Distant Worlds: an SCV Regular Cast Alternates Contest

Here are my first couple of entries; with hope, I will add a third shortly. These are screenshots taken by the default PS3 game camera, so my apologies for the small size.

American Army Medic Raphael

Back in his SC2 biography, there was a brief mention that Raphael was trained in medicine, so I'm revisiting that idea here. I think I did the best I could with the Creation resources, but I ran out of stickers before I was able to make every detail I wanted to.

Character Biography:

Even before playing their part in helping to liberate the thirteen colonies from England’s tyranny, the Sorel family had a long and proud military tradition. If a man carried the name, he carried a sword-for a gentleman does not brandish a rifle during peacetime. When the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand became the catalyst for a war unlike any other, Raphael Sorel quietly thanked God that his homeland in the New World had declared neutrality, for he knew that if America joined the fight, he would be obligated to leave his prestigious life as a physician, and that he might not return to see his daughter grow up.

But such a luxury was not to last. When the Untied States declared war on Germany, the scion of the Sorel family announced his intentions to join the efforts not as a soldier, but as a medic, where he could be of more use to the Army (and more likely to return home). Upon hearing this, his father informed him that he was a coward, and unfit to invoke the family name if he would not fight like a warrior.

With scorn and defiance in his heart, Raphael took the heirloom blade with him when he left for Europe and the trenches that had been forsaken by God, determined to save any lives he could in a fight that was not his. What awaited him was a Hell that could only exist in a man’s nightmares, where he has taken more lives than he has spared, and the brutality quickly ebbs away at his humanity.

Highlands Warrior Patroklos

Obviously, he's more thematic than historically accurate, but I had fun making him.

Character Biography:

He had been weak, once. When he was a boy, his clan’s enemies had come to their very home, wild-eyed and bloodthirsty. They had slaughtered many men that day, with young Pàdair’s father among the dead. But while the invaders had granted the men death in battle, they had taken any women they could get, and that was the last day that Pàdair had seen his sister. His mother had taken him into her arms and they had hidden, away from the enemy warriors and away from the cries of his sister. They had survived, and he hated her for it.

Now that he was a man, he could prove that he was not weak, would never be weak again. Old enough to join the war parties, Pàdair had taken up his sword and donned the cloth of his father, eager to prove himself and to spill blood to avenge his lost sister. And spill blood he did.

His clothes streaked with the vitae of his clan’s rivals and his face painted with woad like the warriors of old, Pàdair fancies himself the clan’s next war leader. More experienced warriors know that he is young and foolhardy, but he will not listen to anything but the singing of his blade. He cannot hear the warnings against his forthcoming tragedy.

If you've any idea on the cables and components I'll need, that'd be helpful.
I'm not really sure. First thing I think of is to get a capture card, preferably HD. The problem with that is that good capture cards tend to be pricey. A quick Google search lead to a page of Amazon best sellers that ran anywhere from $90-200+ USD.

Alternatively, we could do what Wandrian just suggested: forward the formula to someone with a capture card and/or a PS3. Whoever's on 360 would just have to write up the formula and take pics from whatever angles they want to show their CaS for the person with the PS3 to recreate. I would be more than happy to do this for any 360 entrant, but I need to find a way to get more slots, first. I only have one USB drive and I want to have easy access to any files I'd want to load without having to worry about overwriting any of them. Maybe keeping a copy of the save file outside of the folder it's in would work?

At first glance it looks like a looser form of Le_Bello's latest challenge (not restricted to Europe), but it's not.
Yeah, it's really more about taking an already existing character and rephrasing their design within the context of an alternate setting. Plus, this prompt generates interest in the SCV cast with minimal sacrifice of the creative power of Creation mode. I remember reading somewhere that someone said they were anti-CaS because it takes interest away from the regular cast into whom the devs put so much effort. I'd like to think that the prompt starts to achieve some kind of middle ground between people who think like that and those of us who like to push the limits of Creation mode, but I won't realistically expect anything like that.

I really enjoyed reading these. I'll be waiting for that third submission.

I don't know if a capture card is necessary, if I can get my xbox to use my monitor instead of my TV, then theoretically I could screencap the images using PRTSCRN.

And it's awfully nice of you to be willing to do that, but I wonder if you're imagining just how much time that would take to do, for nearly no real reward. As such I won't ask anyone to do that for me, unless I know I can repay the favour somehow, though the offer is generous~

Alright! after one revison, I am ready to share my Viola (I'll probably enter two more but this was the one that struck me the most). Viola has an "unknown" origin, but if she is, in fact, Amy; then she's French. Taking her backstory into account I immediatly had a direction. Part of Violas history involves her being a pariah for telling the truth in her visions, regardless of peoples feelings about it. Taking this into account, I thought of the tragedy of Cassandra (not CS's version, but the greek heroin/villan for which she was named). In the play, she was cursed with the "gift" of prophesy. No one liked what she was saying so the people and the govenment slanderd her. She predicted the fall of Troy, and erego was blamed for it ("I have committed no crime... save to tell the truth"). Although Viola was never lynched for destroying a major metropolitan city, I considered it an exacerbation of her story ("Troy has not fallen by my hand, or my wish, but as I foresaw"). Keeping this in mind I did a version of Viola as Cassandra (who lived far before the events of Soul Calibur) with the 2p pallete; to keep within the rules.

If you're talking about connecting the 360 directly to a standalone computer monitor, you should be able to do that with an HDMI or VGA cord, whichever the monitor has a port for. I've never seen a monitor with a built-in PRTSCRN function, though.

Also, you're probably right about the formula-forwarding thing. Time isn't a problem. Provided the entrant supplies a formula that's complete, easy to understand, and pictures that show off any sticker placement, the finished product, and whatever pictures they'd want to post, I could probably finish each entry in under 10 minutes. However, that's the problem: the material has to be communicated exceptionally well. Otherwise, the entrant will have an entry that he or she may not be happy with. This kind of thing would also screw with the logistics of the contest towards the very end of the entry period. Until we get a cross-platform formula-sharing feature, it will always be best for the 360 CaS maker to take his or her own pictures.

I'd suggest asking someone with a PS3 for HD screens instead since that's easier and less troublesome(just ask until someone accepts), but I'll be happy to help out for what that's worth. As long as you can do the formula to the exact specifications(write down exactly as it is in-game and for non-numbered sliders note how many ticks from one side it is), anyone willing can help. Indian Natsu does look a bit bland in that lower quality shot, but I'd like to see it in some more passable quality images.

@ Le_Bello: You do much CAS critiques in-game? I'd love some on mine, it keeps seeming lacking on the forum for mine :/

I most certainly doodle bug. Though typically I'll have an in-game gander, then post on here. You can add me on that box of x's if you'd like.

I noticed that 3 of my existing Algols fit the rules of this contest and decided to share them.
Γοργών Algol (Greece) remaining fearsome yet hailing from a different distant past. Irony in that Gorgons are female.
This custom uses Algol's SCIV 1p color scheme (dark/black scales with some gold inlays):

Άρης Algol (Greece) serving some Alexandra family realness while retaining his famous frown.
Color scheme is that of his SCV 1p (white/bright with gold inlays):

侍 Algol (Japan) bringing his feud with Mitsurugi closer to home.
Colors of his SCV 2p (Dark reds/browns with pale yellow/gold inlays)

Cool contest, I like the Scottish Pat! I hope more people submit.

I took a slightly different approach.

Japanese Siegfried

I don't think I need to give him a bio since he's the same good ol Siegfried except Japanese (or at least born and raised in Japan). The only major difference I can see is that Schwarzwind would be called Kurokaze :P
I wasn't sure about changing the hair, but I thought it fits the theme of change.

More ethnic stuff!

It's based on his SCIV 1P colour scheme. Dark greys, gold bits and some red trim I *think*.
As for his story, it's a bit hazy. I just really like the idea of him being the Hero King and having some connection to Tekken's King/Armour King (through the mask alone if nothing else), especially with the line "I'll show you how true kings fight!". He's Algol, he could easily have been worshiped as some kind of deity...right?

A. Patroklos, modern day USMC

The color scheme must resemble that of any of the subject's official costumes throughout the Soul series. It does not need to be a 1:1 recreation, but the resemblance should be noticeable upon first glance.

I see orange and green. Which Pat/aPat 1P or 2P does he take his color scheme from? If none, I can't accept this entry, but please feel free to resubmit with a color scheme taken from any Patroklos/Alpha Patroklos 1P or 2P. Simply delete your previous post, so there is no confusion come voting period, and submit your edited entry.

My 3 entries...there (alternate with blue hair and last shots are gimmicks, not entries (unauthorized colors, but i kept those ;o)
All with SC5 P1 and P2 color scheme (details at moderator's request ;o).
I know Le Bello wanted me to enter with Hildegaru, but that was taking the fun from creating for the challenge...

All I could think of was AC. But Robocop Hilde is VERY impressive indeed.
