Stance abuse vs. mind games?

I realize that stance abuse and mind games go hand in hand, but let's try to separate the two to get a better grasp of what I'm talking about. I've seen many Yoshi players online abuse the hell out of his stances, but I seldom see his cancels/mind games. I've been using Yoshi a lot lately, and I'm trying to use him closer to that of a Mitsurugi I suppose.

I seldom see anyone throw out a 22_44_88B+K:G, or a 22_44_88B+K:2B+K, and the options therein in. As well as 8WR A+B, throwing in the G into a throw, or the 2B for a low hit.

Is there a reason why I don't see many play this way? (unsafe, etc.)

or are people just too infatuated with his many stances?

I do 8WR A+B, G, A+G_B+G sometimes. Other than that, once your opponent sees you doing it, they'll attack you during the cancel next time. At least, that's my experience. It's risky, but it might work here and there.

his stances are his mindgames. that explains why u see them being abused so much.

Well there are many reasons for this. You're online for one, and the other could be that you just play with mediocre players. I don't mean to be an ass, but you lead me to this conclusion based on your generalization of Yoshi players as not utilizing cancels and abusing stances. People DO use his cancels. I throw 44B+K(2)B+K(MED/FLE) into DGF etc.. off a:B+K all the time. In fact, 66B no longer being a guaranteed follow up for a:B+K freed him up for the better as you can now keep the advantage you have off a:B+K. Most of his stances are meant for Okizemi/wake-up anyway so if you see anyone going in and out of stances constantly with out conditioning the opponent to guard or freeze up then they are simply asking for punishment.

Everything about Yoshi involves mind games. With how shitty his BT and WS game is, there is a reason he has his stances. If he had anything more he'd be broken. Any less then he wouldn't be that great. His stances, oki game, rushdown and punishment are his foundation as a character.

Seeing as you just picked him up I can see where you're coming from. But I'd suggest that you play him a bit more seriously before you start to critique how others use him. If you play him like you do Mitsu as you said then maybe you should rethink your approach to him. Yoshimitsu is all about creativity and risk taking combined with solid play. There is no said way written in stone as to how he should be played. You're attitude towards other players should be "To each his own". I hope this helps bro ;) (Also, learn iMCF!)

Stance use plays into mindgames and such, since you force the opponent to react to you. Stance abuse gets your ass kicked when the other player knows its weaknesses, since you give him time to find a hole in your offense (Assuming the transitions don't get blocked all the time either).

Hmm pretty sure I use ALOT of stances/stance cancels and i do just fine :) Like M>D said... each yoshi has his own play style pretty much... Some play it safe and Bait iMCF the whole time, Some just use stances, and some are all around solid with stances and iMCF baits... Just find whats the most fun for you and keep on playing that way... Dont try to play like other people just because they say it works... Find out what works for you...

I've been playing Yoshi (casually) for a while now, although just recently I decided to perfect my own style/combos. I'm not saying EVERYONE plays him the same, but in my experience, most Yoshi players just abuse the hell out of his stances, usually to little avail other than against crappy players. Some of you may say that these players aren't any good, etc etc for leaving themselves open, but I suppose that all relates back to your point about risk.

The Mitsu comparison was meant to be taken loosely, obviously, if I were trying to play him just like Mitsu, I'd be playing Mitsu, but they can play similar mind games. I suppose I was just wondering why I saw less of it with Yoshi players.

I never tried to make it seem like I was criticizing you. But it's hard to understand exactly where you're coming from granted we are behind a monitor and keyboard. Taking risks is fine. In fact it's one of the major points in his offense. But intelligent risk taking is far different from just abusing stances. It depends as far as the usage of stances. I never said players who utilized stances more so than others weren't good. But then again we could be talking about two different things here. Let me put it in layman's terms:

Stance use=Good

Stance abuse=Bad

Example: If a sets player did a WS a:B and you blocked it then you obviously get 6K2K for free. Now if you decided to go into INT after a blocked WS a:B and throw away free punishment then chances are....you're abusing stances.

Stances are situational. Although I use stances/cancels/transition all the time, I don't do it to the point where I'm just putting myself in disadvantageous positions.

idk...truthfully, i've always been a bit of a kick whore...toss in a throw here and there...the stances, however, i usually use to fake out someone or to get in quick hits (most notably meditation)

Stances to me are his mind games. 44B+KB+K for example (yeah closes the gap after a:B+K and T6 quite well) still is a stance transition... most of the time cancels are only used on players who like to play defensively (the "thinking" player), beginner and some moderate players (online at least) just pound away, which doesn't really give any time for cancels... although I like to use 66A+B2B sometimes, meh, it's more of a mix up... I hope its all fun though...
