What's the "right" way to approach making decisions in a match?

Am I supposed to watch my opponent for any patterns or do I stay conscious of the moves I am doing to make sure I am not doing actions that are predicatable? Is it possible to do both? Or is it that neither is the way that players approach the game? What do you think about while playing?

Ideally you use moves that limit your opponent's options to that they become easy to predict. Then you pay attention to what they're doing in response to the situations you've created.
