Le Bello's Challenging Create-A-Soul Challenge Contest!

Wow, the entries go all the way back to page 11... I didn't realize there were so many until now, this may be more difficult than I realized.

I'm thinking I may have to vote for _________...
maybe...
maybe...
maybe...
probably...
maybe...
Perhaps I need to look at them all again.

UMMMMM... For me it's down to like 5...

-Of course Fliptop's Scottish guy- Yeah... Fliptop never ceases to impress... tartan cape, movset choice...

-Matty82's Antoinette inspired French monarch- I love what was done with the hair, the dress made with Adept's Sleeves and the puffy shirt, and the blood around the neck!

-Gatsu's toreador-(Which is good 'cause his centarion had the exact same fraking name as my legionary o_0) Pulled off using Cervy's coat AND the Warrior's Shoulder? Bravo.

-Leona's hungarian gypsy- Just attracted me for some reason. All of those parts just work well together.

-And Samaras_Madness' Russian representative- Comes off totally emnating "RUSSIA" without tying to communism (no offense to those who did)

UUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHMMMMM... Gatsu, there I said it.

My vote goes to ThePascuzzi.
I fear the poor guy wont get any votes and this depresses me because people tend to overlook the better things when it comes to anything.
A very basic and average entry and this is why I love it, because it's so basic yet still Very dynamic and Very well done!
Usually to make something good, people have to try and make it look beastly and insane, but this is such a great example of how to make basic into the best.

Okay, and here he is, Cu Chulainn! (my entry of course)
He represents Ireland. :)

The Character:
View attachment 18161View attachment 18162View attachment 18163View attachment 18164View attachment 18165View attachment 18166About the flag. It is meant to represent the Irish Flag as if he were carrying it out to battle, but unfortunately, that's as close as I could get. Anyway, it's meant to be the Irish Flag.

Reasons For Design:
There are quite a few things in this design can someone could call questionable, such as the many blood stains, the scars, the image of the dog on his back, and the odd mix between bad-ass knight, and peasant.
First off, I'd like to explain why he's "pretty"... even though some sketches of Cu Chulainn showed him as a gritty barbarian.. this would be incorrect, as if you have read any of his history, Cu Chulainn is what many people viewed as a "beautiful man", so much to the point that many people would ban their daughters and wives from talking to him purely out of fear that he would seduce them.

Next to explain is the picture of the dog's face on his cape.
Anyone who knows about Cu Chulainn knows about how All of this started... because of a dog, quite a giant dog actually.
As a little child, Cu Chulainn killed a massive guard dog in defense.
This was instantly the start of his long life as a valiant and brutal warrior.
Many readings in history and mythology show that killing this dog left a massive impact on his mind, and everywhere he went, he carried with him something that symbolized the dog.

Next are the scars and blood... which are very unfortunate in metaphorical use.
Almost every era of Cu Chulainn's life was rather sad.
He killed his son in law who was in disguise as an enemy, but once killed, Cu Chulainn saw who it was and felt instant pain.
He was forced by the Queen to fight his foster brother / best friend to the death.
Most of his family were brutally killed in front of his eyes.
He had strange encounters with otherworldly creatures (such as women that transformed into swans), each of which made him feel even more alone, or cursed.
On top of this, he normally killed hundreds among hundreds of men in wars.
All of these things of which would leave scars and heavy stains of blood on both a man's body, and spirit.

And finally, why his design is a mix between royal knight, and peasant.
Well, it is true that Cu Chulainn eventually became royalty, but simply said, deep inside he wasn't royalty.
He always felt haunted and troubled, and hated to mix himself with the pompous.

Representations:
Well, as a little kid, I was always absolutely attached to Cu Chulainn.
To me, he represents everything there is to being Irish.
I'm sure we've all heard that "Luck O' The Irish" crap, when really, there's no luck in it at all.
Ireland started out very low class, poor, and at the bottom of the food chain, then disease after disease and plague came by, and if that weren't enough, there's always been endless threats, wars, and brutal "incidents" caused by English Government and extremists.

Even to this day, there's been multiple times of the English walking around places like Belfast wearing masks and holding guns, parading that our country is not our country.
Even with a treaty signed, this happens.

Maybe I could have used a Leprechaun or some other kind of novelty crap to represent Ireland, but let's be honest... the entire history of Ireland to this day is as dark as always.
A happy commercialized mascot is not what really represents the country, but one of the biggest mythological icons, covered with blood and grief, I think that just about tells it how it is.

On the other hand, Ireland is an amazing place to live, and it's absolutely beautiful.
This would be another reason for his beauty, it shows the charm. :P

Anyway, onto the point.
All the things he represents.
Well I already got around to a lot of it... the grief, all the dark historical happenings, the beauty, etc.
But there's some other things included for this.
The valor and hard working F*** YEAH personality, the rebel that most Irish have inside.
Even his looks... well at this era, most warriors and knights looked like beefed out manly men, but then Cu Chulainn, he was as everyone sad, beautiful.
Now I am not saying everyone in Ireland is beautiful, but what I am saying is, he wasn't fitting in with any other guy at the time... he was doing his own thing, being himself, innovating.

So to me, this represents Ireland with all the pain we've gone through, yet at the same time, the beauty, the rebellion, the will to never back down, and of course, the ability to always be ourselves.
Rant Over.

(Edited the third spoiler, I forgot to add something in.)

Well, there you all go, I hope that wasn't too depressing or obsessive.
And of course, I hope you all don't mind the history lessons. xD

Reposting my entry so that anyone who didn't see it will see it.
I have a feeling many didn't.

My vote goes to ThePascuzzi.
I fear the poor guy wont get any votes and this depresses me because people tend to overlook the better things when it comes to anything...A very basic and average entry
Gee, umm...thanks, I think? Haha, I don't think I'm going to get very many votes, either, though. I don't really know how to highlight my details, like the better CaS makers do. Too many stars came out to shine tonight, so to speak, and if I win, I want it to be because I outshine the rest. However, like you said, there is something to be said for subtlety, because sometimes an elegant, sophisticated approach gets better results than an eye-catching, bombastic one.

Also, I just went over your post again. It's very clear how personal the subject of your entry is to you. I like that. It reminds me a lot of the history of my own heritage. Anyway, onto my vote...

As much as I think that the overwhelming majority of these entries deserves detailed reviews, there are just too many of them. So much effort went into all of these entries for them to go unrecognized just because "oh, well, I didn't vote for that one." Instead, what I'll do is list some honorable mentions first along with what I liked about them, then do the same for the entries that I saw worthy of a vote, then finally announce the recipient of my vote.

LordDraco3 - Comrade Astaroth: awesome stickerwork on hammer and sickle logo

Nullstate - Liberty (ineligible): faithful to original, coloring is awesome, so is hyperpatriotism. U-S-A U-S-A U-S-A U-S-A

Matty82 - Queen Elizabeth Tudor (retracted): classic Matty82 work

d_b - Henry of Woodstock: samurai armor works surprisingly well for knight theme

rdmunhoz - MacLachlann (retracted): very complete design

FreeMeal - turtle shells make great shoulder armor in the stills, right-arm gauntlet looks cool, good stickerwork on the helmet

Soul - Heroic Greek Warrior: Greek flag cape executed in interesting way

Gatsu - Lucius (retracted): looks authentic and complete, sea king's helmet is a good choice, centurion's plume oriented correctly, good use of were pants, shinobi tabi patterned to look like sandals

Gatsu - Kairos (retracted): authentic design with an edge

chobek - Napoleon: interesting attempt at hat and right-shoulder cord, sticker sash and badge looks great
VILARCANE - Ivy Spetsnaz: Leixia 2P works surprising well as stylized winter camo, gun looks awesome

Fliptop - Alastair: some very unexpected part choices, especially with the exposed midriff, but the detailing holds them all together nicely, as expected from Fliptop

Matty82 - Marie Antoinette: again, classic Matty82; the dress looks very royal and elegant, then you see the bloody gash going across her neck; visually appealing on multiple levels

rdmunhoz - Ballesteros: I liked the original and I like this one even more, though I tend to think "flamenco dancer" more than "bullfighter." The Chinese robe works surprisingly well for the subject's theme and the rolled-up muleta is a great idea.

MistaKoo - Osman: Perfect case of patterns transforming a plain, uncomplicated CaS into something with character. afro + stretched sphere is an interesting way to build a sultan's hat

yosharioIII - Lucius: Sea King's parts and Isis' Wrap work wonders for this Roman legionary CaS.

Mumol - Vellamo: The theme was very clearly illustrated with this CaS. There's no question she's a mythical figure associated with cold waters. colors are well chosen, Barbarian's skirt was an interesting choice

Gatsu - Miguel: use of Cervantes' 1P top, tights, and their patterning makes an excellent matador's suit; the red cloth is a nice addition; Fez + heart makes a great hat

Leona - Jolana: originality at the thematic level, very few people would think to enter a gypsy-themed CaS into a contest themed about European nations; patterning is well-chosen, it conserves the character's simple sense of style.
My top three are Leona's Jolana, yosharioIII's Lucius, and Gatsu's Miguel. My vote goes to yosharioIII's Lucius. It's clean, the part choices make a lot of sense, its character is clearly portrayed, and most importantly...it's eligible.

Excellent job to all my fellow entrants. This is the best contest I've seen since I started frequenting this forum.

Hmm.... Who do I vote for...? ~_~

*AHEM!!!* ...After an incredibly long time, here are my top 7 choices for this round's contest - as well as my own reasons and opinions on why I like them so much. So, without further ado:

1.) Idoll's version of Cu Chulainn. Why so? Because I like the overall representation of that character as well as the tragic, yet heroic story associated with this one (which IS informative, I might add, since I didn't know most of the Irish legends including him). Good use of the colors, too! :)

Idoll's work seems to be quite striking and bold in terms of presentation. I like that. Even if Idoll doesn't win, I see PLENTY of promising great work coming from this person sometime in the future....

2.) Fliptop's designs always seem to caught my eye one way or the other, and his Alastair from Scotland is no exception here. Many points to you for actually making use of the bow and quiver to accentuate this design's overall flair. He really looks like a masculine, deadly and grim-looking fellow, now that I've seen him properly.... Wow...! o.O

Fliptop surely works hard to create his CaS, and it definitely shows here. Unfortunately, there are indeed plenty of people that are better than him when it comes to making incredible works of art. Nevertheless, I noticed that he is improving his work slowly but surely, for he actually learns how to do it better than before through experience.

I will look forward to see where your work can go from here.

3.) Matty82's version of France's Marie Antoinette (or inspired by her, according to his words) really caught me by surprise when she first appeared. I mean, sure, it was an alternate entry that invalidated the first version, but there's no denying the fact that his artistic talent shows in the resulting masterpiece despite all that. Truly incredible, I must say! ^_^

While Matty82 claims that this work is submitted to this contest for sheer fun (which surprised me even more when I read his post, to be honest), I think that its' a strong contender to win it all due to the amount of artistical and classical influences involved in this one. However, since there are indeed plenty of talented people participating in this contest, he might be facing stiff competition....

...Perhaps that's probably the reason why Matty82 could make his works of art SO good: He is having a lot of fun when it comes to creating them. Hmm.... I guess I have a lot to learn, huh...? ~_~

4.) MistaKoo's Osman of the Ottoman Empire looks incredibly good! I would really award him a LOT of points in terms of sheer improvisation alone! The fact that the very same improvisation only improved the overall design of that Turk - in addition to the excellent use of patterns, too!

In case the rest of you folks haven't noticed yet, I was talking about the improvised Sultan Hat, of course. ;)

All in all, it was really a great design, MistaKoo. Not bad at all!

5.) Samaras_Madness created a masterpiece by the name of Anastasia of Russia. What makes it so is that the mix of colors in that character somehow pleases me so much - so much, in fact, that I'm actually inspired by it! Not to mention that she also looks beautifully done when it comes to her overall design, too. ^^

I'm truly humbled, Samaras_Madness.... Nothing else needs to be said.

6.) Gatsu has really delivered his share of masterpieces from different parts of the world. However, Le_Bello himself had to personally tell him that only one may be submitted, and that me and the others had to tell him which one that he should send for the contest. And so, he chose the Spanish Toreador, Miguel.

I must admit that I'm incredibly impressed by Miguel's overall design. The degree of realism that most of his designs seem to have is much more prevalent here compared to the others, and that impressed me to no end. A real masterpiece! m(_ _)m

Nevertheless, there are many talented designs that might rival this one, so anything is possible at this point....

7.) Leona's entry is, by far, the biggest surprise of all because not only it was unexpected, but it was quite unnoticeable until I've seen it at the last moment. Her CaS skills used to create Jolana, the Hungarian Gypsy were quite amazing, judging from what I've seen so far. From the look of her face; to the choice of clothing used; to the correct skin tone; and even the choice of accessories make this one of the most simple, yet elegantly made designs that I've ever seen in my life!

...And did I forget to mention that the amount of colors, stickers and patterns that were used for this character were incredibly fitting, too? In fact, I'd even dare say that THIS is a true masterpiece! Magnificent...!

HONORABLE MENTION: LordDraco3's Comrade Astaroth is incredibly a riot! I really like it, man! xD

However, because his design looks a bit pale compared to the others above, yet more better than the rest, I guess this design will have to settle for this spot (which is still incredibly cool since it amused me to no end!).

...Now that I've enumerated my top 7 choices, here's what I have to say BEFORE I reveal my choice. And do take note that this is the THIRD time that I'll say this:

To be quite honest with you, there's absolutely TOO MANY talented people participating in this contest, submitting incredibly magnificent works of art from left and right for me to choose from! My brain feels like its literally floating in the middle of the great Pacific Ocean right now, taking a nice, long vacation in the sun.... Damn it...! T^T

Due to this, I also wish to congratulate every single participant in this round's contest, win or lose, for the sheer amount of inspiration that you're giving me and making it one of the most memorable experiences of my life, EVER! With all that said, here are my top 5 WINNERS for this contest, in terms of sheer overall quality ~

*) 1st Place: Jolana, the Hungarian Gypsy by Leona. I simply just CAN'T stop looking at her design at all! Hell, if I didn't have enough self-control, I might keep on gazing at her for hours! o_O

...And that alone, deserves my vote. Congratulations! m(_ _)m

*) 2nd Place: Miguel, the Spanish Toreador by Gatsu. This design would've won it all - if it weren't for Leona's surprise entry (which I really didn't anticipate at all, to be perfectly honest). If it were possible, I think both you and Leona should tie for first place. However, Le_Bello perfectly made clear in his rules which meant, "There can only be ONE winner."

Nevertheless, you managed to create a GREAT masterpiece and you should keep it in your collection, man. Well done! ^_^

*) 3rd Place: Matty82's version of Marie Antoinette. The sheer quality of this work of art cannot be underestimated at all, even if it does seem to fall short compared to the top two.... If Matty82 himself were serious and made a better design, he would've won this contest hands down! Instead, he decided on this design, which STILL earns him 3rd place from me....

In any case, it was a splendid work of art coming from you, but of course you already knew that! Thanks again also for giving me something to think about with that design, too! :)

*) 4th Place: Fliptop's Alastair of Scotland is already impressive, and I think I've already mentioned earlier about the reasons why I like this design so much. 'Nuff said!

Keep it up, man! :D

*) 5th Place: The last place belongs to Samaras_Madness' Anastasia of Russia. The reason? Because of the creator's great mix of colors (which gave me a TON of inspiration, mind you!) as well as the character's overall design. Too bad it gets overshadowed by the top 4, but I still this find design incredibly neat anyway. Cool! ^^

I'd also like to see more of that coloring style from your future CaS designs, Samaras_Madness. Please continue what you've started. I'm serious. :)

...And that wraps up my votes for today. Thank you all for reading and have a pleasant day! Later...! ^_^

I can't list great talent. But Lonewolf_Kai sums up the reviews I kinda want to say. However, I can't make a vote.

So here's what I'll do, I simply won't vote. But the one who can convince me right away, might get my vote. This is what happens when creative 8wayrunners like you all force Pocky Yoshi to crash and not vote...

Nobody loves John's CAS... :( *cries*

Well there's only one with an afro here :3

You see how Comrade breaks puny Yoshimitsu. Perhaps voting for him will give him feelings of mercy next time they meet.
