Their worst mistake was simplifying the characters just to attract noobs. SC isnt that hard to learn, you just have to know when to do certain things, practice and find a main.

You FOR SURE cannot call that a mistake. Lets all sit down for business class, shall we?

We as a big money making corperation.....Who are we going to market this to?
We should market it to tourney players!
No that sucks. Cause then Ill make only 2% of what I put into this game. Think guys think.......
We should cater to "n00bs" cause they will buy the game, and there is a SHIT TON more of them!
YES..YES thats it. We dumb the game down in order to MAKE A PROFIT on a game in hopes to make more games.

TL:DR

Why as a major video game maker would I NOT cater to the majority crowd. Im sorry but tourney players MIGHT equal about 1-2% of total sales. Out of the 1.3 million copies sold (if that is the REAL number of sold copies) I would guess about a couple thousand TOPS are tourney players.

You call that a mistake? I call that beautiful business

In my opinion if Tekken was marketed for tournament players it wouldn't have so many characters. Look at VF for example.
VF has horribly generic characters, so quanity isn't posssible all templates of stereotypes. It may be a good game engine-wise but it sacraficed actual memorable aspects.

I wouldnt think that tekken is made strictly for tourney players. That would just be dumb on Namco's part. To succeed in busniess you have to cater to the market thats gonna make you the most money. In this case its game sales. Why make a game for tourney players when I can make a shit ton more money if I pander to the casuals?

Its economics 101

hardly anything in Tekken is made for single player or offline play unlike SC that actually make a difference in both modes.

If Tekken has too many characters that are similar to each other for that. It's made almost purely for casuals. You get like 3-4 characters with similar movesets so you can pick your favorite moveset skin and favorite animations.

To market ANY product to a minority of your demographic, is just.....dumb. You wont be in business that long.

Look at how many sales they had for each game. Its gotta be in the millions somewhere. You cant possibly think that there are millions of tourney players out there.

With the exception of games like StarCraft, I dont think there is a single video game in the world that is made specially for tourney players. Even starcraft has to pander to the mass majority in some way.

Longer lists = More skill required = better players = better matches.
More stances = More options = More "warrior like" = more depth.

No.

More moves does not equal more skill, it just means that there are a lot more moves that are useless. Look at IV and the move set. You wouldn't see half a characters move-set at high level play because most of them were useless. Most games with smaller move sets have moves that actually matter and are used for a reason.

Example of a game with ridiculously long move-sets: Tekken.
You don't see the entire move-sets in matches since most of the moves are ass.

Tekken Force (T3&4), Volleyball (T3), Bowling (TTT1), Devils Within (T5), and Scenario Campaign (T6) say hello.

Customization is somewhat of a casual thing as well, but it gives those who love to play online/multiplayer their own personal twist for the appearance of the characters that they play as. Can't say much for tourney players though.

While what you say is true, they could have just made the "useless" moves more useful, instead of chopping them. Imagine SC where everyone had 120+ moves and every single one of them had a purpose, even if some of them were only used for wall/non-wall combos, and none of them served a dual purpose.

Yeah, I may be dreaming, but this is my idea of a perfect game.

Useless moves I find debatable, have any examples? I don't think there would be a move put onto a character that does abosolutely nothing.
I find NM's 22K to be pretty useless. If anyone out there has found a use for this move, I haven't seen it yet. Not saying there isn't, but I haven't seen it.

When people say useless it usually means that the move is similar to another move but is outclassed in every way. For example with Siegfried there is B6 and 4B. Both are i16, 4B does 18 damage, B6 does 16. 4B is -12 on block while B6 is -10. 4B is +4 on hit and B6 is 0 on hit. B6 has 4 times the range of 4B. 4B has a stun that combos into 3B for crap damage. B6 has way better tracking, 4B can randomly whiff.

So people use B6 because of the massive range for a poke, it being safer, and because of it's tracking.
