I'm new

Hiya, welcome to 8WR.

If you're just looking into the aesthetic side of the game for now, some galleries I recommend for inspiration/dropping your jaw on the floor to:

chobek
EnduringSoul
Gatsu
Matty82

If you ever feel like really learning the mechanics of the game, you're in luck since that's the main focus of this site :D

Check out this bunch of in-depth articles explaining the basics, it's pretty good. If you ever settle on a main, you can also click the character icons on the main forum index to go straight to character-specific subforums. Beyond that, if you have any questions or need any help just ask. Pretty much anyone will be happy to help you out.

I just got Soul Calibur 5 for Christmas, and I'm new to it so I'm still pretty bad at the game. I love the character creation a lot. I thought that once I figure out how to tranfer screen shots from Ps3 to computer, that I should out my creations online. So I decided to join.

Welcome to the SCV family! I hope you find a great niche here. Just like Wandrian posted, there's lots of support here for people that like to make use of SCV's character creation (CAS). Those people he posted all have fantastic designs. If you would like any help at all with the mechanics of the game and how it is played, please don't hesitate to ask!

If you're starting out with the game, I recommend Pyrrha as a good beginner and as a great starting point!

Welcome to 8wayrun!

Character creation is met with a lot of enthusiasm by a large portion of the members here, so you'll be right up their street.

Once you're happy with your creations, I'd do lots of training and play lots of arcade mode with them before you try fighting online. It's pretty rough out there for beginners. Don't get discouraged if you lose a lot at first, just stay focused on learning what works and what doesn't.

You can go to those CAS artist's galleries Wandrian posted. I will add they're extraordinary good to make you jealous, but there's also other artists that also deserve to have a spotlight. Here in the Link thread, you find some other CAS artists that made stuff and some cool other stuff. Granted, I also make CAS stuff but I'm not as great as the others. So I'm pretty much the unofficial secretary of 8wayrun CAS forums who organizes stuff the best way I can. That way, you can look for the thread that tickles your fancy better. Or you can always explore the forums like a voracious CAS artist if that's what you prefer.

As for the gameplay side I'll leave it up to you if you wanna learn SCV. For now, just worry about dressing up and finding your main. Hope to see you around.

Welcome to 8WayRun, here is a great place to try all the parts of Soul Calibur, if you are a CaS enthusiast it is ok, but any doubt about gameplay just visit the amazing Soul Arena where every member works hard to get better.
Anyway hope to see you around.

Thanks for all the replies, they're really helpful. I am also interested in the fighting. I have played as all characters, and so far the one I seem to be the best is Siegfried. Should I pick him as my "main"?

Well... only you can make that decision. Siegfried's controls aren't too demanding, but it takes a while to learn how to use his stances effectively. And since he's slower than most of the rest of the cast you have to try to keep fast attackers from getting too close and think carefully about what you're doing in general, since it can be hard to recover from just one mistake. It would definitely be worthwhile, but it might not pay off right away.

If you are still learning the basics I would highly recommend Pyrrha, Mitsurugi, and Patroklos.

Definitely Pyrrha or Patroklos, not Mitsurugi though -_-. He's too "easy to use & easy to win". At a low level he can give you a false sense of skill. At a higher level it doesn't matter as much however, but if you're learning the game, you want to actually feel like any wins you get were earned in a way. Pyrrha and Patroklos lay the foundation for gameplay much better without Mitsu's bullshit.

However, it's entirely up to what the OP wants. If she wants someone like Mitsu, let her use him. Anyone can say *insert character* is easy to win with and takes no skill, but that's not what a 8wayrunner should be saying, comrades.

We don't wanna break out all the stuff to confuse the OP, we want to let every OP make a decision, stick to it, and support them. Even if it means helping them learn a character we hate, we have to keep our opinions limited. That's precisely why I don't suggest something unless they commit to a decision.

Your enthusiasm to help is duly noted though. =)

Good news is that it seems like you're not the only person to get SCV for X-mas. That means you're way more likely to run into more new people to play with than we've had in the last six months or so. That may help the learning curve not feel so steep.

If the op likes playing siegfried thats all that matters. Play him!

I think siegfried makes a good beginner character because you can play him to a certain lvl without doing any of his JF's and it certainly is beneficial if you have to think about what you are doing in terms of learning the game.

Main who you enjoy the most, however as someone said above you might want to start with an easier character like pat, pyrrha, or Rugi (ignore that easy win low skill crap). In the end it's your choice who you play though :)

Edit: Welcome to 8wayrun!
