Chess is a 100% balanced game, and it can be boring as hell sometimes (coming from a guy who plays chess).
On the other hand, I think "reasonable" balance should be sought after.
A person's ability to win should not be as heavily dictated by the character they pick as it was in sc3/4.
I played Sieg for years and was stubborn to learn anyone else. I just loved him too much. But then something happened, the people I played got much much better, and suddenly found myself not winning anymore, like AT ALL.
So then I said "fuck it" and picked up a much faster character, CASS. The difference is night and day. Now I almost never lose (against my group mind you).
This is why balance is important. A person should not be "forced" to switch characters just so they can keep up with the competition. You can practice with Rock until your blue in the face, you won't beat a halfway decent Amy, not ever.
There's a certain point in a person's growth as a player when the only thing holding them back is their character, not them.
