Please define "Scrub"

...so I know how scrubby I really am. I've never competed for money or in a tourney. Is that enough for scrubness? I never spam moves, rage quit, send hate mail, nor strive for rank/points/percentage. Are those enough to disqualify me from scrubocity? I do need to shave, so am a bit "scruffy" but that is a different matter altogether. All opinions welcome, and let me get this answer out of the way so nobody feels the need to type it: "If you have to ask, then you're a scrub". Ok, that's done. Opinions on what defines a scrub please, if you will.

Thanks in advance

Bill

If you're playing fighting games because you enjoy them at a high level, then you should be using a viable character (Not a character just because they're top). If you're just playing for fun, then don't complain when you don't win... Damnit, I just realized I'm defending Sirlin on the internet, which is a big fucking waste of time.

I once played a scrub who was actually quite good. That is, he knew the rules of the game well, he knew the character matchups well, and he knew what to do in most situations. But his web of mental rules kept him from truly playing to win. He cried cheap as I beat him with “no skill moves” while he performed many difficult dragon punches. He cried cheap when I threw him five times in a row asking, “Is that all you know how to do? Throw?” I gave him the best advice he could ever hear. I told him, “Play to win, not to do ‘difficult moves.’” This was a big moment in that scrub’s life. He could either ignore his losses and continue living in his mental prison or analyze why he lost, shed his rules, and reach the next level of play.

Speaking in SC terms, I you suck so much that you can't break, let's say for example, an A+G throw five times in a row, it's time for you to get your ass back in training mode and practice grapple breaking.

Also, I never knew a scrub was defined as a player who follows his own set of rules... I thought that scrub was the same thing as a noob, just worded differently. Thanks for the read, Dullyanna.

I thought a scrub was a guy who thinks he's fly. Also known as a "busta." Always talkin' about what he wants, but just sits on his broke ass.

At least that's what Left Eye told me... amirite?

I always thought of myself as top tier scrub. I can compete against spammers. I know character matchups, strengths and weaknesses, and strats.

If there was some sort of Moderate->Advanced->Pro separation in the tournament scene I would be tops in the moderates for sure. One problem I have is that when I get shut down my mind shuts off. I stop thinking. Thats why I always lose first round,(first round jitters) and do great in losers until the Advanced players catch up to me again.

So to me, a scrub is a guy who is beaten on the mental level. They might have the skills even. But the mind is weak.

Take anything Sirlin says with a grain of salt, even the stuff that's mostly true. He's a MASSIVE douchebag lol. I get tired of the whole tone he takes with everything, it's all "You are all garbage players, read my book and you'll be cool like me, professional gaming genius David Sirlin!"

But yeah the general idea is that a scrub is someone who doesn't learn from experience, making excuses for why things happen instead. Blame the opponent, blame the game, blame the programmers, blame anyone but yourself. That's a scrub.

Actually, it was Chili that told you.

A scrub, to me, is either
A.) A noob twat who doesn't know that the blue 'X' on his controller means block, and the green 'triangle' is not always going to hit... all the time.
B.) A person who has skill, but once in the face of defeat reverts back to twat tactics (look above) or grabass. It's funny, but annoying as well.
C.)2kb, 1A mitsurugi's.

I'd say the Instigator hit it on the head. The term scrub isn't exclusionary, it just means the person has a poor mindset, and thus either creates rules or complains about things they don't like to deal with or do. This gets in the way of true self-improvement, which is kinda a big point in fighting games imho.
