Making the switch from Special to Standard Vs.

TrippalHealicks

[08] Mercenary
When I first started playing this game online (first day of release) I immediately jumped into the Special Vs. arena because I liked that I could make my own characters. I've actually been able to produce a character that not only looks good, but has the abilities I need / want, as well. I have hit level 80 in Special VS. now, with 67.7% win percentage. I would like to use the regular Xianghua and not have to worry about "Auto Unblockable A" Nightmare spam monsters anymore.

So, i'm going to make the switch to "Standard Versus." Anything I should be prepared to deal with? Any major differences besides the fact I won't be able to "venom fang turtle" especially annoying Kilik spammers? haha

It's going to be like learning the game from scratch.

Exactly how steep your learning curve will be will depend on what skills you enhanced.

If you buffed your health bar, then you're gonna be surprised by how fast it goes.

I kind of play a defensive drain game in special vs. Auto Impact A, Venom Fang A, Start Dash A. Get some early hard hits in, when they start to turtle up, back out and let 'em drain from the venom.

Yeah... prepare to start playing a completely different game.

Like Chip said, you'll basically be learning the game from scratch.

You turtled with X?

Blasphemy.

I stand by my: prepare for the realness.

Well, not turtle....more of "back up and let them come at me with garbage, so I can :4::4::B: them." lol

But, I have played some standard vs., and up until recently, my win % there was actually a good bit higher than special vs. It doesn't seem so different to me, just can't take as long to "feel out" your opponent, with no HP buffs.

Well if you're playing online still, it honestly won't be as different as people say, the caliber of player left playing online simply isn't very good. You'll just have to learn to counter a lot of moves that you had Special VS answers to before, you'll now have to beat them with proper defensive techniques like sidesteps, tech crouch/jump moves, and knowing when they leave you at an advantage or disadvantage.

Of course all of this is different online than it is offline, so your best bet would be to find people to play offline with.

To put it bluntly, chances are you will suck. You no longer kill in like 5 hits or have 2 health bars. You no longer auto GI or drain HP.

Basically prepare to actually have to use skill now instead of "I made awsomest character just like in ma kool rpgz"

Also what everyone else said.

hahahaahah
As much as this pronounced me a "newb", it was hilarious.

Anyway, results so far: 3 for 4. I played one guy about 35 levels above me. He beat me 3 rounds to 2. I played him again, I won 3 to 0. Then I played another guy many levels above me......He powered off his system just before It count my win. Sigh. I played a 4th guy and dominated his face, for the most part. 3 to 0 again.

It is definitely different. That first match I was like "this isn't so different"...then I realized I was sitting at 20% HP. lol

Now just wait till you play at an offline event. You'll be saying the exact same thing, it's definitely different. Everyone from online that I've convinced to show up to an offline event has said it's like two different games, much like the shift from special VS to Standard VS feels like two different games.

umm yea cause it is two different games? as with all online games.... COD4 def different at a tourney cause your hard wired... Gears of War same thing... Halo Same thing... Any fighting game same thing... Seriously why does anyone think online would be just as good or even close to a tournament scene when it never has been before... Online really makes me mad because well it just isnt right when some guy almost beats me that only knows 4 moves and there isnt much i can do about it but block because i dont trust GI//Stance Evades enough online to throw them out effectively.... Online totally different world from Offline specially tourneys but i think everyone pretty much knows that... and I play online and offline so when your saying the calibur of players playing online isnt that great i'd have to argue as i know many High calibur players that play online just about everyday... and yes we goto tournaments too... you just have to sort out the good players from the bad... I wouldnt go as far as saying everyone that plays online sucks KowTow but probably just arent making it half their life like most people in the tourney scene... Still fun though when you have no community online is def. a bonus to have around for once in the Soul Cal Scene.

i would never play special vs. that shit is fake. nonsense properties. welcome to standard. where shit is real, but not online, but more real.

I kicked some butt for the most part, but I got beaten really badly in my last match of the night by a character I've not played against much...

This guy was playing Lizaardman and he pretty much got me against a wall, did his stomach-crawling stance, and just raped my feet. I blocked low, but he just kept coming with 'em. That is gay.

I found a few people in standard actually play like douches more than the ones in special. I didn't think that was possible, but it definitely is. haha

Cheap bastard pissed me off. I had to call it a night after that fight.

Lizardman is particularly hard to fight online because his Crawl stance mixups are so brutal when paired with online latency. The best you can hope for is to successfully block one of his moves then hit him with 2K to knock him out of stance, and follow up with heavy pressure so he doesn't have time to go back into stance. You'll notice Maxi is just as dangerous online in much the same way.

Yeah, I love it when you get in a game that starts off saying "4" quality connection, and ends up "3" or lower. They always seem to pick Maxi.....and you know they're mashin'.....sigh

Thanks for the tip for Lizardman. I'll def. try that out.

I always have the same trouble when I fight Lizardman. Either I get a good dose of feet rape or get rolled off the stage which is so lame. And if there is lag, I am really screwed.

There's plenty of douchebags in standard match because they are only concerned with getting a win. SC4 is the first fighting game that I have played online on a consistent basis. Most fighting games I either play offline or against the CPU. I didn't think I would meet as many douches online as I do every night.

I thought online there would be more people like me that want to improve their fight game and fight the best people. Ha. I get at least 2 disconnects from people who can't take an ass whooping, then when I call them out they either can't speak English or have no idea what I am talking about. I get the people who are at a much higher level straight running from matches unless they fight cheesy or move spam. I had one guy last night with 1700+ wins and a 5 connection running. He must have been a win whore because what's the fun in fighting scrubs all day? It's not like you're going to get a prize or some shit. Or I get those who uses cheesy ass tactics because they have no skill.

But anyway, I still play it because Special Versus was just too damn easy for me. I just have to keep on fighting until I can get some offline going.

Well, I just got beaten twice in a row by a mitsu ring-out thrower. He literally just ringed me out 3 times. Enjoy your 21 points, douche. I don't like this mode, already. People just do cheap shit, and that's annoying. I want to have fun, not be cheesed into a loss, repeatedly.

Then play Player Match

Ranked is full of douchebags. Sometimes you will come across some great players...but it's pretty fucking rare.

You learn alot from them though. It creates great spacial awareness.
