Food for Thought: What the Soul Calibur series needs.

Moving on...I touched on this idea before, but i think a lot of people would dig it: RPG style world and your cas is the main character. Along the way you could learn from the main cast and other characters of their fighting style. Buy weapons, armor and unlockables. I think it would be great for a mode if they had the time and money to put in it.
That would be nice because I wouldn't have to hear from spoiled SC fans again. The casuals would be quiet for once. xD
no offense but the constant complaining about 1P modes in a fighting game gets annoying. FGs aren't designed for 1P so why do they expect alot of 1P modes? >.<

I know my ideas arent spoiled; I know I didn't post them & said "WE MUST HAVEE THIS NAOOO!!!, I DEMAND IIITT!". (Shielden myself from misunderstanding bull since 1993) But really though, I really do hope they make my ideas; As I stated before.

Who else here cares more about other parts of the game? We gotta try & make Online & Offline exciting because $30.00 for SCV at stores are just insane & not a good sign. I blame lack of story, offline, character making & deleting, & maybe online for this mistake.

(I'm guessing the ratings is 4. somethin, maybe)

I guess selling 1.3 million+ copies of a game is considered a "bad game"? hmmmmm.

All though I agree that this game was lacking in some areas, But I personally wouldnt consider this a horrible game at all. There are some great ideas from some people in this thread, and some rather retarded ones from others. Collectivly they make for a fine adjustment to the series.

*raises fist* heres hoping Namco actually does something about it and not let this series die.

Well, let's face it. The series itself isn't going to die after SCV, but either Namco or PS need to step it up a notch when it comes to that relationship between the two, because it's a little bit off. If it continues once more, then the series could potentially be dead.

I think Namco needs to step it up. So much determination that PS had only for it to be crushed into pieces. Not to mention Namco's prioritizing, and it was so obvious.

Welcome back, soul brother.

(This may be an opinion but, I also think this is a true opinion) I've always knew that what makes a game good is more modes & character creation.

For character creation or costumizing in any way shape or form in any game (Fighting most likely); no matter what, its always so damn great to have the ability to remake something into anything I want it to be. I truly do love creating characters (obviously, because I have over 200 in SC I think). & It's not just character creation (which is so important to many games), but to also costumize anything I use or wear.

(Other examples) In MW3, how great do you think it is to costumize your own class? How dull do you think the game would be if you couldn't? Perks would be w/e they give you & guns would be whatever handed out. Pretty gay, huh?

I've played DOA4, MK w/e, & I'm guessing Tekken & Street Fighter were all 4 games you could not costumize in. Soul Calibur is the only fighting game I have heard who has such an incredible ability. Being able to do something like that in any game brings better joy to gamers then it not being able to costumize at all. Surely we can agree to this.

As for modes, online is a must in fighting games. Offline modes are important aswell because it helps the balance between both online & offline to compensate against eachother for entertainment. If offline was dull & modes were bad, I'd most likely be online rather then offline, same goes for offline if it was the other way around. If the balance was perfect, I'd be all over both to whichever I crave.

To give a great example, Skyrim was one of those games that I thought was BS. Not to say the game sucks or anything else, but I felt pretty stupid after completing the story & finishing the Dark brotherhood, statues, the college, shield bros, Dawnguard, & anything else I missed. Because I stood in the middle of tamriel & said "what do I do now?" It's been too long since I've played Skyrim ever again.

I hope I don't have to say that in SCV when it has that ability to make modes special & online in some ways. SCIV had 4 modes (1 dumb one by the way), containing both online & offline. Now thats a pretty damn good job. If only it had something special about them both to maintain balance, how perfect would the game be to all?

That's what I think makes a great game. A balance between both online & offline with the ability to create in any way I please. & then rule all with my very own unique creations. Under these conditions, I don't see how a game could get any better. UNLESS someone is willing to elaborate on what they think makes a game good. It might help with some ideas to SC series. Also SC series could keep this post in there head while making games.

No one ever said it was a bad game. In fact, I never once said that. However, nothing changes the fact that it needs a good selling point and open dialouges.

I haven't read the pages before, but I'd say the only thing that can save this game now is either a balance patch (with new (old) characters) or a Super SC5. I hope that at least one will happen, or I'm afraid we will have to wait some more years for SC6.

Personally, I want to see another company pick up Project Soul and fund them like they deserve. It's clear that they had all the makings of a fantastic entry up until their budget ran out/got cut and they had to tie everything off and make do with what they had.

Just look at the storyline. Clearly, PS was going for the whole "continuum" approach to it. Actions would be done and undone through the chaotic transitions through time, while the protagonist tried to pursue his final goal.

Ideally, I would have liked to have seen several chapters dedicated to each character, after reaching a certain point in Patroklos's story. Something like a "branching point", where the player could select who to play, then eventually unlock the "true ending", somewhat similar to how BlazBlue did it.

With this we could tie off all the, "How did this person get here?" questions. Several chapters could involve the transition of power from Taki to Natsu, for instance. We could get a few chapters explaining what all went on with X and Kilik, and how Leixia's storyline fleshed out.

Since none of this is too likely now, I feel that rebooting from Soul Edge would be a viable option as well, provided they move the new meter system/guard crush systems over.

the story is a mess. Do what DC comics did and reboot the mythology... start from a clean slate. This way old characters like Taki, Zas and talim can come back but re-imagined. Take an all-out fantasy approach to the setting instead of the pseudo-historical tone the series has barely been able to maintain anyway.

Hire the writers from Dark souls!!!!

I hate to break this to you, but as a fighting game, there is no hope for it's story. Trying to rationalize fighting without a pre existing story is all but possible it seems. Even if you used the writers from dark souls, that style of story would not work at all.

The reason why the story for dark souls worked is because it was open world with many nooks and crannies. Using that for a fighting game like SC would be like using morgan freeman for an episode of family guy, pointless and wasted effort.

I am not saying it is entirely hopeless, but the chances of success in making a decent story (let alone good) are about 1 mill to 1.

you're making it sound like I'm asking for shakespeare. hiring decent writers would mostly serve the purpose of keeping the dialogue one level above "inane". As for plot, nothing too fancy, just a semblance of, you know, COHERENCE(was it ever really clear to anyone how nightmare came back to life?)

All of these are excellent ideas.

And again, that just does not seem possible. 1.) I am not saying you are looking for that level of writing, do not miss understand my words. 2.) you said use dark souls writers. Again, different kind of game. 3.) Coherency is non existent in fighting games. Look at Tekken, street fighter, mortal kombat, virtua fighter and DOA. Coherency i not a word I think anyone would use to describe those stories.

Yes, it could be better. But even coherency seems to be too much for a fighting game. It is trying to rationalize a battle, which is impossible. XD

Not one person is willing to elaborate on what they think makes a great game; sad, I really wanted to know what other people think what makes a great game too. It could of helped make us come to a conclusion of what we think should be in the series of SC for the future of SC. Maybe then, people would see to it that we've come to an understanding.

"impossible" is a ridiculously heavy word to use, dude. Especially since soul 1 and 2 had passable to decent stories. You mentioned MK which had a great story mode - it's no Moby Dick but it was lengthy, had you play majority of the cast, and dare I say it, coherent.

But we both agree that it could be better, so there's that.

How the mode was structured in MK9 was excellent. The story itself wasn't new, so to speak. It was based off of MK1-MK3, but it goes beyond text.

SC's story, as a fighting game, is original, but the whole "Soul Edge and Soul Calibur somehow manage to revive themselves" gets a little repetitive. How SCV's mode was structured was at the right path, but still incomplete, and most of the mode was centered on the Alexandra siblings.

Hire writers from Obsidian. Even the bad games they make have great stories. Just keep the gameplay under Project Soul's jurisdiction.
