[New England] Booze + Puritan Values

Okay, so Jian and I went out to GamePlayUSA last night to talk to Tom, however we arrived shortly after he had left. We spoke to another associate named Jake, who was very cool and friendly. We asked him about being able to bring in our own monitors and setups, and he was totally open to accommodate us. He said it was actually quite common for people to do it (apparently they let Smash players do it all the time), so that doesn't seem to be any problem. He also mentioned the store had around 5-7 tube TV's of their own as well. Also, the venue is quite large, plenty enough space for a major 25-50 man tournament.

We still have to go back out there again to actually talk to Tom, and we need to find out about venue fee's and ask if the store has WiFi (I assume they do, but I forgot to ask) so we can bring laptops to run our tourneys/get online. Idle, Jian and I are willing to make a trip out there when you are free and able. Let us know what works for you.

Seeing as how SCV releases the 31st, and BONE and WinterBrawl are both in February (not to mention Valentines Day), I'm hoping to realistically have an event scheduled at GamePlayUSA sometime in early March. Hopefully that gives us plenty of time to hammer out the venue details, and for the community to recoup some funds so not everyone is broke come local tourney time. Of course, BONE will be the last Sunday of March, but another event earlier in the month should be feasible for everyone.

Kona - welcome to the boards man, love the enthusiasm. I'm looking forward to seeing how this TnT pizza shop venue will turn out.

Icy - not sure about FR yet myself, but we'll see.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Also, lemme ask you guys something. What is the primary system that you guys will be running SC5 on? Lately, the 2D fighter community has been playing on 360 for tournaments in the New England area. Is there a universally accepted console that's agreed upon or does it matter? I'm mainly asking because everyone I know plays on Xbox (except for Jian) and if we get people to show up to TNT Pizza, we'd like for you to be prepared. However, I do have a PS3 and would be willing to contribute to casuals.

Just a heads up guys, I figured since Ryan works at GU now, and because of some unfortunate things that happened yesterday, I'm handing off running BONE to him. Given the worries about a ruleset at the moment, I think it's best that we maybe not have it so early as well, but it's his show now, his call.

Fox, sorry about yesterday. I hope Jian explained the circumstance well enough. I'll be down there soon enough to check it out.

I just can't wait to start playing with you guys again, new and old. This game feels really good.

-Idle

Idle - yeah, sorry to hear you're running into problems. That sucks buddy, I hope you can get squared away in short order. Just let either Jian or myself know when is good to meet up in Springfield.

Nightblade - well, if you're running the show now, just let me know if you need anything. I'll be more than happy to bring my laptop and help run brackets/live tweet the tournaments. Don't be shy, I'm always willing to lend a hand. Also, as far as having BONE on Feb. 12th, I agree with Idle that perhaps a bit more time to nail down a universal ruleset for SCV might be beneficial. I suggest perhaps February 26th (the last Sun. of the month, when we usually run BONE anyway), but if you still want to hold it on the 12th, I'll certainly show up.

Kona - yes, as Nightblade said, PS3 is the community agreed upon console standard for Soul Calibur.

No, I agree with you DS. Having BONE in anticipation of Winter Brawl sounds nice, definitely, but we need time to see where this Devil Jin discussion is going, along with some other issues. As of right now, I am not in favor of DJ CaS, both because of inability to obtain a fair CaS standard and maintain it, and the fact that even if we did create some sort of universal save file for tournaments, it would overwrite the current save. So, if people brought setups to the tourneys, say goodbye to all your save data unless you make a new profile entirely.

Obtaining and maintaining the aforementioned CaS standard would also require TO's such as ourselves to check each DJ customization for every single system, every single tournament, to make sure that standard is up to snuff. AND we'd have to watch the character selection to make certain people don't pick an almost identical tweaked version of the CaS style. Hit box issues are going to be a big problem if this stuff is allowed, and Jaxel doesn't seem to see that at the moment, so I'm not sure where this argument is going to go.

That last piece was just to let everyone why we're waiting so long for the first BONE to take place. We'll still be holding casuals like mad, and I'll even hold $1 tournaments at Fight Night if people are down to make some gas money.

I know this may sound scandalous, but if the community decides to allow CaS/DJ bullshit into tournaments, what do you guys think about not abiding those rules? I personally hate CaS, console exclusives, and "boss" characters (Algol, Abyss, etc.) and think they should all be banned. I really want to play and enjoy SCV as much as possible, and I'd hate for some in the New England region to be turned off/disenchanted by the "rules" the community decides to establish. Hell, it wasnt until after I stopped playing SCIV competitively that the community finally banned Hilde's bullshit, and that was AFTER NEC and Nationals. I don't want to see our community suffer because a bunch of fanboys want to play as DevilJin. If you want to play as DevilJin so bad, why not just play Tekken?

EDIT - just so no one misconstrues what I mean, I'm really talking about instituting a soft ban on CaS/DJ, and that's only IF the community decides to allow CaS/DJ. Sure, we'll have to abide by the community standard rules if we hope to maintain legitimacy as a region, but it doesn't mean we can't ask players NOT to use CaS/DJ (i.e. a "soft ban")

I don't mind the idea, but I definitely need to see it in action before I can make a call. I wish either the community banned him, or Namco patched in a legit character skin so we wouldn't have to deal with this shit. I'm also hearing reports from France that the DJ CaS is incredibly broken. 60%+ combos for one BE. That's Tekken shit that I don't want touching this game. I personally thought this would be a no-brainer for the Calibur community. Create-a-Soul has ALWAYS been banned. I don't really see why it's changing now.

Apparently Jaxel said he will come to some sort of final decision on DJ sometime this weekend; however...if DJ is ANYTHING like Heihachi was in SC2 (if i remember correctly), i.e easy as pie inputs for wave dashing/ewgf's along with brain dead mix-up transitions from wave dashes, it should be a no-brainer, the character was never designed for playing at high levels or being able to do WD's with your head turned the other direction and just throw something out, simply put it was never meant to be that easy/simple to obtain, aside from that it was a "shits n' giggles" move on Namcos part when he was put in the game as console specific, of course this is all mere speculation on my part (to a degree)

EDIT: ok it is said that the normal version is more balanced out, we should still give it time to test out as a community.

....and i just learned that its CaS legality debate, ok, sorry for the confusion.

Idle, sounds like you got it already, eh?

Hey everyone, I know a lot of you have no idea who I am but I've been interested in getting more competitive with this recent addition of SC. I remember posting here about 3 years ago hoping to become more competitive but I just never got around to it. I'm older now (18), so I think I will just take the plunge this time. I look forward to maybe playing against some of you. It's fortunate that the PS3 is the main system people play on. Anyway, I'm not going to back out this time around.

The truth is, it's gonna get worse before it gets better. The "solution" that will be put forth by Jaxel has already been dispelled, but the problem is he opens the door to division. Like always, I advocate we do our own thing here in New England, but one of the reasons I took this out of my own hands is I'd rather have someone else have to make that hard choice for once. SC4 drained me of the will to do that for another game.

In short: I just want to play.

Jake is actually the manager/owner of GamePlay, I know him pretty well as I used to work right there in the mall and the mall is also 5 minutes from my house. He has always been accommodating and has wanted to bring in the fighting game crowd so i'm not surprised at the warm reception he gave you. The issue has always been that he is more accustomed to running FPS tourneys which they get huge turnouts for rather than fighting game tourneys. I've always offered to help but because of school and work I can't be reliable with that type of thing. I'm all for GamePlay as a location for gatherings not only because it is close but because it would drum up business for Jake who is a good guy.

Better late than never: I am going to Winter Brawl for sure, I booked my room weeks ago, gonna be driving down. Also, I will be holding a $1 Street Fighter tournament in my room, if anyone's interested. It went over well at NEC.

Still trying to figure out whether or not I should enter the SCV tournament though.

Alright, so it seems like Ivan got everything setup for TNT Pizza. We will be running this on Wednesdays. Our first day will be on February 1st (the day after SC5 launch). $5 venue. Since it's a pizza place, you can buy pizza and drinks there. If you're over 21, you can also buy beer there as well. I'm 99% sure there's no outside food allowed so be considerate. However, if you're not feeling up to pizza, there are other fast food joints close to the venue. They start at 4PM and are willing to stay open until 2AM. We will also have UMvC3, AE2012, MK9, and KOF13. I understand that PS3 is the agreed system but since most of us in Western MA play on Xbox, most of our setups will be on Xbox. I can provide 1 PS3 (my own), but I will not have a copy of a the game so if you can bring a copy or bring your own setup, that would be most helpful. The address is 548 South Street, Holyoke, MA 01040. I hope you guys can make it!

Hey everyone. I live in Vermont. (Saint Johnsbury, to be exact) Any other players in VT or NH near the VT border? Would love to get a community going in the area.

Also, I work at Goddard College in Plainfield and have been contemplating the idea of running events there, but it would help to have interest built-up first. I used to run monthly tournaments (for multiple games) in Long Island, NY which really helped bring that community to life. I am hoping to do something like that for this area. (well, for all of VT actually.)

On a side note, I hope you guys keep those events running at TNT Pizza. Maybe I can make it down to one next time I have a Wednesday and Thursday off.

welcome all new blood and welcome older school players.

are we waiting till SCV release for a BONE thread? want me to make one Jay/Ryan?

Jay which side are you on? i noticed that you are no longer an ADMIN, im guessing its for drama-laced reasons..perhaps related to Harada/DJ? lol. with that said welcome back as a player.

unfortunately i work every wednesday so i will be unable to attend TNT Pizza sessions.

For BONE, Ryan and I talked about pushing it back from the 12th to the last Sunday in Feb. so we can see how the rules shake out.

My position on DJ is he should be banned unless he gets a dedicated skin of his own, because otherwise he is a CaS character with a unique movelist, with all the problems inherent in that. However, I think we should go with the community rules regardless of if we don't like them because being divisive helps nobody, even if we feel the rules are wrong. Ultimately though, it's Ryan's decision now.

For a more in depth look at my opposition to his legality, check this post: http://8wayrun.com/threads/demon-souls-soul-of-devil-jin-general-discussion.9742/page-2#post-377275

I chose to stop being Admin of my own volition because If we have more BS rules debates to look forward to, I don't want to participate in that nonsense. SC5 is great, and as I said before, I just want to enjoy it, as a player.

I'm all for Tue/Fri 1$ tourneys and will try and make it out to west MA at LEAST twice a month for events/sessions as long as hopefully the same mentality can be given in return. Strong scene!

I suppose I might as well do this now, since I never bothered to before:

Hello, all! I'm Benji, and I live in Mass. I'm a big SoulCalibur fan, since it's the series that got me interested in fighting games in the first place. SC2 holds a spot as one of my top 5 games ever, and was the first SC I played. I picked up a 360 so that I could play SC4 with friends 3 years ago, and just this month bought a PS2 and a copy of SC3.

I'd really like to get involved with my local scene, and so far I've found this site to be the most welcoming online community I've ever been a part of.

I'm greatly looking forward to meeting and playing y'all in local events :D

There's gonna be so much new blood. I'm hyped for so many reasons. Hopefully rides won't be much of an issue. I was talking to someone and there was a store in Johnston RI. I just can't remember if it is still around. I think it was mostly FPS, but you never know.

Yo, sorry I haven't been active here lately. Just been getting my ass kicked with a lot of things. However, Feb 3 - 5 is gonna be a kick ass convention in Warwick RI, called templecon, more importantly there will be a lan room with SCV as well as SSF4 Ae and UMVC3 and some Neo geo machines. You guys should definitely take a look and if your free that weekend come and join.
