Just thought I'd introduce myself

Recently I've been on kind of a shopping spree for a new fighting game and while I have a soft spot for Mortal Kombat, I was getting kind of tired of the online in that game and needed a break. Too many people spamming the same characters. I'd have to say I'm having mixed feelings about this game. It just seems a lot harder than some of the others I've played, but it's starting to grow on me. I've had it for about 2 days now and I just love the Character Customization mode. That's the main reason I got it. I already made Rydia from Final Fantasy 4, and Rikku from Final Fantasy X-2. I'm also working on Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7. There's just so many possibilities it's insane. My only problem is I'm getting totally creamed by the CPU even on Normal mode, but that's just an incentive to keep practicing. I haven't even used but a couple of the regular characters and that was just so I could get their equipment after beating story mode. So far this is probably one of the best fighting games I've played in a while. I just hope they keep the character customization in SCV because that really adds replay value to the game.

My advice would be to first learn some defence - button mashing and being overly agressive without good reason will get you killed by pretty much anyone. Who do you play?
Welcome to 8way btw =)

@synraii I'm using my Rydia character with Ivy's skill set. She's still kind of a work in progress, but I got her pretty close to the real thing.

Choose Ivy and Talim, but focus on Ivy first. She has long ranges and short ranges when she utilizes her weapon.

I've pretty much stayed with Ivy as a main. I haven't decided on a backup though. It kind of helps having at least two other main's especially for the Tower of Lost Souls. I did a couple floors so far just to check it out, but I think I'm going to need a bit more training first. Maybe I'll try out Talim for a while. I'll probably do a custom character as a backup once they're finished.

Talim is one of the worst characters, you say you like Yoshimitsu so i'd go for him, but maining Ivy.

Now lemme say I play Zasalamel, and he's in the same boat as Talim, Theyre really fun to play but are really quite bad. I'd recommend Ivy as a main, Yoshi to back it up, then maybe pickup Talim after you have a good knowledge of your other 2.

Also at some point in time, Hilde is really fun to play, but banned in all tournaments(any that matter anyways) and people kinda rage when you use her online, but fun to play nonetheless :)

Also welcome to 8WR, have you any questions gimme a pm and I can referr you to someone with the correct knowledge :P

Hi, welcome to 8wayrun. Well first a few questions:

What do you want out of the game?
Is your focus casual single player or to be competitive multiplayer (even if it's only amongst friends and online)?
What other fighting games have you played?
What do you want from a character?

This game certainly has a lot of depth, but it can all be learned in phases so never try to learn it all at once. The character you picked, Ivy, is one of the most complex characters in the game but one of the best as well, thankfully though a real easy way i suggest picking the character up is just use sword stance until you are comfortable and learn the others. This stance has an easy learning curve and is very solid. Learn each stance like a character and then merge them. Don't be discouraged if you can't land the throws for awhile, they take time. But there's a ton of info in the Ivy forums thanks to very dedicated Ivy players who still respond so we can help you in specifics there.

When learning the game get used to the concept of 'frame advantage'. As a general rule when you block you usually recover quicker and so it's your turn to attack. This is not always the case, but a lot of new people don't know when to block and when to attack so i really hope that tidbit helps. But I highly suggest looking into what frame data is (we have this stuff stickied!), this will give you insight to what is goin on in this game and how to start learning why to use certain moves beyond the obvious.

The best way to learn is against offline play. A computer cannot be trained to make mistakes that you set up and will automatically counter things so it eliminates the mind game aspect that fighting games thrive on. Single player is mainly for the fluff and unlocks, don't feel it's a marker of skill you need to surpass. Online can get you some practice but be weary as many players abuse lag to do well and can be misleading on what is actually good play. Also be aware that Special Mode (where your equip stats and abilities are on) is regarded as a fun mode, not to be taken seriously.

Partisan has some great videos to check out as well for beginners! Youtube them or find them on here.

IF's response is pretty much spot on. The only thing i'd say is, try and perhaps begin with a less difficult to use character, maybe Cassandra or Sophitia I would personally suggest. Other than that, as everyone else has already said, or will say, welcome!

hmm... Cassandra is harder to pick up than a lot of people think IMHO - Asta and Sophie are the two friendliest for beginners in my humble opinion.
