kingace...we HAVE organization. lol. events are still, and have always been in the works. framework? necessary? sure. but i'd like to see it come from those who have proven themselves to be competent TO and community supporters in the past.
as far as the free tournament model...it is great but it has flaws. first of all, pots have to come from somewhere. if not entry fees then from sponsors. as a TO you have to draw a line between what you want from a sponsor, and how far you are willing to let them push you. quakecon, your example, is a great example. sure, the free tournament drew players. i am positive it enticed other gamers already in attendance to enter. i am sure it boosted numbers by quite a bit. on the other hand, and i mean no disrespect to those who clearly worked their asses off to make this happen, but it made a situation of accessibility to TV's and machines. it made a situation of availability of setups for casuals. it took the time control out of the hands of the calibur TOs, and it cost us-the viewing online community- the standard and expected benefit of a stream to follow. i am not sure if i would call that a positive model to follow at all.
as far as overall community organization, i think i speak for many when i say that as individual groups, we have done quite well of working toward growing our own nodes, and also of coming together as a whole. to be told that "something needs to be done" by someone who has not lifted a finger in the past to help existing efforts is, quite frankly, a slap in the face. basically if you want to help organize future events and community prospects, you have to begin with what is already in place, not cast stones at it. feed your local community, then plan greater things.
What organization? What you're saying now is greatly affected by Jaxel's annoucement some days ago. For many of you, you had zero faith in this game until Jaxel's post gave you some hope. You can say we have organization, but when SC5 hits and the numbers absurdly increase you will realize who false that really is.
The model that was run at Quakecon failed, because it underestimated the turnout for the FGs, and they were too many FGs to begin with. We didn't need fucking Smash, 3rd Strike, or MvC2 there. SC4 and Tekken 6 both had bigger participants than most of those games and we didn't even get to the stream. Hell T6 is newer and we beat it out by a TV lol. And even then I am sure if SSF4 had started earlier or later, shit could have turned out better. The pot came from the community, and Monsters Arcade.
Back to this organization that you speak of. Leadership in this community doesn't exist. It's easy for us to get things done when they're fewer players, but when it's crowded like it was at the beginning, its pretty much chaotic.
We can't let the community divide itself like it did for both SC3 and SC4 in ban wars.
If people have concerns we have to be quick to address them, in both previous cases, nothing was done until the damage was. When the time comes you think it will be easy for us to quickly decide what's best for the community's growth? I doubt it.
Running Nationals, hmm yeah. Good Luck with this one.
The one thing I hate is the cluster fucking of majors, everyone just wants to have a major apparently. If we can spread them out somehow, it's better for everyone. Maybe get a schedule marking all major events happening each year in their respect dates, ahead of time.
If you want to get something done, you can't WCMaxi it. Especially these days, you might end up banning a ton of people. What you have to do is get Regional Directors on the same page.

Lol did you hear Bats raging after his Hilde failed against Soupy's Yoda? Shit was hella funny.
