Someone on the Soulcalibur Reddit posted this screenshot claiming it’s been sent to various gaming publications insinuating it’s the final build.

My hope for Hwang and Aeon is dying rapidly. Inversely, my rage for the layout of the screen (empty slots) is increasing rapidly too.

Remember that this is the build that is on the disc. The possibility exists for a day one patch that adds Hwang and Lizardman to the two obvious slots.

Possibly. I was one of the believers at the beginning but I’m letting my expectations down by the day.

It occurs to me also that, if Hwang doesn’t make it, this will be the first game where Seong Mi-Na is the only Korean on the roster, at least story-wise.

Day One patches have always been for last minute bug fixes though, not straight up adding characters. The only way a "Day One Patch" would unlock a character, is if they were paid DLC and they were just meant to unlock a character that's already on the disc. That's not the kind of scandal SCVI needs at the moment.

But what if there are bug fixes to be made with those two movesets, that they're 90-95% complete, but letting them be playable would be a problem? They fix the bugs and simultaneously unlock the characters. They may just be keeping us on edge.

I think it’s a bit of a reach. Not saying outright that it can’t happen, but I’m doubtful, If nothing more than I don’t see them being smart enough in their marketing strategy to hold Hwang back until this late before release. I’ve argued in the past about him being essentially a ‘new’ character requiring development from a scratch, but I see the most logical appearance of Hwang and Aeon in any gameplay (if at all) to be CaS creations with Xianghua and Sophitia’s styles. I would absolutely love for them to be part of the roster but in the par couple of weeks there have been little signs that are saying otherwise. And at the end of the day, if
I’m pessimistic and they do appear the. It will be amazing!

I don't want to believe this, not possible to let 2 empty ugly slots right in the middle of the main roster ! :'(
Exactly. The math on weapons works out that we have 22 characters, and Tira being included in that 22 doesn't seem likely if she is actually DLC, not in the base game. We've got 20 characters, not including Tira, there's two free slots, and filling them would give us 22 characters. I'm not sure what's not to understand about this.

Picture is most likely fake, just some doctored pic of existing build, or just another promo like the rest of what's already been released.

Yeah, the placement of those two blank slots looks tacky as hell. Bad move to design your roster to look so incomplete at launch.

It would be quite dumb, they would undoubtedly get lower scores from reviewers and pissed off fans/consumers. At least put it to the side.

Exactly. PR for this game has been incredibly messy, so if they could accidentally spoil Cervantes, why stop there and not have the actual Lizardman himself in gameplay already.

We haven't seen other characters' gameplay outside of official promos though, so it might be intentional to leak Cervantes lol.... or the videos are actually from ancient builds, meaning Cervantes was done a looooooooong time ago.

I’ll admit - this is the theory that is giving me the most hope at the moment. Fingers crossed!

But why would they be bonus characters? There's two free slots, so put Hwang left of Siegfried and Lizardman right of Taki. Bonus character implies that they'd be like SoulCalibur II Assassin and Lizardman who isn't Aeon, where they'd only have one weapon, but we have enough weapons to give both of them a full set. Inferno, if unlockable, can go in the middle, filling in the hole, as has been speculated at least a hundred times over, if not a thousand.

if there are more characters in the game playable, they will be mimic inferno or half-assed bonus like Hwang or Lizardman.

We know that story mode will have lots of generic CaS opponents so that could have "bonus" characters in it

We have 149 weapons confirmed. There could be more, but there certainly won't be less. There's no reason Hwang and Lizardman would be bonus only.

Hwang - 7
Siegfried - 7
Zasalamel - 7
Nightmare - 7
Azwel - 7
Xianghua - 7
Maxi - 7
Sophitia - 7
Astaroth - 7
Ivy - 7
Yoshimitsu - 7
Kilik - 7
Inferno - 0 or 1
Grøh - 7
Cervantes - 7
Talim - 7
Mitsurugi - 7
Geralt - 2 or 1
Taki - 7
Lizardman - 7
Seong Mi-na - 7
Raphael - 7
Voldo - 7
Total - 149

Is it really that hard to straddle the line between annoyingly defeatist pessimism and annoyingly candy-hearted optimism?

I for one think it's been incredible how uncertain things remain after all this time, and that there's still enough compelling evidence on both ends to maintain this debate that we've had. Every time something that could deal a finishing blow to the speculation seems to come about, there's still an essence of doubt about it. The cards that seemed to have the full roster were missing Yoshimitsu and Zasalamel, the CaS movesets that still have some space to scroll, the discordant placement of empty slots on the roster, the weapon count in the museum, the early Azwel leaks, etc. etc.

Maybe it's just this certainty--one way or another--that some of you have decided to possess which really annoys me.

No way CD Projekt Red would let Geralt get away with only have 1 or 2 weapons in a game where he's one of the main characters of the custom character story mode and one of the stages is a 1:1 copy of Kaer Morhen.

If this is true, then Azwel could easily be the one with limited weapon selection instead, since his "variations" would possibly be like Algol, with different colored auras, but the same weapons, or be like Abyss, and have no variations at all. I was just using Ezio as an example, since he also only had 2 weapons.

Each Soul Calibur III bonus characters had a full set of weapons... and we had 17 bonus characters in that game.

There isn't really anything that confirms or unconfirms a bonus slot. I wouldn't rule the bonus characters out since they all shared a slot in SCIII and SCIV.
