru Yamane's best game, but all her soundtracks are great.

I will also admit that that the Culdcept series also had a great soundtrack.
Soul Blade alone stands high in one of my personal favorite soundtracks.
Super Mario Galaxy had an amazing orchestrated soundtrack and it is one of the few examples where a Japanese Orchestra can actually play good music.

Uematsu does do good stuff, but I generally put put FF at the top of the the best videogame soundtracks. To be honest, I like the older FF soundtracks better than the newer ones. FFVIII did have a really good soundtrack compare to most.

Yasunori Mitsuda is the man.

Notable VG soundtracks

1) Shadow of the Colossus (loved this OST through and through. It does an excellent job setting the tone for environment and battles. Easily on of my favorites)
2) Odin Sphere (another favorite. I'm an overall fan of Basiscape's work and they did an excellent job with Odin Sphere. This game possesses one of my top 5 favorite boss fight themes of all.)
3) Final Fantasy Tactics (My number 1 favorite FF game as well as my number 1 favorite FF soundtrack. Score was also done by Basiscape)
4) Digital Devil Saga Series (of all the Megaten game OSTs, DDS is easily my favorite of them all.)

My top 5 in no order

Super Metroid
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 6
Castlevania SOTN
Soul Cal 2

and shout out Katamary Damacy for being unique and to "Snake Eater's" theme. Its pure awesome!

3) Final Fantasy Tactics (My number 1 favorite FF game as well as my number 1 favorite FF soundtrack. Score was also done by Basiscape)

I forgot to award FF Tactics its props, but it is definitely up there also. It took games a long time to start getting better sound quality than Tactics and the score was just awesome.

all the FF's ive played have great ost's except maybe 12... mgs series are always good. shadow of the collossus has a really nice fitting one as well. then of course theres the jet set radio, ssx and wipeout soundtracks :D
