Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate to Receive Free-to-Play Version; Four Characters Available at Start, Fully Playable Online

During a recent interview with Famitsu, Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi revealed that Tecmo Koei is planning to offer a free-to-play version of their upcoming Ultimate expansion to Dead or Alive 5 on PlayStation 3. Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate, and Hayabusa will be completely free of charge from the get-go, along with online play. All single-player modes (besides the story) and non-DLC outfits and stages will also be included, and free users will be able to play online with those who purchased the full game.
Additional characters will be priced at ¥400 (~$3.98 USD) and the story mode will be available to purchase for ¥1500 (~$14.93 USD). Much like other free-to-play titles, paid characters will be available to try without purchase during special promotion periods. It was also announced that save files and downloadable content from vanilla Dead or Alive 5 will carry over to Ultimate.
At this point in time, only a Japanese release for this free-to-play version has been announced, but we’ll be sure to let you know when news regarding other regions becomes available.
For now, feel free to let us know what you think of this offer. There has been a bit of discussion recently regarding fighting games possibly making the transition to free-to-play, and this is one of the first instances we’ve seen of an established company going that route with a well-known title. If this should reach your country, will you be interested in trying it out?

They found a perfect excuse to not include the DLC didn't they? Sure, when you tack on all the future DLC the full experience will cost over $200, but it's okay because the basic game is free. >_> If that's how they're going to do business I'll get the full version for free and play offline. Seems like so far the only series to not screw over people is VF, although I really wish they'd add a story mode already.

-Ein is based on DOA2 but have new moves. Users from DOA2 will not have any problem using him from the beginning.
-Jacky and Momiji are both made to be easy to use.
-with free version, you will be able to fight against all the characters
-they are planning promotions where they will have a certain character unlock for free for few days for people to try out. If they like that character, they can go buy that character.
-the full package user will not be able to tell if you are playing from free version.
-there is no limitations for free version like "you can play XX number of games per day." sort of thing.
-the free version is for PS3 only at this moment. They are working hard to get it on Xbox360 as well, but they cannot promise it will come.

so what does this mean for merging of the two games? my brain is on murmur mode so i need this to be broken down for me. it seems like a big deal.

Based on that character select screen. Its pretty obvious that another VF character is coming.

Those random select boxes might be place holders.

The gist of everything:
-Download free version of DoA5U.
-Get Hayabusa, Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate for free.
-Can buy additional characters for 400 yen.
-DLC can be bought/transferred to free version.
-Character of the week periods where one character becomes free to play.
-Free version allows all costumes, stages, online and offline modes - except story - to be playable.

According to the interview, in the original DOA5 it was a toss up between Jacky and Pai on who would be brought in. Pai won out due to popularity.

In Ultimate, Jacky was brought in not simply due to his iconic status, but also because they wanted a character for players who've never played DOA5 before. They're hoping that Jacky attracts players who are new to DOA5 and/or fighters.

Momiji is being designed similar to the Ninjas but with unique quirks that are different from the traditional ninjas. Mainly, they're talking about her double-jump. And her Hayabusa-style Aiki ju-jitsu. They intend for her to be easy to get into/beginner friendly.

The new characters were largely selected from fan requests. A lot of players wanted Ein to return and they wanted Momiji in the game (no mention of Leon or anyone else), so that's why they're in Ultimate.

EDIT: Should mention that, according to the interview, AM2 was corresponding with Team Ninja on the development of Jacky for Ultimate. So it sounds like he'll be a bit more faithful to his move properties in DOA5.

Seeing as the related characters tend to be grouped vertically, it's most likely that the slot in the center is Leon's. This most likely leads to the as of yet unannounced female character being in the lower right slot, also indicating that it's not a VF character.

They've been doing that for the VF characters since Vanilla DOA5. That's why Sarah is as good as she is since her frame data beats out almost everyone elses, since it's closer to her VF5 frame data.

I think people shouldn't get too ahead of themselves, the 14th bikini could just an alt for Momiji since she'll probably have zero in the base game and needs to catch up. In other words Tengu's not out of it just yet
