A tale of souls and swords, eternally retold...

This slideshow is very personal, was a lot of work (all the pics are brand new, and i specifically tried to make them as sharp as possible for you to see small details...)

i hope the site won't run into tech problems again, but for now it works...

Nb :
1/MAKE SURE TO CLICK ON SOUND ICON ON TOP LEFT HAND CORNER
2/SWITCH TO FULL SCREEN IF YOU WANT (PICS ARE NOT HIGH RES UNTIL LAST TWO)...
3/AND OF COURSE IT IS MANUAL FOR VIEWING AT YOUR PACE, SO LEFT/RIGHT ARROW FOR BROWSING

Last and final slideshow and CAS...enjoy !

Seeing that leprechaun in action was amazing, and I love that Black Adder dual wielding, your Leixia (is that how its spelled?) jungle theme is very cute and I never realized how to utilize the mask in your Persian Ivy, never taken a look at it but I might for some new creations. That Mitsu black knight is amazing also. I have to admit I am going to copy your shield for him xD

The Leperchaun (spefically created for matchup against Le Bello's Digby Bones :

Digby.... Bones? THAT'SNOTHISNAMEWHATAREYOUDOINGWHYGODWHY?

In other news, your Leprechaun resembles The Cluricawne of Monagha, slightly, but the hat (while cool), doesn't make any sense. A pointed conical hat, or singular-pointed hood would've been more accurate. This has more flavours of harlequin.

I do, dearly adore it though.

RE: Western Slideshow.

Wow. Westerns aren't my thing, so excuse me if I only give a cursory glance. That said, the red-head with that custom pistol you made is veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrry alluring. I love her, and that gun is magnifique.
Most of these I've seen. New pictures or not, there's not much to say. Nice angles?

I do like the non-Cancan Tira. (Obviously I love the whorey dancer one too, but I said that previously.) Although the foot-pistol, whilst interesting, just looks like an attempt at sticking detail in for the sake of it.

Native American styled Maxi recolour is nice.

Clever pocket-cards on Algol. Might steal that for Digby. Maybe.

Over all an impressive bunch, as per usual, with very few weak designs. Still think you're posting way too many things at once though. A good reason people will hold off on commenting is because of the shear volume. Especially when it's a slideshow, and there are a lot of new characters to try comment.

But let's all be honest for a second here. We all know the CaS forum has slowed way down. With the casuals that were the lifeblood of this place growing bored and moving onto newer games, or turning to the ever-more-engaging side of competitive play, the tumbleweed (keeping it thematic) is starting to show a little.

Sure we get the occasional new talent coming in, and that's great, but it must be awful to join a dying bored, and then see all these renown members churning out dozens of new, interesting designs all the time, while you struggle to make even one that you think can match up.

One thing I love, is how some of the "better" members here, tend to be quite self-centred, even in non malicious ways.
Posting in somebody else's thread and saying "I think yours is ok, but mine is much better, look I'll even add a picture" must be genuinely disheartening, and it'll make the poster look like a bit of an ass. Also, begging people to come look at your stuff, even PMing them and saying "hey, you commented on their things, why not mine?" is childish, and anyone who does that is acting like a brat.

If people comment on your stuff, excellent! If they don't, deal with it.

That's not aimed singularly at anyone, but a couple of you might wanna think about that.

I swear, I used to love it when people liked my opinion, it was nice. But when people bug me into looking at their thread, that makes me really not give two fucks. No wonder this board is dying, it's an attention-whoring popularity contest for like, 30% of you.

When i once created a thread for your CAS and for Matty's illness, didnt you see it is passion and generosity that drives me into sharing...you once wrote how you suddenly understood why artists needed feedback remember...but thanks, i certainly agree with most of the above (even if i dont think i am not that french ;o) and you somehow made me realize how pointless it is to carry on.

digbydingbidiggbeee....sorry could never get it right !

Emmet "Digby" O'Dwyer is his name, good sir.

I never said you lacked for passion. Or generosity. Nor did anything I say contradict the statement that an artist needed feedback. And I don't recall saying anything about you being or not being French?

I can't help but wonder if you even read the comment at all, or am I the one remembering it wrong?

ouch !
i want the true Le Bello back - please ! ;o

I'd like an actual comment on not only my post, but on my second post in which I address the errors you made.

Do you want the "true" Le Bello, or the one that reviews CaS and likes posts and sings your praises across the community and is too polite to say what he really feels about people's attitudes? Because I find the change of pace quite refreshing. You're taking too much of it personally. Sure, you're part of some it - It's half the reason it's in your thread (the other half being that the traffic here is higher then most others), but not all of it.

Look, I apologise I went off on a bit of a strop, but as I've said - If you dislike my little tantrum, report it, ignore it and move on. I still made some perfectly valid comments you've chosen to completely ignore, or were they too "asinine" for you?

Thanks for the heads-up, Vilarcane. I'm an Okie, so I've got a soft spot for the wild west, and I'm really impressed with how you made certain garments and patterns look western - especially the "bolt action" pistol. (Though I'm not sure I like it inter-penetrating Tira's foot - concept's good and the player card is awesome but I hope you find some way to hide the butt sticking out of the bottom of her boot.) I agree the cigarette fits; in that final scene it seems to enhance Tira's pensive expression.

As one of the noobs La Bello mentioned (game more than half a year old when I bought it), I have to admit that there's something you achieve that still eludes me, a quality of richness without being gaudy. When I try to go there, I find myself peeling back the layers, reminding myself that less is more. I like all of my own designs, and those designs make me want to learn the styles of the characters in many cases more than the originals do, but when I look at yours, I wonder what I could do with mine so that I'd like them even more. I still haven't had time to read your whole thread yet. When I do, what's the etiquette about commenting on or asking about older work?

Apologies accepted ;o) ! i too apologize for being a complete d**k to a good friend ;o)) - your comments are valid and NOT asinine (never said that oh god, did I) !? i like ur criticism on leperchaun... on the show i was slightly put off when you start by saying you dont like western when you got the cutest leix cow girl around - one i genuinely adore (a french word you use a lot)...next time no holds barred ok ?

First off, thanks for the interesting viewpoint on my work...i like your humble approach to CAS making, and i definitely agree on the fact that making cool originals makes people dig into the game so much more than the rather bland cast on offer.
Once you are in on it and your creativity isn't anymore hampered because you know the workarounds that allow you to think outside the box, the editor allows you to do wonders...when i first saw your cigarette loving bunch, i was struck not because of the very realistic look but also on all the thinking process (i called it R&D) behind them.

Then a word of advice, when you start reaching a certain level of proficiency, it quickly becomes highly addictING (somebody will get the *wink*) and i did not realize until today that posting them here can create a certain sense of jealousy and even discourage.
What i started to do back then was to share the towards a specific CAS by adding a few design notes, even if it meant people would have less to discover by themselves and comment on...it was a hard choice because i really preferred doing quizzes to teach people what i learnt the good way, but i felt a (very understandable) loss of interest around that...

To answer your concluding question, there is no etiquette for comments on older stuff, you can certainly quote pics and text as you like, and i will gladly take you to the design process if it helps you peel off the layers to a proper understanding on how to create a CAS with persona, a true soul, one that works as a whole and produces emotion in-game.

And of course, i would be immensely glad to know someone is still digging into 60 pages and the hundreds of pics and comments in this thread to bring his own CAS adventure to higher levels, and would be proud to comment on your work if you do...sincerely

oh and what is an Okie ? (Oklahoma, i dunno ?)

>i was struck not because of the very realistic look but also on all the thinking process (i called it R&D) behind them.

That's a good thing to call it. I can't despair of my blessings, for I am not utterly lacking in creativity, but it is of the flavor known to engineers rather than artists, a flair for technical rather than aesthetic solutions.

>oh and what is an Okie ? (Oklahoma, i dunno ?)

Yes, I'm from Oklahoma, formerly Indian Territory. Look at a map of the state, and in the place names you'll see references to nigh every tribe that hails from east of the Rockies, because they all got displaced and settled in Oklahoma, which wasn't seen as valuable before the Artesian aquifer was discovered. Needless to say, crammed together in a state that wasn't yet a bread basket, they didn't all get along. There's a good deal of cowboy history too, several cattle drive trails including the Chisholm ran through the state from Texas to Dodge City and the railroad, and farmers were no friendlier than Injuns to a herd trashing their crops.

GEF

You are definitely a very educated and interesting Okie, Gef ;o)
I really enjoyed and learned from reading the paragraph above...

i myself am more of a sensitive and creative person than a practical/technical/engineer type of guy.
I couldn't fix anything remotely technical IRL (you know plumbing and DOY), except things that really interest me like IT/Home Cinema...

I am also obviously very good at pissing people off at the moment and then trying to FIX it ;o)

I have a question, pardon the off topic but : Kevin Costner is i think of (partly) indian origin, and i like his western movies especially Open Range and DWTW, but is he really supporting / doing the indian-amercian community any good ?

ok, about you and CAS, i'll let you figure how to go from there, but know that i am here if you need help, you are free to steal anything you like and are of course welcome to ask, invite to match-ups / cas show-off if you are on XBL.

PS : probably just a typo, but writing La Bello is wrong, it is Le Bello ;o)

Since Gef has been asking about the garments and design choices behind the western CAS, let me elaborate but first explain the idea behind the slideshow at first.

Disclaimer : this WILL be a wall of text even the mighty Pascuzzi can't beat...(admittedly in an english that is nowhere near his ;o)

I wanted to challenge myself to do a bunch of Western figures ranging from the Good, the Bad to the Ugly, all with different art directions and different clothes and , all towards achieving the best "Far West" look (not saying the most authentic), meaning mostly brownish and low intensity colors, faded by the sun, and use of dedicated stickers and effects to add to that "desert town" feel.

Also trying to make as varied use of special items as possible that would match a specific CAS' attitude : ie. big "reverse" holstered gun for Pistolero, a la Rodriguez foot cannon, shotgun, dynamite, hammer and nails and all that...

I'll focus on some of the newer CAS rather than the ones i had done a few months back...

The Sheriff's design notes :

The idea came from the oathbearer chest piece i wanted to use on a CAS, which cat medal looks pretty much like a sheriff's golden star from a distance...also the included scarf allowed me to give it the proper western look, along with the compatibility with the shoulder wrap turned into a poncho through specific use of pattern and colors.

The shirt in red and blue squares (not exactly the default colors) is there to give the whole CAS the appropriate level of contrast.
The ammo belt zipper sticker is nothing overly original, but it helps complement the CAS by adding a layer of details and realism.

I used gradients on the jeans to give the wear effect on the knee caps.

The chest gun i am also quite happy with, a compact yet threatening gun for a quicker draw

Not much to say about the leather satchel in the back

The cigar was the obvious choice for final slot to give him a more badass look, and because i couldn't really figure out how to do a wad of tobacco in the first place ;o)

The opposite in terms of art direction is the Yankee General who needed a cleaner and more colorful look to inspire authority and power, hence the neat blue uniform (almost), perfect haircut and golden buttons and spyglass, and the luxury ranger gun, and some other minor details.

I'll be quicker for the others...

The Undertaker :

Cervy Undertaker with a temper, both chic and gloomy, with hammer and nail to use on coffins on the poor souls shot down by the other members of the bunch...a little chain (supposedly a pocket watch's chain, the chain being in the chest pocket) and a rose for the grave or the widow...the thumbnail had to be as fitting as possible, as i can't name 3Ps (can be seen in the slideshow)

caywmo6bqrauz1e04.jpg

El Pistolero (Pisto-Hero) :

Apart from the different clothing, overall darker grittier look and big fat gun and body build, i wanted him to get the proper mexican look by working on the face...choice of basic face (one i never used before on any case btw), adding a oversized and rotated scar to carve the chin deeper in the middle, a blind eye and a bloddy knife scar from the latest bar brawl

caywtwlzf6w1d60bo.jpg

caywzfkg1k90eplpg.jpg

The bounty Huntress :

Here i wanted a light weight (hence use of nurse boots, skirts and light brown shades) yet deadly character (Tira style suits fine with the ring as a lasso and her two moods), making use of Gef's peerless cig technique (i did have some trouble doing it tho ;o), a short cape as a poncho, and of course the foot gun with the butt of the gun making it look like the trigger and the heel of the shoe like a butt

caywwd10r2fiut5pg.jpg

As a bonus, let me throw in a modern cow-girl, my take on the cow-girl leixia of Le Bello, with a twist, a girl in Oklahoma having fun at the fair...again with a different approach in terms of equipment and colors/patterns.

And a very special flavour in terms of special items use ;o)

Sorry i did not have time to make in-game shots for this one...

I know Le Bello is right when he says i am throwing too much stuff at folk at the same time, so apologies for that...again, but i have my reasons, believe me

Yup. Still loving that bounty hunter Tira. She's the best by far.

I'm not so keen on the modern Leixia, though I'm not so keen on modern CaS, though the lolly was a nice touch indeed.

Thanks, yeah she is my favourite too (which is why i put more pics of her in the slideshow ;o), what i just found out is that if you win a match while being "gloomy" (you know when there is a violet halo and she gets and alt/darker set of move, when she says kitty kitty and all...), then she gets a gloomy win stance that looks very nice. I'll try to capture and post that...

glad you noticed the lolly, it was just a bonus CAS anyways ;o)

Once i invented bonus pics as a reward for comments or good answers to quizzes, talk about childish games...i don't do it no more, naeh...i have grown up...(dohoho :o)

Bonus pics for Le Bello / Gef / Markoed

Gloomy Tira in a gloomy stage makes for eerie pics

- patterns are effective where appropriate (dress, skirt, headdress band) but noisy and unnecessary otherwise (headdress feathers, fur around calves)

- red and brown color scheme is expected, but appropriate.

- Interesting zipper sticker through midsection adds detail
- leaf pattern is busy, not an appropriate choice as executed

- good variation on shades of brown; goes well with black

- arrow through hat is whimsical

- pattern heavy top vs plain bottom looks unbalanced

- front holsters look awkward; suggest moving to back or sides

- I suggest equipping a belt; bottom of shirt looks like a skirt when untucked
- similar pattern noise problem to pocahontas. Patterns on feathers, stockings, shoes out of place.

- Pattern on shoes imparts interesting detailing to strings, but does not look great on shoes proper.
- cowgirl set fits leixia well

- bow and arrow construction is cool, composed well
- good scarring, trauma detailing on face, around right eye

- patterning on vest is good, if a little bit noisy

- pinstriping on sleeves is good choice

- zipper stickers add interesting detailing across torso, but would look better with additional subtle detailing to support zipper stickers

- Zwei 2p pants are good part choice

- inner leather vest proper complements outer leather vest well at shoulders

- clever use of scar sticker adds sculpted look to chin
- brown-orange gradient does excellent job of taking swallowtail coat towards western direction

- revolver construction is interesting

- skull patterning on hat badge is clever

- not sure about the skull sticker on the back

- cuffs do not blend well with swallowtail coat

- pants and boots are left plain
- good pinstriping on vest and pants

- crocodile skin pattern on hat is odd; remove or use more subtle pattern

- snowflake pattern on shirt is interesting, but I suggest decreasing size if possible

- band on hat should be colored more subtly; use darker grey

- subtle grey patterning on vest is great

- corsage on vest is nice touch, but chain is random; pocket watch chains are usually connected to vest button

- make left hand bolt thinner along one dimension to make it look more like a hammer

- use belt to tuck shirt in and eliminate skirt at bottom of shirt
- I recommend another pattern for mink scarf or none at all

- I recommend darker white/grey for gradients on skirt

- soothsayer's gloves and boots pair well with dress

- subtle pattern on mask is a nice touch

- small hat goes well with hair, feathers
- stripe pattern on horn makes a nice telescope

- color scheme is monochromatic, but not boring

- suggest color correction: redder gold on buttons, less saturation on gold belt (maybe. Not sure if just stage lighting)
- good use of patterns and stickers on vest. Patch sticker adds additional layer above red pattern, another layer from wings sticker

- good patterning on quiver strap

- interesting use of horns on headdress

- all parts make sense; fit well into native american-themed outfit
- monochromatic, but not boring; patterns help to give detail

- interesting cigarette construction

- striping on stockings adds texture; allows for dual layer, suggesting stitching-on-see-through

- right foot revolver is silly; might pair interestingly with boots in terms of shape, but conceptually makes little sense and looks awkward as executed
- suggest less red, browner color for jacket
- blue portion of Oathbearer's raiment pairs well with blue chaps

- crocodile skin pattern not effective on satchel. Reduce in size or remove.

- Chest-holstered gun is interesting design; works well on raiment

- star sticker on hat is too small

- great use of rear loincloth; pairs well with rear satchel

- suggest increasing size of zipper sticker on belt of loincloth

- gradient pattern is quite effective at imparting wear on chaps
- very nice dynamite stick construction

- additional detailing could be useful on jacket, but front pocket is nice

- subtle pattern on bandana is nice

- additional detailing needed on tie

- boots are left stock color. Suggest dark brown similar to jacket.
- plaid pattern works surprisingly well on jacket

- guardian's neck cloth pairs well with jacket

- brown cuffs on jacket out of place. Suggest lighter tan color

- interesting heart-shaped lollipop design

- again, gradient pattern is clever method of imparting wear on ring pants

- suggest some sort of texturing on cowgirl skirt

- rainbow pattern on earrings looks messy

Overall, very nice set, classic VILARCANE quality. A western-themed Soul Calibur is an interesting thought and this set serves as a nice foray into that concept.
