I need a situation to use this pic

So the other day before driving to my parents house for thanksgiving I filled up the oil in my car. When I returned home I notice something laying in the middle of my garage. It was the oil cap. O_O I had forgotten to put the oil cap back on after filling the oil. The drive to my parents is an hour in each direction so thats a two hour drive with the oil cap off. I open up the hood and the entire engine and inside of my hood are covered in motor oil. Friggin great.

I've wiped off what I can but every time I pop the hood I seem to find more. Any of you car guys know a way to clean it up a little more quickly? I don't think taking it outside and hosing down the engine will do me much good.

Absolutly do NOT take it to the car wash and do that. You will destroy fragile electrical parts that could be a nightmare to fix.

You can go to any auto parts store and get this stuff called "Gunk engine degreaser". Its in an aresol can. Its a kind of foamy agent the will help get it clean. Just do exactly as the intructions say and it will be fine.

Basically you warm up the engine, spray this stuff on (being careful not to spray it on fragile electrical stuff) get a hose and rinse it off.

You wont get every bit of it and your gonna want to wipe up as much as you can. The rest will eventually burn off. You will notice it smelling funky for a few weeks.

What you really need to pay attention to is the engine. Listen for knocking noises and other abnormal sounds coming from the motor. You drove it along way with it low on oil and couldve potentially damaged the engine. The fact that it still starts and runs is a good sign. Dont dwell on ot to much but pay close attention in the next few weeks.

Other than that you just have a mess to clean. Ive done it. And it wont be the last.

What kind of car is it?

Yeah just focus on the exhaust manifold, valve cover, and intake manifold. But dont be sprayin water near the distributor cap in fact cover that up with a grocery bag and a rubber band.

Your civic has a baffle inside the valve cover where you pit oil in. The baffle is a plate that normally runs your PCV system but also blocks most of your oil from escaping out the oil spout. Just make sure to put the oil back in that you lost and be prepaired for a little smoking and a little stink in the air. Its just the oil burning off.

Yeah I don't know what any of those things are. I guess just wipe like crazy whenever I see oil and hope it doesn't go kablewey on me?

The distributor cap:

You have 4 plug wires that are going into the Valve cover (the valve cover is the big rectangle shaped plate the has the oil filler cap) Follow those back and they end at a black plastic box. Thats the distributor cap. Wrap that in a grocery bag. You really dont want to get the black box wet.
