A Quick Study of All Characters

KingZeal

[09] Warrior
Reading some of the threads here got me thinking: what characters are the best/worst at particular aspects of gameplay? I myself am no expert, and I don't play against much high-level competition, so it's difficult to say off experience. What I need are for some of the better players to sum up what makes particular characters godly in their certain areas.

[EDIT: I added what seems to be the most agreed-upon designates for certain categories. I still need more discussion for the rest, and if you contest any of the current entries, please discuss it here. I've also modified the categories to list the top three in each.]

Actually, I think Mitsu or Setsuka would fit better in A; Sets gets more damage and is safer, but Mitsu is the toughest to block. Yoshi belongs more in I.

C is Sophie or Taki (great punishes in different ways), E is Hilde, and G is Amy, no-brainers there.

D might be Kilik or Tira, and H might be Zas.

Best long range = Algol, best mid-range = Kilik probably (or Hilde?), and I'm not 100% sure on best close range (thinking it's between Yoshi & Taki). Worst long range would be a bunch of characters, worst close range might be Zas, and I'm not sure about worst mid-range (Vader?).

Cass seems like another one who might belong in M.

Also, I imagine Yoda has to be the worst in at least one of these things, I just don't know what.

There are more useful categories to add in, as well. I'll throw out a few:

Best throw game = Asta
Worst throw game = Amy or Zas

Best soul gauge game = Voldo
Worst soul gauge game = Cervy

Most guaranteed damage (from useful moves) = Setsuka
Least guaranteed damage = Rock

Strongest defense = either Apprentice (A+B throw break) or Kilik (Asura + WS B)
Weakest defense = Yoda (tiny soul gauge plus the unblockable lows glitch)

Best gimmicks = Voldo/Yoshi
Worst gimmicks = a bunch of characters

Good idea for a thread!

H- Either Rock or Astaroth. I'm really not sure about Rock, since he has no frame data here, but Asty's safest move on block is -13.

Edit: I really have to agree with rashreflection on Cervy's non-existant SG game. Also, I'm on the fence about whether Yoshi or Mitsurugi is better on Okizeme, since it's kinda tied in with mixup, but not entirely.

Double edit: Lol, I forgot about Talim. I can't confirm it heard she's got a shitload of moves that are fucking unsafe on hit (I remember Jaxel said this, so it has to be true), and I saw at least one in the wiki that was -9 on CH. Also, she has fucking terrible range, which makes it all the worse. She's probably got it rougher than Asty or Rock.

Are you saying Algol has great long-range game because of the bubbles? They're really for forcing a mid-range confrontation... unless you were talking about something else...

Mi-Na does best at long-range, if anything just because of FC 1B and 2A+B, G cancels.

When Algol gets a lead, his bubbles combined with 1A/BB make it difficult for a lot of characters to get in. Remember, there's no shame in taking a time-out win. =)

But yeah I probably should have mentioned Mina in there, particularly since you know she's always going to be tourney legal. But anyway...

No way is Asta the most unsafe. AB is safe (more than you can say for Zas or Maxi's equivalents), bullrush can only be punished at close range with Taki's AB, and even stuff like 22B4 is safer than it looks thanks to Asta's range.

I don't think Rock is the worst there either. His bullrush is safe even from Taki, WS A is only -10 with long range, and his just frame PT actually gives him a huge ADVANTAGE on block (enough to make 6K/throws uninterruptible).

Zasalamel doesn't have anything that's that good and that safe, which is why I picked him.

Another thing - Algol could win most guaranteed damage, but I have yet to see anyone pull off his long bubble loops in real matches.

Worst throw game = Amy or Zas
Huh? It's not all about raw damage, throws are part of Zasalamel's mixup game. The low damage gets balanced by the opportunities.

Best throw game I'd say it's a tie between Xianghua and Astaroth.
Astaroth has to seize the opportunity, and then he gets the throw damage.

Xianghua has the tools to create those opportunities. ...And the throw damage is heavy too.

What is considered "guaranteed damage" ?

@Rashreflection: I guess I see what you mean with the argument for Zas' unsafety. Lol, I never knew how safe Rock's bullrush was until I read the new frame data on him. Also, I agree with Wuht, since it wouldn't be much harder to come up with the three best and worst as opposed to just one (Hell, it might even reduce arguments).

i see what your getting at but asta still has the better and best throw game.

an oppurtunity to grab is presented to asta every time he blocks a move (aside from frame traps) that doesn't have very good push back.

astas throw range is beastly.
JF's throws are godly with their small break windows.
all his command grabs are huge damage and so are his low grabs... then theres wakes to consider after some grabs.
don't forget ground grabs/air grabs... asta is the only char that can grab shit like yoshi's dragonfly and punish people who use airbourne moves (with throws i mean, where other peoples throw would whiff a jumping char, asta will grab them)

he has at least 5 throws w/ follow ups that ring out, i can give you a run down on which throw and which direction if you want. 63214:b+g, 66k is probs his best example, reverse RO with huge range.

astas throw game is easily the best in the game imo.

Taki can air grab too, heh.

For the rest, well I shouldn't have written my previous post in my state, I was dead tired and too tired to think.
I don't know enough about these two characters enough to know what I'm saying exactly.

I only named them because Astaroth tends to grab often when I fight him, and when I played Xianghua for a while, I used throws way more often than with any other character. (Except maybe Rock.)

I disagree about Zas' throw game his opportunities are limited after a throw.

Cass should be near the top of the best throw game. She has a better throw game than X in my opinion. All her throws are powerful. She has two crouch throws and it isn't difficult to get a crouch stun in or you can slam someone in to a wall.

Then there is 66B+G. This is one of the best throws in the game. It has a short break window coupled with the ability to lead to massive combo damage.

Also her back throw rings out from behind and her A+G can ring out to the front.

Best throws go to
Asta, Ivy, Nightmare, Yoshie

Best ringout game
Asta, Nightmare, Yun Seong

Soul Dmg
Yun Seong, Voldo, Sophie

Sets may be 4 in throws, I don't see her contending with Ivy, Astaroth, or Yoshi.
If you just scratched you head and said... "Yoshi?" I'll say one thing.... Rainbow Drop RO!
