Soul Calibur VI's stage (Snow-Capped Mountains) might just be the worst looking SC stage

Disclaimer: Yes, I realize this is in-development, and things might improve. But I'm not holding my breath for a big overhaul when they're 70% done with development, besides it's one of the first stages to be revealed, so it's likely one of the most "finished" ones they have.

With that out of the way...

Dear god, have you guys looked at it? There is literally nothing happening there. Nothing. Just some blurry mountain backdrop. It's so dull artistically. Even technically it's really bad. The snow doesn't interact with the fighters' feet (something other games already accomplished generations ago), the cheap looking grass sprouting here and there looks terrible, same-y looking trees everywhere in the background... It all looks amateurish, I expect to see this in Fighting Layer EX, not a next-gen Soul Calibur.

What happened here? Is this a sign of what's to come with the other stages? The Sophitia stage looks OK though, but it's a notch below what we've seen in SCIV and SCV artistically... You'd think the new generation will allow their creativity to be better expressed...

It looks fine. The only thing they need to work on is the grass.

Boy am I tired of hearing people rip on the stages and graphics. It's like nobody has played a Soul Calibur game in forever (which I know most of us haven't, to be fair)

These are just two from SCV. The game has a history of pretty ugly stages compared to say, Tekken.

It's also worth noting that the game has an aggressive DOF effect applied likely to help make the fighters contrast from the backgrounds. Older games haven't had that, and it makes the backgrounds look far worse in practice than they actually are.

I'd rather they axe the DOF entirely.

I noticed that too. I hope it's at least an option in the graphics settings. Personally, I don't mind it that much, but what's the point of putting all this effort into crafting assets and stages if you're just going to bokeh them into oblivion?

I too, can take unflattering snapshots of any stage to make a point.

Those stages you posted weren't amazing, but they had something interesting going for them, whether it's the skies in the first one or the architecture in the second.

But the snowy mountains in SCVI? It's just the epitome of meh. Nothing stands out. It's Plain.

The stage (and most SC stages in general) feel flat in a way. Some SCII and SCIII stages had a tiny bit of height variation, but the later ones don't. I think the SC6 snow stage is perfectly normal for SC. The background actually looks really good imo, the trees are really good and the lighting too, it does have a nice atmosphere. The only thing that is actually crap, as someone already said, is the grass. But I'm sure they can still sort the details out.

Also, I think sometimes we might want a more realistic and casual stage like this? And when we will, this will be great for that. And it has a nice feel, a nice atmosphere, thanks to the background and lighting. I think it's perfectly fine.

I assure you that if you looked at the stages in real time, you'd wish you had the screenshot version. You're just complaining for the sake of it. I'm not saying the stage looks amazing, but I just showed you two really bad looking stages - this looks way better.

I hope we don't too many barren stages. A snowy stage like that could use something like mountain sheep or rabbits running around it. Something in the background. I also think there should be more snow physics.

Personally I love both stages so far. But I do wish the Greek stage had more going on on the actual stage, even though everything around it is gorgeous. Like there's water ways along the floor of the stage but you can barely see it most of the time, maybe if they made it a bit deeper or more visible, or had it interact with the fighter's feet it would be pop a bit more.

What do you mean? Do you want to see a polar bear eat a fish or something?
You're so funny!

But yes, wild life would've at least been something going for it. Other stuff like Atmospheric fog would make it more interesting to look it. It's just bare-bones as it is. No matter how bad stages got in previous games, they never been this plain.

I personally like the simplicity of this stage, maybe it does need a little bit of interaction with some parts to make it more lively e.g. seeing some wildlife on the other side of the river, or even the icicles falling down when a player gets hit to a wall or the ground hard enough; but it does have good atmosphere so far. But that bgm tho... Excited to hear the rest of the music as this progresses :sc1sop1::sc2mit2:
