Is anyone good with computers?

I seem to have some sort of virus that won't let me open certian programs like my animating program, Sony Vegas, FireFox etc. I can't download programs that can prevent this virus because it won't let me.

I tried to restart the computer but it didn't work. I uninstalled FIrefox and reinstalled it again but it didn't work. I think this virus was called SirCam virus or something. Anyone know what to do?

A few questions to help prevent further infection:

How/when did you get infected?

What site where you on?

What browser where you using? I'm guessing Firefox. If so, what plugins do you have on it?

What Antivirus do you have installed?

Okay, after some research I don't think that's the culprit.

Did you open any suspicious email recently?

Is your comp networked to anything else?

Anyway, getting rid of it:

The Symantec tool is the place to start: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2001-072013-2927-99
Then scan the comp with AVG
Then get yourself a copy of Malwarebytes (currently has a free version): http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and scan with that.

If any of those don't run try booting the comp in safe mode (hold f8 during boot up) and try those again.

If all that doesn't work try using Combofix to nuke the virus from orbit.

The virus that you say you have is spread through email. It has to have gotten on your system somehow if it wasn't you it might have been someone else who used the computer or it may have been spread over network.

If you want i can give you an invite to this really good torrent site and they have some virus protection stuff on there...or i could make an AIM account and just file transfer this program called Avast security. Another good virus protection software is Nod32 but i am not completely sure if they have a 64bit version but it is one of the best.

In my general opinion, most Antivirus is more or less on par with their competitors (with the exception of Symantec and Norton, which are crud). I usually view them as last lines of defense. The first line of defense is safe browsing techniques, the second is adblock and flashblock.

After scanning my computer it seems like it wasn't SirCam virus since none of my files were infected. So... yeah, i'm tottaly clueless of what to do now. I'll try to look more into it

My fiancee had this exact same virus. I cleaned it out using Malwarebytes in Safe mode, no problem. The virus doesn't affect safe mode thankfully. She got it by browsing websites and got it from one that you never would have suspected, a website for wedding purses.

Probably from the ads. They are the bane of computer security these days. I highly recommend adblock and Flashblock.

HogisGuy, did you go through all the steps I listed? Combofix should take care of just about anything. Could you post up the text file it generated after being run?

YES THAT'S IT! I must've got it from that ad i accidentally clicked yesterday on thatguywiththeglasses.com

Edit: Yes i did go through everything but it didn't work. I tried to visit Combofix link but the site was plain empty. Again, thank you for your help

I'm really sorry if this is a dumb question but i'm not that good with computers but how does this safe mode work and how can i use it?

Heh, whatever you have it's blocking combofix's site.

Anyway, try these links:

infospyware.net
bleepingcomputer.com

Combofix is basically a registry cleaner, most tough viruses sit in the registry.

And once you manage to clean this thing off your comp put adblock and flashblock on your comp. That should eliminate about 90% of your virus vectors.

Safe mode disables some features of windows which allows you to work around some of the virus's functions. It's really stripped down functionality wise, but unless the bug is more or less fatal you should be able to do something in it.

As I said earlier and as was also said by others, safe mode is accessible via menu by holding f8 when booting the computer.

sounds to me like this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-soft

or something similar.

i've had this type of virus 3-4 times. reboot in safe mode, update parameters on your antivirus, i used malwarebytes every time for mine.

then run it in safe mode. if you can't, which is sometimes the problem, put the icon for your antivirus in an easy to find place on your desktop. the virus will load at startup but, like other programs, it takes a couple seconds to load and anything opened before that is fine. what you want to do is reboot and as soon as the desktop comes on click on your antivirus/antimalware program immediately in the first one or two seconds. this should get rid of it for ya.

after that get rid of your antivirus program and get MSE and avast! so you never have to worry about that crap again.
