Looking for Main

Meshwave

[08] Mercenary
I want to main a character with strong options but still has clear weaknesses. Little to no extremely horrible or extremely good matchups, and can at least somewhat deal with characters that space you out.

Any help?

This question comes up a lot with new players. First off, welcome to 8wayrun.

You have to figure out a few things for yourself first. Which characters catch your eyes more than others? u gonna be a tourney player or a casual player. You want tier expectations or do we not care bout that.

Our best advice is to pick a character you like. Dont pay attention to tier lists and shit like that. Pick what you like and stick to it. Get comfortable with move sets. Learn the frames of the character. Learn whats safe and whats not. And for god sakes play offline!!

Before I owned the game I used to lurk around and read tier placement threads. It was common for list makers to say that they had a hard time placing Xianghua, Sophitia, and Cassandra. I ended up maining Soph, but not with that in mind. It was more of a coincidence. I picked up Cass as a secondary after playing Partisan online a million times. I don't know much about Xianghua, but sisters are very strong whiff and block punishers. Cassandra has a range and step killing problem and doesn't have strong lows (although I wouldn't say she has terrible lows), but she can force mix ups with frame traps. She also has crouch throws, amazing step, and all around great frames.

Sophitia is probably the best punisher on block in the game. TAS B does a lot of damage, is safe, is fast, and has reach and even becomes more damaging with reach. TAS B at tip range gives a stun on hit with a window large enough to get another TAS B in there. This is half life. It's probably greatest damage per impact-frame attack in this game. AS B is a lot easier to execute and 1 frame faster than TAS B. there's a long list of moves that become free damage on block from it. She has very good frames, but you need to be more creative with your setups than you would with Cass. She has 1K as a low poke which knocks down on CH, but besides 2K, she only has slow lows. 1A and 11A are half a second to impact. Her throws are ok, but she has the worst throw range in the game.

I've decided not to attempt talking about Xianghua, but watch a video with Mick. I know a lot of members will say play all the characters and see which one you like. That's pretty good advice, but personally, if I'm picking up a new game, I would like to know which plays the most like the character I'm accustomed to.

You can play almost anyone to suit your play style, but different characters have different strengths! Find someone you like and are willing to work with and then go to the soul arena for that character, like static said. i picked up Cass just because I <3 her then fit her to my play style. If it really doesn't work you can always switch :)

Also if you want to deal with characters who space you out Sophitia, Ivy, and Asaroth are all good choices at range.

Astaroth is your choice. Dude has everything your looking for and he doesnt have any terrible matchups i dont think.

Choosing a main huh?

SC4 is great because you can pretty much play a character any way you choose. Obviously there are some limits as you can only do as much as your character is capable of, but having played a number of opponents on and offline and watching many match videos I can say I have seen many unique styles for each character. Each one can be played with a totally different style that in the end is based completely on the player. YOU make the character, you apply your strengths and weaknesses to them and figure out how to use/get around them with the tools they provide.

Pick a character you like and go from there. I like to think it's better to play a character who you like and enjoy playing rather than one people say is good. Sure tiers are an important factor in the game, but if you put in the work you can put up a fight in any situation.

Good luck finding your character, and welcome to 8WR! :)

He has pretty solid match ups. Some characters give him a hard time; it's just Astaroth does so well VS the high tier crew.

Aneudy is a new name to me, but holy shit, Woahhzz didn't not let him get anything. Is this a terrible match up for Asta or is it just Woahhzz and lack of match up experience on Aneudy's part? Aneudy seemed to handle himself alright in the other match I watched. He jumped Amy's 2B+K every time.

thats probaley asta worst matchup i think but he has options. i think Woahhzz was just that much better in that match. asta throws and bullrush can keep him in any fight.

I've never heard of Aneudy's name also. However, Astaroth vs Setsuka is like... 6:4, Setsuka's favor. She's like the only high tier that Astaroth has trouble with. Also, Woahhzz is a monster.

Also, Astaroth can have a hard time VS 'in your face' characters. Mitsurugi, Setsuka, Sophitia, Cassandra. And though he has an even 5:5 with Amy, Bullrush and throws go so far. He has a great space game, but it's hard to utilize that if you're playing a experienced Mitsu, setsuka, etc...

Aneudy is a long-time player from South Jersey. He doesn't really play SCIV much anymore since he and the AC Hookers crew seem to be more into other games like Tekken and SF. However, he is an extremely solid player that should never be underestimated. He won GVN Winter Brawl 2009 and had consistently good placings in Kogarasumaru tournaments when they were monthlies.

Ah! Thanks for clearing that up; I had a feeling he was a veteran of the sorts.

Play as every character and discover who you feels the best in your hands. Enjoy the way a certain character slices into an opponent? Then you got your answer! For me its Yun-seung, I enjoy his kicks, but he is a poor replacement for Hwang :P. I attempted to try Rock because everyone said he was bottom tier, but i got nowhere with him.

Astaroth is probably best like people say. He's very beginner friendly, but has a lot of depth once you are past the early levels of learning. He can answer zoning and has an answer for most scenarios as well as a lot of strong areas.

When starting a game I always suggest go with characters that are easy to pick up, and once you got things down, begin shopping for another new character. Like I started with Astaroth and then went to Ivy who's very very complex. I later picked up Rock as well because the transition from Asta was easy.

Like others have said before Astaroth and Mitsurugi are probably the most fitting from your description. However, I strongly suggest trying everyone and see who is the most fun to play for you.

I chose Astaroth as my main simply because of how he looked and the way he fights. Raping people with a giant axe and slamming them to the ground...I also really like the big tank-like characters in games.

Just go with whoever feels the most fun to play. Chances are you will do better with that person because of it..lol.

I would have to agree that picking a character depends more on personal preference than on tier listings. Go with a character that you can "feel" more than the others.

It's not until we get to a certain level of skill do we really understand who's good, who's not, and more importantly can explain why.

As long as you stay away from rock, you should be fine. There's not a doubt in my mind that rock is the worst in the game. Besides, astaroth is better in EVERYTHING.

Nightmare is a good beginner character, but many newcomers are put off by his relatively slow speed.
NM is not a beginner character by any stretch of the imagination. No way in hell is he a beginner character.

However once you master NM, his tier placing starts to jump and he becomes absolutely a monster. Hes high risk reward, one of the best distance closers and has great spacing tools which lead to massive whiff punish. His throw range is by far the furthest normal throw in the game and his side/back and A+G throws are all amazing (some of the best in the game).

However dont look pass the lower tier characters, they arent as low tier as you think. Even rock is fearsome if you know how to play him well. Tira, Taki, Ralph, NM and a couple of others (some even say Maxi) all seem to be climbing tiers in the recent months as people discover hidden aspects of their gameplans.
