Question about picture editing

How were some of you able to cut out pieces of pictures of your creations and combine them together to form one picture (like a collage)? Also, whenever I post a picture, I usually do it by uploading them directly to the site instead of linking them to other pictures sites (Picasa for example). Is this a good idea?
 
I do all my picture editing in mspaint. It's free and I don't need to use anything extra. Cropping everything takes time, but, again, free.

I don't think there's anything wrong with uploading to a picture host. I use imgur. However, imgur kind of had some trouble a while back and as a result, a good portion of my pictures were unavailable. That probably won't be a problem if you upload your pics directly to this site, but I don't know if you can embed your pics directly into your post if you do that. They usually just show up under peoples' posts as attachments.
 
The images straight off the PS3 are huge, I started cropping stuff and converting it to a jpg at first just because I didn't want to have loading issues... didn't want spoiler tags, and one thing led to another ...
I have been playing around with Photoshop Elements ..... but there are a lot of free programs that will do the trick too.
I haven't been using any really advanced techniques or features .... basic stuff like the eraser and layering... some text..... You might check out Tucows .... (they have a lot of freeware) and before I had this version of Photoshop I used some software I got there to do about the same thing. (.... that was a long time ago though so I don't know what to suggest now.)

There are a couple of reasons I started putting images off site...

-I already had a blog (for other reasons and interests) so I felt comfortable using it.
-Where I work they block sites that use the word game... too many people played solitaire ....So this site was blocked.
-I had a lot of images ... and I was having difficulty structuring it all here...
- Sometimes I like looking at my WIP and thinking about where I want to go next. I wouldn't necessarily want to post that here.

Yeah, it's as simple as just cropping and pasting them together in MS Paint. Bim-bam-boom you've got several shots of your creation all in a single image :P
