SoulCast Episode #4: MysticBill

  • Moderator
It's been a couple of weeks since our last episode, and we wanted to make sure we got some coverage for PowerUp, the most recent Evo event. So, we brought on MysticBill, who took home a respectable 3rd place and who we hope will represent the Midwest strongly when he goes out to Evo.

As usual, we discussed more than just this one event and touched on Bill's thoughts on how SCV is progressing as well as his thoughts on the recent MLG event. Bill is also going to be at Season's Beatings, so we asked him a little bit about his preparation for that event. And, per our wont, we bounce around a lot at the end, talking about pretty much anything we can think of.

Also, expect our next episode to be one of the 8 players at the MLG event that just past, so be on the lookout!

An interesting and stimulating subject was brought up about the nature of fighting games becoming more offensive and instinctual rather than defensive. Mortal kombat was also noted for having the same traits and it could also be said that KOF13 has this too. MK has gone back and forth a lot with zoning vs. rushdown . There are a lot of rushdown characters but there are a few great defensive characters. I'd say the majority of high level players are more rushdown minded, and the game does cater to that, but proper poke spacing is of course crucial. At the MLG invitational the 2nd place winner busted out a very rarely seen defensive character and did very well. The game is also very matchup heavy, and has too many bugs for me to continue playing it a lot. When it comes to SC5, at a tournament level, being pretty offensive is a lot of what's on people's minds, but having a great defense can do soooo much for you. In the end, more offense creates the need for more defense, which the game has provided great tools for. I can see this game evolving well, as long as nothing terrible gets discovered haha.

Good thoughts. I brought it up mostly for as something to think about since it's not something we can really do anything about, lol. But, I thought it was interesting.

Also, I just realized we made a slip a little bit when we referenced one of the players at PU: PerfectLegend actually wasn't there; we meant DerrickLegend.

That Japanese tournament had 82 players, not 20. Out of those, 3 people used Siegfried. Mitsurugi had the most with 9 players using him. But in general, I think people are either underestimating certain characters because of their under-representation. Plus you have to take into account the latest changes that were done to the game. After EVO, we'll have a better idea of what this game looks like and about who's good/who sucks.

Yeah, that's pretty much the basis for not doing the character-specific episodes until after Evo. Everyone's gonna be laying all their tech out that for that event.
