How did you establish 'favorite' characters?

Aesthetics?
Yesss, I'm shallow and pretty much only use blondes in video games. I didn't even notice until someone pointed it out. Some examples: Pyrrha, Cassandra, Patroklos from SC, Cammy from SF, Peach from Mario games.. You get the idea. I must admit, aesthetics is probably the factor here with the most weighting for me.

Execution difficulty?
A little bit. Some characters are just impossible to use if you've got sloth-like reflexes, like me. I will attempt to use said characters, but I'll probably give up if it doesn't work out. This is why I don't use aPat. XD

Tournament tier rankings?
Hmm, no.

Back-story?
Not initially, but a character's story is definitely what keeps me interested.

Unique moves?
Not really.

Weapon type?
Again, a little bit. I've always been a fan of the sword and shield styles in the Soul Calibur games, but it's not a deciding factor. I used Talim in SCII, so that kind of throws that idea out the window. XD

I think for me, when it comes down to it, I've got the like the look of the character to attract my attention, but the personality and the fighting style is what matters in the long term. Winning with these characters also helps, lol

Aesthetics? Yes. Most times, I go for Asians. I got the yellow fever...or I'm your typical weeaboo.
Execution difficulty? If I like the character enough, execution will soon be child's play.
Tournament tier rankings? Surprisingly, there isn't many Yoshis. Guess I'll have to be one of the heroes for now.
Back-story? Yes. Sometimes I like to pretend I'm that character and do silly fangasm stories.
Unique moves? I'm indifferent since I'm into aesthetics. Contradictory tongue I speak haha.
Weapon type? Not too picky on weapons, but I do enjoy Japanese weapons. Brings out the weeaboo in me.

Gist: If it's funny yet awesome like Yoshimitsu, I'll play them. I enjoy being more of a defensive troll-happy mind game type. I'll go on offense when necessary though. Sometimes, I end up playing a female main over a male and could care less on playstyles. Kokoro from DOA series being a prime example. Despite my manliness cries for playing with a pussy, I believe looking at males sometimes makes me uneasy. For instance, look at Algol, ZWEI, and Voldo. *shudders* It's best to have a female to back up the manliness. Kind of why I need a female main beside a male to keep me in check. Besides, I sort of explore what females wear more than the males. It's fabulous! *snaps fingers* xD

No it's weeaboo haha. Means a person who tries to speak Japanese and do stuff but fails. Americans that mispronounce and misinterpret stuff. Basically anime watchers.

Oh I know what one is (but thank you for the explanation regardless :D). My friend calls them "weabs" for short. Sorry about the spelling though :P

Aesthetics?
Yes. The visuals draw me in first. But with CaS this has become less so, but the character's style itself still follows. I like pulling off cool things, so I have a tendency to play characters that are flashier than they are effective.
Execution difficulty?
This helps. I don't have the kind of dexterity to make a pretzel out of my controller.
Tournament tier rankings?
I don't even pay attention to that.
Back-story?
ALL OF MY YES PLEASE, this is my main draw for fighting games. They always seem to have some of the coolest damn characters around and I like learning the lore and fluff of the gameverse. I can attribute my interest in SC, Guilty Gear, and Skullgirls to this, I saw some characters and was like "wow they look cool, I wonder what their stories are?" as opposed to like..... actually playing the game.
Unique moves?
I don't know how to answer this, uh.....
Weapon type?
I like polearms. Hilde in particular, because she's so damn classy and her SHOULDER OF JUSTICE is all kinds of ridiculous. I also like her moveset being relatively small and charge-based, which helped to break me out of my button masher habit. I like Kilik's pole style as well, because its elegant but in a masculine way. Hilde and Kilik are also the most attractive characters of the gals and guys, in my opinion....

Aesthetics
This actually plays a pretty big role for me when I choose characters. I tend to avoid characters that seem too off the wall *stares at Voldo* I actually prefer to play cute adorable characters and male characters. Talim, Cassandra, and Yunseong were my previous mains, now I'm maining Viola and Xiba (yes I consider Viola adorable)

Excecution Difficulty:
It's not one of my major concerns. If a like a character enough, I'll try my best to get good with the character.

Tournment tier Rankings:
...

Back Story:
Knowing about a characters back story makes using that character twice as enjoyable. My favorite feature was reading the character profiles in the previous installments. Still wish they didn't take that out.

Weapon Type:
Usually I don't pay that much attention to weapon types though I'll admit, I was drawn to Viola because of her little orb of doom out of curiosity. I thought to myself "an orb can't be THAT useful in a fight" boy was I wrong...

Unique Moves:
Eh it's whatevs.

Other factors sorta contributed my choices too. When I started playing SC5, I absolutely hated Xiba. I couldn't stand him. Never thought I would touch him. Then one day, a friend of mine who got tired of me using Viola made a game for me. We play one match against each other. The winner of the match get's to pick between either Xiba or Astaroth. Whoever we get we have to stick with that character for a week and I knew damn well I wasn't going to get stuck with Astaroth. So we played, I won and realized that Xiba wasn't really that bad. He grew on me a bit. Now I love him (granted I'm still not that good at using him but I enjoy him)

Aesthetics?
When it comes to games that don't have character creation, it does matter to me to a certain degree. In Soul Calibur, before CAS came out, I was hooked with Taki, Ivy, Yun-Seong, & Kilik in the earlier games. I loved their appearance it's kind of what drew me in. So yeah, aesthetics do play a part in it for me.

I think one of the best examples where aesthetics totally won me over was in King of Fighters 2006's Ninon Beart. I love Gothic characters and she is definitely one of the best I've seen. And she is pretty fun to play as too. :)

Execution difficulty?
It varies. So far, Alpha Patroklos is the hardest character for me to use. I can't master his just attacks and it's a shame because I like the style. I just wish I could pull of more of his moves.

Tournament tier rankings?
Irrelavant to me. This is because I don't go to tournaments. I love fighting games and I can get a little competitive but not tournament level competitive. I play for fun and like Garjian said, I find my main way before tournaments happen anyway.

Unique Moves?
Not really. Most of the characters in Soul Calibur have awesome moves so nope. But for Tira, she'd be an exception because I'm drawn to the way she attacks and that's what preempted me to add her to my mains when she debuted in SCIII.

Weapon Type?
Nope not at all. But I will say I am heavily drawn to faster paced characters. So characters like Viola, Natsu, Taki, Cassandra, Amy, Yun-Seong, Kilik/Xiba to a lesser extent. But like I said, it's not always the case because I do enjoy using heavier characters like Siegfried, Patroklos, and Sophitia as well.

Aesthetics?
I tend to go for female characters
Execution difficulty?
Usually they are the easy to pick up but hard to master type.
Tournament tier rankings?
I don't worry about tiers because they end up being between C and B rank anyway.
Back-story?
I'm not too picky. Developers are good about making someone lovable personality-wise.
Unique moves?
I love flashy attacks, especially ones that incorporate forms of acrobatics or dancing
Weapon type?
Anything lightweight and speedy.

Well, Cervy is pretty cool, almost always powerful, doesn't really have a backstory, and uses my favorite weapons in the series.
