α Patroklos General Discussion/ Q&A

Yeah I have considered that option as well, the damage is totally not negligible from JF twister x2 after CH 33B. I just wanted to maximize damage as much as possible, gotta make 'em hurt!

Also, do you guys opt for twister after NH 33B for better oki or is it the same if you had done bA instead?

imo, it is better to do twister instead of bA after nh 33b. it is only 3 dmg less, but you have much more time to just run up and force a mixup... not to mention jf t has a chance of clean hitting, which would do more than bA anyway

But...what about character loyalty!? The man has FIRE from his freakin' HANDS. Clearly superior. Much like Alpha Pat doesn't even need a shield to rape fools.

I did that for SFxT, I picked Ryu over Ken. ; ; These hands are dirty with top tier whoreness. SF4/3S/ST, Ken 'til I die. Anyways, enough 2d fighter talk. I'm transitioning to 3d fighters to broaden my horizons so lets talk 3d.

So I'm new to pretty much every match up in the game considering I haven't played SC since 2, and even then it was only in a casual/locally competitive sense. I won't ask for specfics since there's a thread for that, but how do you go about maintaining consistent pressure? It seems in my hands I'm only capable of short bursts of pressure before I'm out of range and less fearful outside of crouching waiting for a move to be whiff punished by Twister. Knowledge good sirs?

Okay, firstly let me apologize with the most sincerity as I possibly can muster if this is not the correct place to put this, or if I have jumped the gun with a post. I just got SC5 a few days ago and picked Alpha Pat as my character of choice. I just simply like the way this dude moves and acts. Now, later on through friends I find out I have just opened up a can of worms because he is hard to play. Not only is he hard to play, I am new to SoulCalibur and am being bodied around every corner. I just cannot seem to grasp this game. I do not know if it is just because I am using a complex character, but yikes.. I do not dare write my win percentage.

Anyways, on to my question. I was directed to come to these boards for information, but to be quite frank, I am lost. I managed to locate the forum that listed the 1000 different acronyms used within this game's lingo. Beyond that I have no idea where to look or what to search for to improve not only my general knowledge of SC5, but my dos and don'ts with this character.

I come from a Street Fighter mindset where you have your bread and butters and your handful of staple moves. Does this game follow similar guidelines? If the answer is yes, then please, if it isn't too much of a hassle, direct me to where I need to go to learn the most basic of basics for learning this character. I have been trying to just figure things out on my own, but it just isn't working.

Again, I apologize if I stepped out of line with the forum guidelines with this post and hope I may be shown some mercy. Thank you all for your time and a big thanks in advance to anyone willing to provide me with any kind of links, information, or gamertags for contacting purposes.

P.S.- As a side note I guess it may be worth noting I play via Xbox Live.

Staples- http://8wayrun.com/threads/alpha-pats-top-10-moves.10455/

As far as apat goes he's kinda like a rushdown character with lots of 1 frame links(SF mindset). Your goal is to get in their face and give them hell. Once he's in he's got 33B/2363B, 66B/236B, A+G, and 214B+G which can all lead to 80+ combos. The 33B is for backstep/crouch and the throws for sidestep.

This is the simplest apat form of play, but the issue with apat is he's probably one of the hardest characters to learn execution wise. He doesn't have a ton of moves, but mastery of certain just frames is almost required to even play him casually. The main just frames are-
WC3a:B- One of the fastest moves in the game. Huge damage. Not safe.
WC3B:B- Crucial for counter hit combos. Decent poke.
1B:B- Tracks step really well. Leads to very nice damage.
1A:A:A- One of his few good lows that leads to nice damage.

You'll see a lot of 214 and 236 notation with apat because these are his step stances, and they are very important. First off both of them tech crouch(go under highs automatically). Second the 214 input puts him in a crouching state instantly. This is why you often see 2143a:B, or twister. The 236 puts him in an 8 way run state instantly. So 2363B would be the same as tapping 33B EXCEPT its several frames faster and less obvious.

So with that in mind if you really want to learn aPat go look at the staples thread and read up on the matchups and just watch some vids. Still i might recommend that if this is your first time playing SC you pick someone else to learn the basics with. Until you get some of this stuff down you're going to lose quite a bit with apat. I'd also recommend staying away from viola, voldo, zwei, and tira.

Awesome! Thank you so much Eji1700 for the information. I will save it and keep it close :).
In that thread you linked, are there any posts more note worthy then the others, or are they all pretty spot on? I see there are many different opinions expressed in there of moves that are focal points, so it is a little confusing.

If you had a handful of suggestions for additional characters I should play, who would they be? I can say right out of the gate I don't really like Nightmare, Mitsurugi, Astaroth, or Xiba. Those characters are just a little bland to me personally. If I myself had to pick other characters that interest me most in order from most interesting to least I would have to say Hilde, Leixia, Maxi, Natsu and Patroklos. Would you or anyone else suggest any of those as decent secondary picks for assistance learning the game?

First a question- Who do you play in SF or any other fighter for that matter?
Second question- How good do you want to get?
Third question- How much do you mind losing to learn?

Short reviews(i do not know too much about everyone but this is the best I can give.)-
Hilde- Somewhat rewarding, but at the same time seems to not quite get what she should for mastering her gimmicks(she was screwed up as hell in the previous game so it's no surprise she's a little lacking). One of the trickier characters to learn since she's got a charge gimmick. If you feel you can handle it however she's pretty fun.

Lexia- Pretty friendly character to learn. Mostly about pressure strings. Not the absolute best in the game but at least a solid mid if not high tier and shouldn't be too much work to just get the basics down.

Maxi- A little tricky. He's got a bazillion moves and stances, however this is the first game where he doesn't flat out suck once you learn them. Be warned, he's VERY masher friendly, and while you may win a lot of fights just wailing on the pad, a better player will make you pay for it. Worth learning if you like that sort of stuff.

Natsu- Very strong and not too complex. Has 1 pretty damn difficult justframe that's quite important, but other than that is decently easy(depending on how used to combo's you are). Even at lower levels of understanding you'll get lots of wins simply because she's got noob smashing setups that lead to 1/3 life or more and require almost not effort to execute.

Patro- Apparently has some holes in his gameplay but pretty new player friendly as well. Simple punish combo's into nice damage and good all round options. Shouldn't be too hard to pick up however at higher skill levels you might run into problems.

Easiest to use with the most rewarding outcome would probably be-
Natsu
Lexi
Patro
Maxi
Hilde

I'd suggest giving hilde a shot if you really like her, and if her gimmick drives you nuts then go ahead and try lexi.

First a question- Who do you play in SF or any other fighter for that matter?
Answer- I have a few characters I like but a few I love. Ibuki, Chun-li, and Cammy

Second question- How good do you want to get?
Answer- I would love to get as good as I possible am able to.

Third question- How much do you mind losing to learn?
Answer- I don't mind losing.. Heck I just got my 50 win achievement tonight and I think I have over 400 losses....

I have actually started messing with Hilde today and I really do like this character. I am curious as to what the gimmick you're talking about is. If things don't work out with her I will give Natsu a whirl I guess. I still intend on using Patsuka, but I will just have another character to bounce between.. I just love that character too much to drop it. The JFs don't really bother me that much with him to be honest. I cannot do them everytime, but I do not find any of them extremely hard to do other then 1B:B. That is the only one that just eludes the hell out of me completely. I can hit it maybe 30-40% of the time at most.

If you want to see dropped JFs and combos, check out the vid I just uploaded - a week of abstinence + deprived sleep = laughably bad execution, lol.

I do think 1B:B is still a staple move though, you will have to practice that.

I have another question about Patsuka here.. I read here somewhere that his 2A was a good mixup tool, but I am curious as to how exactly that is when it can be blocked high? I thought people meant it was a good high/low mixup tool, but apparently I got it wrong. Thanks for the assistance on this matter.

Its good because it catches all step, is really fast, has a tech crouch, is safe, really good on hit and when you have meter, combos into his CE. For that reason, its probably the best in the game.

Generic 2A is a really good tool in this game generally though, it tends to feature in most character's top 10s. =/

Tekken has crouch jab, Soul has 2A, lol.

Ok sakura air combo, i cannot get that move working correctly for the life of me. Anyone got any ideas as to how to get all of this working correctly? I can only seem to get the first 2 hits of that move
