I was in practice mode testing a couple of things and I decided to try one of Sophie's Tech Traps and suddenly I could escape it. Then I tried one I thought was escapable and I couldn't get out. I changed characters several times and noticed it was systematic; for each character either 22_88A, 236236AA was inescapable or 236236AA 1A was, but not both.

So what's the difference here? It seems to my untrained eye that some tech with slower accel but go longer distances (NM, maxi) and others tech with quicker accel, but go shorter distances (Sophie).

/edit/ I can catch Maxi types with 236236AA > 1A, but the timing is tight to make sure they dont tech. If timing is off the Sophie types will still get caught, but they have the option to stay on the ground at the last minute.
 
tech traps are extremely character specific in this game. you might want to look at the opponent character's foot position, as that can affect things like this, though there are other variables as well
