I'm posting this to get input from the people who care about the 8WR online tournaments.

Let's be honest, last month's tournaments, which showed such huge potential, turned out to be a big mess with people dropping out and not doing their matches. Please let me know your opinions on why that was, but I think the problem was we tried to go too big this time. There's only so much hype to go around and so much that players can actually focus on, and having such a long tournament and the side tournaments just sapped everyone's enthusiasm for any one single tournament.

For next month I plan to scale back. Certainly no Swiss tournaments, and probably a smaller player pool for the DE tournaments. I'm also considering possibly changing to single elimination. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on that. The benefit would be that we could (oh wow) actually get it done in one month, and peoples' attentions spans wouldn't be taxed, the down side is, of course, that players might get discouraged after losing only one match and being knocked out.

Another option to keep people enthusiastic about the thing is to offer prizes. I probably could do something, but I do have 2 kids to feed, and I'm such a tightwad too. :P But I'll look into it. Or I could put the burden of prizes on the entrants and charge a fee to enter, then hand out the money to the winners, like 70/20/10, or 80/20, or 70/30 That would keep people interested til the end, but it would discourage lower level players from entering and it would just end up being a Xeph/Partisan/Enkindu-fest, which isn't necessarily all-bad, but I want these tournaments to be fun and accessible to all SC players, so I don't think I want to do that.

Please let me know what you all think. Sign-ups for whatever we end up doing next month will be going up soon, so watch the stickies.

I really don't want to put money into an online tournament or see someone from here do so. Dunno if it'd be possible to draw a sponsor, but that's the only way I'd be comfortable with a $$ prize.

Yeah, I just threw that out there just as kinda thinking out loud. I don't like the idea myself either. Aside from the obvious problems, I have no clue about the legal issues involved in having entry fees and cash prizes for a tournament that crosses state lines and probably national borders. It would bring up a lot of problems and potential problems I don't want to deal with, that option is out for sure.

But what about the other stuff? Especially thoughts on single vs. double elimination.

I think this last tourney had a few issues.

#1...With MLG and other majors that were happening during that whole thing. It encouraged the people going to those to drop out due to training purposes. Nothing really more to say on that.

#2...The whole swiss tourney thing was just a cluster fuck. Multiple people signing up on not only the for both DE and the swiss tournies, but on both platforms as well.

Kill the swiss shit. Only allow people to sign up for 1 console. Drop it to a 16 man tournie.
Still keep it DE tho. Even a 32 would be fine. But I think the swiss thing just added to much to handle.

DONE

HRD is right, with this being offline tournament season it's much more difficult for people to take online serious when they have to prepare for majors. Also having so many people in the tournament really slows things down as there are just too many matches to try and manage.

Heres the other deal. EVO is july 4th weekend. I would STRONGLY advise to start the next tourney.....AFTER EVO. That way the offline season will be done and there arent any majors pending after that. (at least i dont think there is)

If I recall correctly there is still REV and DEV on the west coast. REV being in Los Angeles and DEV being in Phoenix, AZ.

Oh snap. But dev is in october i think and i dont know when rev is.

I think theres a big enouh gap between evo and those i reckon

I was one of the people that dropped out, sorry. I started concentrating more on offline play. I think there might bee more interest after EVO is over.

I don't care if there's a tourney the next day. I'll sign up and do my matches regardless of what happens. Hell I even worked a 12 hour shift, got home tired, and was still online on time to do my MATCHES (Swiss and DE).

I'd say to drop SWISS, and do the DE instead only and if you want to cap it, I think 24 is a good number.

Whenever you post the next sign-ups, I'll automatically be waiting for my yes on the PSN side.

I won't be participating in anymore online tournaments unless they are split into east/west. Being thrown into 'competitive' matches against several people 3K miles away killed my desire to participate.

I agree, draw a line down the center of the continent and split it into two smaller tournies for both consoles. Then if the winners of each side have an acceptable connection with each other, they can square off as well.

as far as the swiss tourney goes. I got 4 words Wandrain whos idea it was...... I told you so!!
Idlemind actually suggested it first. Wandrian was just a big proponent. I thought it was a good idea too at first.

Does everybody want to split into east and west? I'm just concerned splitting up the competition will kill hype, just like splitting people up between DE and swiss did.

Even though i actually agree with oof and kav, i think that if you were to do that, we all would be looking at this for more than its worth. These online tournies are to keep hype going for the game. When you boil it down these things arent any real test of skill, they are meaningless in terms of who the best player is. Everyone should have the mentality that these are for lolz. Having a good tome with a couple of buddies, talkin a little shit and stirring things up a bit.

I got paired off with DIME my last time at bat. Hes in FL im in CA. Honestly the connection was not ideal. But after i wiped all the vasoline from my ass, i laughed my ass off and walked away satisfied.

So wrap up a rambling old mans mind. Lets see the forest for the trees yo. Do it cause you enjoy playing SC, and you want some bragging rights.

EDIT: oh yea that was Idleminds fault. My bad. That dirty rat.

Single elim I say. Purely because I takes FOREVER for a couple of games to happen in these tournaments, nevermind two full brackets, lol. This sort of thing should be started and finished over a weekend easily (including Friday evening), nevermind a month.

Also:
But after i wiped all the vasoline from my ass,
There are much better things to use than vaseline. Move into this century. Oh and I saw your new beard, nice! (I was being serious about your beard, I am not manly enough for one yet qq)
