Standard Controller Vs Arcade Stick - What's Your Take On This Matter?

How do you see this? Some people refuse to play with DS3 and/or X360's pad but others say that they don't really see arcade stick to be superior. Personally, I'd love to play with an arcade stick but I can't afford one right now so I'm stuck with a DS3.

There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument. I came from the 80's playing n arcades but started playing sc1 on a controller. Did that up untill bout 6 months ago and got an arcade stick. The memories came flooding back.

Now there are some things on the stick that are easier (for me at least) to pull off than on the controller and Vice versa. Kilik's GB asura, shaking stuns, various Maxi combos that I could never get off quite right. HOWEVER on a controller I can break throws easier, and I still am 50/50 with the comfort of a controller vs a stick.

So sticks make some things easier and some things harder. Vice versa on the controller. If you plan to just be a casual gamer then I would stick with the controller and save ur money. But its a free world, you can do what you want!

I will never be TEH GREATEST but it's not like I'm a casual gamer, to be frank with you. I didn't play much for the last few years due to university duties but back in the day I was quite the gamer. I was even a part of the local community of Tekken and Soul Calibur hardcore players. Good days... ^_^

Anyway, thanks for your input. I agree with what you've said.

It's a tough call. GENERALLY stick is better for most, but it's not an everybody thing. With SC you are not doing too many complicated directional motions so a dpad can take you pretty far (unless it's the xbox one that is inaccurate as fuck). I prefer a stick because you have ease to buttons. Accessing any combination is far easier IMO. Complicated motions are easier on a stick and iJFs are much easier since you can do plinking motions. However one advantage the pad has is the ability to hold the shoulders for charging with Hilde. This is a pain on your hand to emulate this on stick but it can be done.

Sticks have a learning curve tho. Give them time before you make your decision. Most people stick with them tho. Avoid bat tops and concave american ones like the plague tho. They are TERRIBLE for fighters. This basically means don't buy that garbage MK one coming out.

If you want top quality get a MadCatz TE. Budget options are Madcats SE (modded with Sanwa parts), Hori Pro. You can buy cheap ones, but you'll find you'll want something better down the road. Their are some amazing deals. I literally got a Madcats SE for $14 thru Walmart. They had a deal that bundled it with Vanilla SF4 for $30. Simply pick up the stick and leave the game so it auto refunds for $16. Check if it's still there! ONLINE ONLY!

If you can get a friend to go halfsies there are buy one get 1 free TE deals right now. I bought one so it cost me $75 for a $150 arcade stick. The TE's need no modding, but have plenty of potential. Mines in the process of getting dual modded

Getting an arcade stick in Poland is not easy. Yes, this is the XXI century so I can buy stuff online but the catch is the shipping. Shipping to Poland is often more expensive than the stuff you want to buy. Thanks for the info, though. That sure is a pro post.

BTW - is the stick that Horihttp://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_videogames?_encoding=UTF8&node=468642&field-brandtextbin=Hori made especially for SC IV any good (I mean this one: http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-Soul-Calibur-Arcade-Stick-3/dp/B0018OCJ60)?

Thank you for the imput, IvyFanboy.
I'll admit- I've been able to do complex combinations and whatnot on the controller D-pad with ease, because I've been playing fighters since I was 4 (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II and Killer Instinct). I've only seen an arcade stick whipped out when I was playing in a Street Fighter: 3rd Strike tournament. The man using it destroyed my little Makoto, and everyone else in the room. It seems the best fighters in any tournament I've been in whip out the sticks, and it made no sense to me. I never understood what made them superior.
I want to step up my game a notch; if getting an arcade stick is what I have to do, I'll do it.
In your opinion, what is the difference between the Madcats SE and the MadCatz TE (other than the price)?

Put it this way, with Kilik I GB asura 10% of my attempts. With a stick it's closer to 90%
Stick gives greater precision and at high level play, that makes all the difference.

I find that having Guilty Gear experience makes my Asura Dance work almost all of the time, but there are some moves that are just too complex for me to use in actual combat (Think Ivy, she has 2 of them). And since I'm currently a Setsukafanatic, I need as much precision as possible. I want an arcade stick XD

It varies between players as you can tell from the discussion, but if you're keen on sets, learning stick is a good idea. I know some excellent sets players who do use pad, but the stick will be helpful with things like B+K attack throw and 2143A:B
Asura annoys me, the GB version took me so much practice to learn and it's still ass on block :S.
As for Ivy, I assume you mean SS & CS? If so just half circle one way, full circle the other.

I'm up for something new, lol.
On a random note (referencing your signature)- My pal Kurt uses Siegfried, and it scares me :<

Hi, I'm not sure about stick or button quality. Always been told that Hori sucks.
But I like the SC4 Hori for PS3 for the following reasons:

1. Lightweight (If you are rough with the joystick, this is a huge minus. I practice the way of the gentle fist. lol)
2. Button Layout (Spreads out just nice for me )
3. Easier time with Practice mode

I reset position a lot and I record command a lot, so the ease of access to the R3 and Select Button (Them being on the Top Right) is a huge plus for me.

My B button just died on me though, so I'm looking for a new stick, the same one.

Hori Real Arcade Pros (HRAPs) can compete with the Mad Catz TE.
With both you can change out the buttons and they have Sanwa buttons and sticks.

Comin from the arcade I need a stick for a fightin game, if I don't have one then I don't play.

I play on both XBOX dpad and Mad Catz TE stick..

Kinda agree with HRD.. I break grabs better on stick and step a lot better. On controller my slide inputs are a lot easier.. iMCF is still tricky being as I haven't had my stick in like 2 months, getting repaired.

Just "P-link" "slides" on stick it's much better than sliding you thumb on pad. There' should be a reason the pad bests stick in that category.

The SC4 hori is ok for a starter stick. I dont like it personally. Too light and not wide enough. Parts feel ok, but they dont feel like my TE. the HRAP's are nice and that $300 beast Hori now makes is good (tho too big for my tastes).

also take into account how easy they are to mod. If something breaks can you fix it? Madcatz SE modded with snap in SANWA parts is the best budget friendly option for a good quality stick.

Do not feel a stick will instantly make you better. I find the spread between pad/stick players at high level sometimes is character dependent. I've noticed Cas, Sophie, Sets, and Hilde player like the pad a lot. The 236 slide is very easy for them to do quickly and repeatedly and Hilde benefits from the shoulders like a bitch (more like the bitch she is!).

Another option is the new custom "Hit Box". The name is misleading but what it is is a customized stick where instead of a joystick for movement you use buttons. The real bizarre twist is your "up" button is on the right side away from the "left", "down" "right". They suggest a learning curve for the odd placement, but the concept makes a LOT of sense if you can adapt to the lay out. Look it up on google. They may be selling them. I'm tempted to get one down the line. I will be trying them out if they appear at EVO.

I never felt that way. I just want to get the "arcade feeling". Since playing Soul Calibur Arcade, I just loved this feeling.

I'm very thankful for all of the input here - after I find a job and get the money for an arcade stick, this info will be extremely useful.

I'd think about it too, but if there is an arcade edition for SCV it will no doubt have a stick so I gotta stick w/my Hori's and Mad Catz.

Should be way easier to be consistant (with no input errors), hit the diags and do 360s, not to mention faster.
