The Great Player Vs Character Debate: SCV Edition

In SCV is it more about the PLAYER or the CHARACTER?

I always take into account that eventually I'll have to change up my playstyle based on the tools I'm provided. When I play Yoshimitsu, I always think about what move I should do and how my opponent react. This is subjective however for every character.

Call me delusional, but the minute I feel the character won't take me higher than what I sell myself for, I have to switch to a character that will. Right now atm, I feel I have lots to improve with Yoshimitsu and Leixia(secondary to help Yoshi's problems).

tl;dr. All in all, I'm just echoing Thuggish Pond's post. I care about my skill, my character, and my character match-up knowledge and how it affects my opponent. I like to keep it to the point and work my knowledge on how to beat my opponent. The main goal of a FG imho.

Screw it I'll post my opinion as well.

The way I see it first and foremost it's about the player. The better the player is at reacting to and reading the opponent obviously the better he's going to do with any character in the cast than his opponent.

But I believe that this game is for the most part balanced in a way that players of the same skill can pick whoever they want and do quite well with said character. By playing on the strengths of your character to a degree that makes them appear broken is what you should hope to achieve as a player of said character. But the fact that a player makes this character appear to be amazing doesn't mean that the character is the one winning the games.

But while I do think this game is balanced I do see certain match ups as being extremely hard to deal with. For example the Cervantes vs. Pyrrha match up. This is at least a 8:2 in Pyrrha's favor imo. So it's going to be much harder for a Cervantes player of similar level to a Pyrrha player to get wins. While this seems less so at lower levels of gameplay as you delve deeper into the metagame and get into the higher levels this tiny little matchup number starts to make a much larger difference.

TL;DR. What Idle said. 1% makes a huge difference in the long run.

Players all that matters, gents. Why do you think they made Edge Master? Its because it doesn't matter what weapon you use (Aka: Character), its how proficient you are.

Cervantes 2:8 Pyrrha

Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess. >_>

As a general musing:
I thought I'd seen it all when Shinjin started saying he truly believes Tira x Astaroth to be a 10:0 in Tira's favour. As opposed to just saying X player (in this case, Hyrul) is better than me. Just a hunch and I very well may be wrong but I think that the above post may be a similair case. Just a hunch mind you. :/

We can do the most "ULTIMATE GOD-LIKE LOGICAL DEBATE" ever in the history of 8wr right here, if thats what you want bub. Check this! take a Viola Player vs an Astaroth Player. Tell me, how did character mattered & player didn't if the Viola won or the Astaroth won. Don't forget the options of what a player can do such as: Dodge, GI, JG, Counter, w/e. We can place alot of "I could of done this" in this great debate of player vs character thing all we want. It'll only come down to my conclusion of what I said before which would be the truth.

We can do this DEX style! HEY! remember in Twitch where that Ezio guy spammed the shit out of them low kicks & the other guy was too retarded to not do a jumping vertical Atk? We can talk about that too if you like. Like I said, I can name limitless options of what to do against my opponet, which means that this whole godly debate will only end under my rule. & that rule would be that player is all that matters.

Dun debate DEX, he's too logical vs DEBATES!
(lol XD)

I'm officially confused now

Debates do intend to cause conflicts. After all, this is a debating thread.

Look, the entire argument you have hinges on "IN THEORY, I HAVE OPTIONS WHICH ARE ALWAYS APPLICABLE WHICH I COULD DO" also known as "theory fighting". The rest of us discussing thing are long past that train of thought, because that isn't how it works. You aren't debating. You are clinging to an idea which is fundamentally untrue.

While OOF may not have specified whether this was relevant to high level play or not for the sake of being inclusive, nice guy that he is, he also knows that there can be no certainty or point to the discussion unless you define a point of discussion.Read through the first page of posts. It very quickly centers on high-level play, and the discussion goes from those assumed variables.

Even if I were willing to accept that your position was logical (let's say for a moment that I do), I am also forced to acquiesce your "work" in getting to that conclusion is obviously not sound. Kind of like how a teacher makes you follow the train of logic in a problem and doesn't just accept the answer at face value.

So I ask you, please step back, read, ask questions, and understand- You are ignorant of that which you speak. I will not reply any further and spoiler-tag my posts otherwise. Merry Christmas.

Anyways, getting back on track:
It takes the player to make the character and the character to facilitate the reads of the player. They are equally important and integral to one another imo.
A good player using a bad character will struggle, just as a scrub can't just pick up a good character and be carried entirely by it (in this game at least). Recipe for success is a Top level player with character that has no weakness. Which you can even see today in Xeph. Phenomenally good player and using Pyrhha, not a god tier character but has great tools and covers all bases, no real weakness (inb4 Algol backstep) for the most part. Perfect combination.

He confuses everyone..there is no hope just let DEX be.
lol, I'll gladly retire from this debate if ppl let me be. I'll just stfu from here & just sit in my spectator chair as I blow a hand fan in my face gently with shades on. Watching this debate reveal more about "Player vs Character". To see what truth lies behinds the 8wr community.
