Nostalgia! Emulating older SC games & netplay discussion

We are SO CLOSE.

Me and Norik got SE running perfectly except that sometimes the game randomly freaks out and disconnects both players. Kinda like SC5... Hm.

Soul Calibur 1 is totally unplayable in the emulator we're using, but there are other emu's, and we're gonna try them. Probably the Dreamcast emulator is the next one to try.

I'm personally looking forward to playing SC2. I think the largest pool of players would be interested in that one.
I want in on some SC2 Online play.

Well, I just tried SC2 on PCSX2. It was playing at about half speed. While the announcer was hilarious, it wasn't very playable. I didn't really try to tweak the settings, and I know it's been done, so if anyone has some suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Norik, you said you had it playing on Dolphin. Was it at full speed? I guess I can try to ignore Link's stupid face if it means I can play my SC2's online.

Okay, here's an update on what I've been doing.

I spent this whole Saturday evening reading and finally figured out how to operate my own darn computer, and it turns out I have "switchable graphics." I thought I was stuck with a crappy integrated GPU, but I do have a dedicated graphics card, but only when the power cord is plugged in... whatever... In game, I'm gettting 40 to 45 fps, which sometimes drops momentarily to about 30 depending on the stage and whats going on in the background. That's in SC2, on the Dolphin emulator. I haven't tried PCSX2 again, since I had such bad luck earlier, but it might warrant a revisit. I'm afraid to try SC3. Afraid of world-shattering disappointment, because that's the one I really want to play.

Now, SC1 is a different story. I have it running on NullDC and on Mame, and it's so fast I can't even keep up with it. I'm sure there's a frame limit setting somewhere, but it's getting blown out of the water. I'm very happy about this. it means we can pretty much certainly play SC1 online, assuming we can get Kaillera hooked up. I'm in favor of going for the DC version, because as everyone knows it's 10 times the game the arcade version is. I'm pretty sure NullDC has a netplay option, or can be made to connect somehow. Need to read some tutorials.

Norik and I played Soul Edge over Mame with no problems, except for the thing flipping out and DC'ing every so often. Otherwise it was very playable. That was on Mame, but I bet the ePSXe version would be just as good.

Now this is all very nice, but it's pointless unless there's a community of players who want to be involved and play together. Otherwise, I may as well just dust off my DC/PSX/PS2 if I'm just gonna play the AI.

We're just a few steps away from possibly having online tournaments for one or more of these games. I'll try to get some tutorials up in the next few days about how to set up these emulators. I went into this clueless, but I've learned a ton. Anyone who's interested in playing online should start setting up their computers and get involved in the testing.

LOL.

I am SO HAPPY. I tried PCSX2 just for the heck of it and when I'm plugged in I'm getting

SIXTY FRAMES PER SECOND!

wOOT!

In speedhacks you just have to slide EE cyclerate up to 3, then turn on INTC spin detection, wait loop detection, and MTVU.

Now I just need people to try the netplay with. And I'm gonna get me an SC3 copy and try that next. Sadly it's 2 am now, so I'm going to bed. But i'm very very happy. :D

next time you're online you should walk me through what you did (but i can't promise i will play sc3 because that game made me quit fighting games for 6 months)

Is anyone still interested in this? I can be online at like 9:30 eastern tonight if anyone wants to try the netplay in SE through SC2.

Ermagerd this is so interesting. I may try soul edge, but as I haven't even played Soul Edge and Soul Calibur 1 (I'm such a loser omg) and SC2 with Dolphin (I had GC so i wanted nostalgias) has so much bad framerate on my laptop (Ironically my laptop generally runs faster than my desktop, probably because it has more free space and maybe a better processor? I dont really know), I'll have to practice on training for a few days T_T But what with soul edge running on a more easily played emulator I could give it a look. How is the netplay running on Soul Edge (I'd assume it'd be the best out of them)

The netplay on SE was great. The only thing was that it would bug out after 3 or 4 matches and the graphics would go all crazy and then it would disconnect. The matches we played though were great. I couldn't feel any lag at all. That was on Mame and we only tried once. We haven't tried SB on ePSXe, but I assume it would be as good or better. I need to download the emulator because I've been so caught up with trying to get SC2 running (and I finally succeeded).

I got bad framerates on Dolphin too, and I tried all kinds of variations in the configuration and graphics settings. It was playable depending on what angle you were looking at the characters. For example on the gate stage with the sunset and the burning seige towers or whatever in the background, it was about 50 fps (PAL) as long as you didn't get the sunset in the background, then it slowed down to like half speed. I should probably try to get a working NTSC version, because the one I have freezes at character select.

PCSX2 worked much better, given the right configuration settings.

Try to find out how fast your processor is and how much RAM you have and what your graphics card is. Maybe we can figure out where the slowdown is. (For me I think it's the graphics card).

Hm, my brother built the computer for his high school project (And his World of Warcraft days) with gaming in mind. I'm sure all I have to do is ask him about it and he knows all the stuff x_x
I will download that package for Soul Edge on mame in the discussion you guys started eventually.

Sounds awesome.
