Standard Controller Vs Arcade Stick - What's Your Take On This Matter?

Well, franman, my post that you quoted is a little outdated. HORI has started to step their game up by making the VLX and such. While I think the VLX is a bit overpriced, the one you've gotten seems to be the best value of all joysticks on the market. You did good.

I have never tried the stick so I'm going for standard. Want to try a stick someday though:)

Ya I noticed that that's why I begin with "I know this is long time ago but..."

Ya about my stick it seems to be the one lots of ppl are going after they HORI store keeps running out of those until a next batch of them comes out.

This is where it all started for me

I didn't really grow up in the age of the arcade fighter, nor have I ever really played any arcade fighters, so when it comes to me using a fighting stick, I find it to be a bit awkward. I've tried it a few times, and it just ain't my thing. I'm pretty comfortable with the standard PS3 controller (the Sony ones only - they're just so much easier to hold and less cumbersome), and I actually find it a lot easier to play using the D-Pad as opposed to Analog.

For certain moves like Mitsurugi's... 63214+B B, I think it would be, the analog is the best option yeah, but as far as actual movement, combat and the like, the D-Pad is more reliable for me and I'm less likely to accidentally move in the wrong direction. So it's controller all the way, for me.

I know the game isn't out yet but for the people that have been playing SCV in the demonstrations and what not has it been controller or stick? With the information currently known do you feel as if a stick or a controller fits SCV better so far?

I'm trying to decide whether I want to pick up a stick for SCV or whether I want to stick with PS3 controller but aside from going to the arcades many years ago when I was younger I don't really have any idea how to use a stick. I have been saving up for one mind you so it merely comes down to the argument of which feels better for SCV.

I should probably just wait until after I've managed to test the game out with the PS3 controller but I'm not sure if the sticks sell out quickly. hmm..

I've been playing Soul Calibur exclusively on a controller for many years. SC on the Dreamcast, SC2 on the GameCube, Soul Edge, Calibur 3 and Calibur 4 all on Playstation systems.

I also have a stick on which I played SC4 on for a while.

For me the Playstation controller is just the way to go with Soul Calibur. The stick never felt right.

I started out as a pad player but I have tendinitis, and arcade sticks are easier on my hands, so that's what I use. *shrug*

I gotta go with stick on this its just feel so natural to use one in FGs now i cant even use pad anymore its so uncomfortable for me now

I use a stick because I have gigantic flipper-hands and trying to press out combos on a dinky X360 controller will make me arthritic by the time I turn 27.

This should help you decide, OMGTangerines:

Short answer would probably be the Madcatz SE - any style, but take a look at that link and consider the options.

Thanks! Though I probably won't get a stick until summer where I can get an actual job and get some cash, unfortunately. I was kind of expecting them to be 10$ to 20$ (they're just sticks.. right?) But I suppose I'll have to fork over fifty dollars lol

On topic, the SC series can be played better on the pad. It's a fact that's been proven at practically every major tournament. The fact that you can map any combination of buttons to it totally removes the factor of the user messing up moves that require multiple buttons to be pressed at the same time. Nobody is perfect, but with the controller, you only have a chance to mess up with the directional input. And like it was said in a previous post, SC isn't a game that requires much input from directionals. You also have the benefit of the control pad not making noises when you're doing an input, so you have a certain element of surprise that you can't achieve when using a joystick. The clicking sounds from a joystick are used by your opponent to tell if you're about to do something.
If you're like me though, you can use that to trick them at times. At my age, I tend to rely more on mind games than reaction times. So it helps.

Am I missing something here? How is being able to map buttons on a pad better than a stick? You can map stick buttons aswell in any combination possible and they are easier to press + in a better position to reach.
