Concerns About SC4 Hori Stick EX2 for Xbox 360

Hey guys, I am just about to order this stick..

Amazon.com: Xbox360 Fighting Stick EX 2 - Soul Calibur 4 Limited Edition: Video Games

However, people are saying the buttons stopped working for them a few weeks later. I really don't feel like going to order new buttons and all that. I just want a stick that will last and work. Can anyone comment on this stick that owns it? I was excited, but now I'm a little bummed out because this is the only option for 360 users who want an affordable, but decent stick.

Also, is there a difference in quality between that stick and this more expensive, but less pretty one?

Thanks guys. Please reply as soon as possible since I plan on ordering soon :)

I play Yoshi and easily put in 20 hours a week spamming iMCFs. So, my A&B buttons especially take a beating. I haven't had any issues with that stick and I've had it for 7 weeks or so. Your mileage may vary, but I'm happy with mine. No clue on quality differences between the two.

They're the same stick. I have the DOA4 version and the EX. No difference in quality. Both still work. (Just don't let 'em get dusty. That gums them up quickly.)

Might be worth looking into a custom stick. Costs more, but they're much easier to maintain if something does go wrong.

My father is modding my EX2 stick with Sanwa parts so I won't be needing this stick. I heard this stick is pretty bad.

I've had mine since launch, and it still works fine. It's gone for months without use too (though it was in a drawer, so it didn't get dusty).

My only gripe with it is that the stick has a lot of dead space, which is a common thing I've noticed from this type of Hori stick. I've gotten used to it somewhat, but it still throws off my 236 and 214 moves sometimes. Also, don't let the stick go, bouncing back from a full press it's likely to press the opposite direction (this REALLY throws off my moves, as I generally don't hold the stick when at neutral).

Overall it's a good stick. Marginal has a point about custom sticks, you can get really good quality, but it does come at a significant cost.

Hmmm dead space? Meaning some parts of the stick wont have response? That sounds like it'd make 8 way run become 5 way run lol.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'll let a few more people post before I submit my purchase.

No, meaning that since it's a digital stick, you there is a dead space surrounding the entire stick where you move it, but nothing happens. You have to move it far enough to click the sensor before it registers an input (which is not the case with analog sticks, which register the instant you start moving the stick). I might be using the wrong term, but that's what I meant.

I fixed this on my other stick by replacing it with a new stick component which had a larger base (so it doesn't move as far before hitting the sensor), but I didn't want to do that with this one because when I opened it up it didn't look quite as straight forward.

Somewhat offtopic (but not really) question.
How much difference does swapping out the stock hori buttons, stick, gate, ect. with sanwa parts really make?

The sanwa buttons are a lot smoother and more sensitive. You don't really have to put much pressure on them. The Hori's need a lot more pressure before they register.

I take it that the sanwas are also more durable?
And if i switch the gate from square to octagon, inputting things like 41236 or even just the quarters should essentially be easier right?

Well, having modded three sticks, here's what's happened to them...(I don't think that we messed up the soldering or anything; one of my good friends helped me with it, he's pretty experienced.)

One after modding, when B+K were hit together, only B would register and then K wouldn't work for about the next 5 presses.
Another after modding, when A+B were hit together, only B would register. A would work immediately, and aB and bA slides worked just fine.

Didn't know that it's a common problem with the Horis.

My Hori-stick 360 X-button works like 85% of the times I use it. Frustrating as hell. BTW, is it easy to somehow fix this? I have never opened a stick before.

Ive had my ex2 as far back as the launch of vf5. It currently works flawlessly and ive never had any problems with it a quick unplug and plug back in couldent fix.

these sticks seem to be very susceptible to static shock.

I gave it a zap on the bottom headphone jack port and now my 6 doesn't work. I opened the puppy up and tested the contact blocks for continuity and they are all fine.

Leads me to believe that something else is pooched on the PCB.. but I can't find it.

Can't speak for the 360 stick, but as for its ps3 counterpart, I'm having problems with the joystick gate registering in certain directions. ><

OMG THIS MUST BE THE REASON! If you can actually confirm that you actually gave it a shock. I can't confirm mine, cause it probably just happened.

Srsly, I have the odd nickname of "Mr. Static Electricity." (And "Spiky Asian Ball of Hate," but we won't go there.) So uh, yeah.

Sora, that normally happens because idiots didn't solder the wires on those switches properly. If you open the stick up and look at the place where the wires connect to the microswitches, sometimes they can break.

You know what, I just want to make a goddamned custom arcade stick. Next week I plan on doing it.

Usually unplugging the stick then plugging it back in will clear up that kind of problem.

The more annoying problem is when the buttons start to gum up. (This is what causes most of the stick doesn't work anymore complaints.) That is still somewhat manageable though. You can just pry out the button and give the interior a swabbing. Brought my B button back, though now my A button is staring to suck in the exact same manner. Argh.

Well, here's how it went down...

I was playing single player practise with maxi, I was holding 6 when I shocked the controller and maxi started running forward, even tho I stopped pressing forward. I couldn't get him to stop, it was like the 6 direction was stuck.

So, I unplugged the stick, plugged it back in and 6 no longer works. I tried it on other xbox's too, it's pooched.

Hori Sticks are great... I have used them from an lllonnng time and still do (Thou not for Soul Calibur, Just Always Tekken)

I still have and use once in a while, my Playstation1 - Soul Blade/Tekken2 Hori Stick (the old Grey and Yellow one and still works like a charm! Still the same joystick and buttons used today).

Thou there are problems with them shorting out and a button or so will not work, I have a couple Tekken ones and one works while the other is shorted out when I got it in Japan. I have had my share of bad ones but if they work the first couple of weeks, they will work for years to come... just like my Grey/Yellow one, About 10 years old and still great and find that the new ones are actually just the same...
