Teaching a newcomer.

personally i would just let him do his own thing until he grasps the idea of movement and executing the moves.. if he is completely new to fighting games then he may have trouble doing stuff which is simple to us such as QCF, slide inputs, combo strings etc.

after he has got all that down id try and teach him basics of how the game works so i guess the key topics would be something like:

low/mid/high/vertical/horizontal
- how that works, how to avoid them, how to defend
defending/advantage/disadvantage - why to block, how to respond, importance of defense... can also tie in GI, gaurd breaks, CF etc.
movement - 8wr, stepping, doing 8wr moves quickly
a proper move set - why moves are good, their use (poking/spacing/mixup/punishment/speed etc etc) and also safety
combos/CH/NH - teach him basic combos for his char, concept of CH and NH
oki - options on wake, maybe include tech traps if he can handle all the information
ring control - spacing, closing the distance/keep out, range, wall/RO mechanics

i think the key to fighting games will all games is much sure he just has fun with it if has not haveing fun then i dont think he can be good
