Ganondorf seems to be a render rather than a concept art like Zelda, Link, Sheik.
Shulk's in game render doesn't bear much resemblance to his Xenoblade self. Plus, the punch animation seems odd.
Character select has no names, just icons. It's also badly organized. Wouldn't Mii Fighters be a part of the select as well?
None of the characters seem far fetched to me. Anything could work. Just seems weird

2) all nintendo characters along with guest characters in one game.

^ This but instead of Mario just use any old Nintendo character.
The casual focus helps, even though there is a competitive scene you'll find more people playing it for easy funtimes. Just works. A really successful marketing campaign doesn't hurt either.
