Soulcalibur: Balanced or Not?

A favorite character? In soul calibur?

It's actually a tie between Setsuka and Rock at the moment.

All the others are mid/high tier whores exceptional characters in their own right however I do not feel as attached to them as the two I named.

In the US: Ramon, Mick, S-U, MTFighter, I could go on.
In the EU: Keysona, Pantocrator, Kayane, Belial, Jag, Saitoh, Kira, Keev, Belial I could go on.

So these guys aren't amazing?
Didn't say they weren't...but our Ivy's might just be more amazing-er. :P

we have something in common I also love setsuka I'm a noob with but I'm actually trying to learn her. I am a nightmare, cervantes and Zas guy but sestuska is my favorite woman in the game all the other are just plain to me

Hahaha Touche'

I'll give you that one. I am a noob with setsuka and I honestly like her because she has a nice chest size that isn't silicone (Ivy).

However I'm still learning rock and making good progress with him. A NM/Cerv/Zas guy? Are you serious? NM is a potential RO whore, Zas is just bad, And Cerv is...Actually I like seeing a Pro Cerv player in action. It's pretty fun.

And yes Set is the best female out there.
A.) She requires timing and actual practice (Not learning JF 236B like every Soph player)
B.) Her revenge story is more believable than any female's background style (Except Ivy, her story is pretty cool)
C.) She's fun to fight against.
D.) SHE HAS AN UMBRELLA!

i don't know but the umbrella and the revenge story make me lover her so much, but I'm surprised they haven't announced her yet she's kind of Mitsu's rival anyway glad were on good terms :P

I disagree. Hsien-ko without Hyper-armor assist is fairly underpowered along with Felicia, MODOK, etc. MvC3 tournaments are dominated by Wesker, Doom, Magneto, Wolverine, Dormmamu, and sometimes She-hulk. The game also has an absurd amount of Chip damage compared to any 2d Fighting game which makes zoning terribly good.

Your missing a few such as Zero, Dante, Spencer, Akuma, Taskmaster, and Ammy, but even so there's other characters that play niche roles like I said. Meaning while your team may use Wesker and Doom, your 3rd might be an obscure character with a specific purpose. Hsien-Ko isn't great on point...but as an assist she is amazing and to some teams that might be all you need, same as Tron and Haggar.

Really there's only a VERY FEW amount of characters that struggle to find a team and that would be MODOK, Joe, Captain, Thor, and Ryu...and some of those have been good in the right hands, we just don't see it often. Tiers are awkward in MvC because the team element plays such a heavy role on the effectiveness of a character. You could have a character be a monster with the right team and then become free the second it falls apart depending on the match up.

Some characters simply need to rely on gimik and as long as they have it they're golden. Morrigan and Felicia can have a hard time winning but they have obscure things that when in the right team makes them very powerful.

You only see the top characters because they're straight forward...and really the top characters are like 1/3 rd roster and dont always make up the full team.

Ah the infamous tron assist. Cheap to use, too bad she's been nerfed terribly from MvC2 to MvC3. Most Teams with Wesker or Doom rely on those core 2 (Primarily Wesker's OTG Assist for characters who lack one.). And most teams are centered around the two (Or magneto.) In tournament level obscure assist are rarely used for the reason solely being they suck by theirselves. If you're team is Task, Doom, Morrigan. And You use morrigan for her Meter assist once I take out Doom and Task the game is set and match.

You forgot: Jill, Chris, and Spencer. But yeah You're pretty much right. The tiers in MvC3 are determined primarily by several factors being Assist and if they have OTG moves. (Hence why Wesker is so high tier along with his teleport mix-ups and great amount of life). Match-ups aren't really anything special unless you're running a team without Doom or Mag since nearly every team focuses on either one of them (Or Dormmamu).

Such as? The only thing I can even remotely think about for Morrigan is Level 3 X-Factor with Mirror Hyper. Felicia is just plain bad just like X-23. If Felicia is your last character you might as well just give up. Her Helper Hyper combo won't do crap unless you're corner pressuring them with Cross-ups and Mix-ups. Even in a good team Felicia still has trouble with how useful her assist is.

True. Can't really argue with you there.

If I buy a fighting game and not take the time to observe the tiers and complain after, it's my own fault.

If I decide to main a low tier and complain that I'm constantly being beaten by highers, it's still my own fault.

Every character has tricks and gimmicks, but it is up to you whether you master it or not. It also matters if you learn the weaknesses of other characters. Someone posted about top players being the true players and why? Because they dedicated time to find as much tricks and gimmicks as they can to become a top player.

Until I become a top player, I can't explain to you about what is considered unbalanced or not in a detailed matter, hell if you ask me, it's all just opinions.

Do some research, practice and you will forget about the balancing soon enough.

I'm really hoping you aren't saying that those characters play anywhere near like each other. I mean...really.

The only ones excused would be Lizard/Soph/Cass and Seong/Kilik and Seig/NM.

Ast and Rock play near exactly with the exception of Asty having much better moves and air grabs over ground grabs. Nobody can Deny Seong and Kilik play similar to each other. Except Kilik is much better.

Killing words: It does not matter what a group thinks or not. Some think one game is balanced and the other disagree. But here is something you need to remember:

IT HAS NOT COME OUT YET.

Maybe it is, maybe it is not, who cares right now. It matters not who you are (skilled or not) balance is a subjective term that differs from person to person and now is not the time to talk about it, wait about 3 months after release.

No, no, no. Rock's game is entirely based around 50/50's; Ast has more spacing tools and has a grab mixup game but it's primarily based around playing the edge and ring control; Kilik is a counterhit/evasive/defensive based character; and Mina is a Counterhit/Spacing/defensive based character. It's more like you just grabbed characters with similar types of weapons than actually analyzed the way they play.

Well back to the Captain America thing. He is bad, but with the help of Sent assist, he can now do incredible cross ups with by rolling thru the opponent repeatedly for all 3 hits. X-23 can be used in a few ways, you can battery and keep doing repeated lvl 3 set ups (I have toyed with the idea of X-23/morrigan but gave up under how awkward morrigan was for me) or you can do nasty pressure and use her like a poor man's wolverine with her cross up+assist with the added benefit of DHC glitch. Jill's Gun hyper is misleading awesome. Despite low damage, it OTGs, has INSANELY long and fast invincibility, and can cross up for some awkward DHC set ups.

Sometimes they can have other benefits such as DHC shenanigans as mentioned. I particularly like storm as a DHC since if I whiff my Taskmaster arrow hyper, I can always DHC to Storm's Hailstorm to punish any attempts to punish him and I will win against nearly anything in the game. Sometimes you may need an assist punish and having a beam hyper like Akuma or Ryu means you can burn 2 meter DHCing to hopefully punish an assist. Spencer for example means I have to be very careful to not try to zone my opponent with projectiles and leave an opening to DHC bionic arm.

There's just so much, no character is purely useless. Even the bad one's sometimes make a fundamental piece of a team.

To elaborate on what LostProvidence said, Rock's approach is fundamentally opposite to Astaroth. Astaroth's movelist is primarily designed to keep the opponent away and fight them at a range. Rock's is just the opposite. Rock wants to stay right in the opponent's face micing them up with grabs, KND's and ground throws. If you try to play Rock as a poor man's Astaroth, you're gonna struggle. You should drop by Rock's soul arena sometime. I'm sure myself and a few others would be more than happy to break down his game in detail there.
